Quality sound performance-- 2 x 10 W RMS total output power

RMS refers to Root Mean Square, which is a typical measurement of audio power, or rather, the electrical power transferred from an audio amplifier to a loudspeaker, which is measured in watts. The amount of electrical power delivered to the loudspeaker and its sensitivity determines the sound power that is generated. Essentially, amplifiers are limited by the electrical energy they can amplify and loudspeakers by the electrical energy they can convert into sound energy, without distorting the audio signal. The higher the wattage, the better the sound power emitted by the speaker.

It's all packed in one compact, slim and versatile design that fits with any living space. Plus, enjoy smart and intuitive ease of use with this system's touch screen control display.

Also, the system is B/G Wi-Fi certified which makes it compatible with any B/G Wi-Fi certified router on the market. I have Broadband. I have a NAS, computer & laptop and buy music online. I have a smartphone that is not an Apple product. I have an additional MP3 device, but that's not Apple either. But I still would like to listen to my music. I spent months looking for a product that was capable of playing FM radio, Internet Radio, CDs and music from my home network and MP3 devices all together. I didn't think such a thing would be hard to find, but it quickly seemed apparent that if my own devices didn't have a little 'i' in front of their name I was out of luck. However, then I found Philips Streamium - This thing does all I want and more!

Out of the Streamium range I eventually decided on the MCi298 because it did what I wanted and the price (on Amazon) was amazing. It looks fantastic, so well designed, with an easy to use touch screen or remote. I did have a few little issues connecting it to my network, but after that it's been plain sailing and so easy to use I have hardly needed to refer to the instructions. The sound it produces is great too, even on standard FM radio stations and on low volumes - it clear, crisp, with good base notes and active stereo.

Yes it does take a little time to buffer the internet radio, or find music files over the network, and I do worry that if Philips pull the plug on the range I will loose their services to listen to internet radio at least and the unit does not come with any guarantee that they will continue this service indefinately.

So I can now play my CD collection, MP3 collection via my computer, MP3 device, smartphone or USB stick, listen to FM or Internet Radio, even look at photos on the touch screen! And now that I have also discovered the MCi298 also has an alarm function I am looking to get a second unit for the bedroom!

I really can't fault this thing!

If this lived up to its spec it would be a 5-star product. The big plus point is the range of music sources - insert an old-fashioned CD, plug in a USB stick of MP3s, stream wirelessly from a media server, or connect your MP3 player; Radio from old-fashioned FM or the Internet.
Sound is pretty good for a device this size.

But the user interface is clunky - takes too long to get through the menus. Given this is an Internet-connected device why doesn't it go and look up the CD track names? When you finally reach the FM presets you can't select by number but have to scroll through (so why number them?). Internet radio is even worse - what is the difference between a preset and a favorite? And that brings us to the Philips support server, where you are supposed to be able to manage your favourites. This is absolutely awful, it simply does not work. I've tried different browsers and they certainly give different results but are equally unpredictable and useless. Absolutely do not buy this if you want to be a serious Internet radio user.

Overall I'm happy with it for what I use it for - FM radio, CDs, USB stick, occasionally streaming. I'm just hoping Philips sort out the Internet radio before the FM switch-off begins.

Philips MCi298/05 Wireless Micro HiFi SystemI bought this for my wife for Christmas. It appeared to have everything, FM, internet radio, CD drive and streaming from the PC. Setting up was not too bad though entering the WAP2 code took ages. Once set up it downloaded an upgrade for the software; this caused it to crash - twice. Eventually loaded the update using wired ethernet - not really what I expected to have to do for a Wi-fi device. Finding internet radio stations was fairly easy BUT they took up to a minute to buffer (with a four bar Wi-fi signal at 8Mb/s) and then proceeded to just drop out and re-buffer every couple of minutes, making for a useless listening experience. The FM radio required the aerial fully extending and still gave a very hissy reception, nothing like as good as the 15 year old Aiwa portable it was supposed to replace. We installed the Twonky media player onto our notebook computer and it was VERY slow at loading picures. For example Google Picassa loads all pictures in about 30 seconds, Twonky took close to 30 minutes!! It did stream them to the Streamium but soooo slowly. In desperation we tried the CD player which worked, but took over 10 seconds to load the first track and an equal amount of time to skip to another track. This might not sound a lot but the Aiwa could complete both tasks in less than a second despite its age. Finally, the website referred to in the instruction leaflet for arranging favourite stations etc no longer exists! In all a massively disappointing result for a Christmas present - we sent it back, it doesn't really deserve any stars.
