Audio compression technology allows large digital music files to be reduced up to 10 times in size without radically degrading their audio quality. MP3 or WMA are two of the compression formats that let you enjoy a world of digital music on your Philips player. Download MP3 or WMA songs from authorised music sites on the Internet or create your own MP3 or WMA music files by ripping your audio CDs and transferring them onto your player.

USB Direct for MP3/WMA music playback

With the USB Direct mode, you can simply select the music on a USB device and playback all your content. All you have to do is plug in your USB device to playback music or export content from the device.

Quality sound performance-- 2 x 10 W RMS total output power

RMS refers to Root Mean Square, which is a typical measurement of audio power, or rather, the electrical power transferred from an audio amplifier to a loudspeaker, which is measured in watts. The amount of electrical power delivered to the loudspeaker and its sensitivity determines the sound power that is generated. Essentially, amplifiers are limited by the electrical energy they can amplify and loudspeakers by the electrical energy they can convert into sound energy, without distorting the audio signal. The higher the wattage, the better the sound power emitted by the speaker.

This unit is unusable in day-to-day life. The main reason is its incredibly messed up firmware that is hardly updated and when it is,nothing really changes. Look at any user forums discussing this product and you'll see that the positive reviews here on Amazon are a joke. These are the main issues:

1) Incredibly slow software, welcome back in the times of Windows 95.

2) Listening to internet radios is a pain. The device is permanently buffering, it takes ages to start playing an internet radio station and once it successfully connects it won't last long as the stream is very unstable no matter how high-quality your internet connection is.

3) There is no possibility to search songs or artists on usb disk plugged into the device. Once you have 500+ albums on your disk, you'll have lots of fun listing through your list as there is no fast way how to get to a concrete song. You can only furiously push the button on your remote provided that you know where your song is located.

4) When listening to internet radio, there is no information about the artist and song that is played at the moment. How cool is that...

5) Turning ON the device, 99% times brings-up setup wizard, even if setup was done previously and working. This in effect means that you get the welcome screen thanking you for buying this hilarious product, you have to select your country, adjust time and set up your internet connection. All in all this takes something like 3 minutes at least.

6) Radio-clock sound level can not be set at a minimal value: wakes you up really very loud.

7) Clock can not use CD, USB, Web-Radio, DLNA files as sound input! So the only thing that can wake you up is the FM radio.

Their combination is deadly for anybody who expects user friendly, 21st century product that actually works. Do not even think about buying this product. I was contacting Philips support forum several times and it was quite useless, nothing really changed and nobody really cared.

You can check this down-to-earth video review as well. [...]

Excellent 5 May 2011
By Dan
An excellent wireless audio player, I no longer have CD's and all my music is stored on my wireless NAS drive which this thing connects to very easily. Internet radio is good but what suprised me was audio quality & tone. So, if you store all you music on a wirelss network drive and/or on a PC/Laptop with wireless capability then this is an excellent buy, forgot to mention that the twonkymedia player software allows you to manage the music on your PC and play via the system.

Great 2 July 2011
By G
I have found this to be a great unit. It is easy to set up, sounds good and looks great. I have had poblems in the past getting music systems to recoginise upnp on my Mac, this found it easily. Why bother with a unit that has a built in hdd, when you can just stream from your PC or Mac? A review here says you can't add an ipod, rubbish just use a dock with line out and voila! You can add an hdd via the usb in a caddy if you want. Really I have been quite impressed with this unit, sound is crisp and clear, even on radio where my past systems have struggled. Internet radio is a bonus, and likely to be the way forward in the future, with the current DAB muddle.

All in all a great little unit, with a variety of input and music options. I considered other units from Sony, Panasonic and Denon. In the end I bought this and am glad I did, and I saved quite a few pennies!
