Dual-DVD changer for continuous movie enjoyment

1080i HDMI with high definition video upconversion

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a direct digital connection that can carry digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio. By eliminating the conversion to analogue signals it delivers perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI (Digital Video Interface).

Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality

Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Philips Moving Surround Sound for a superb sound experience

Powered by Dolby Virtual Speaker technology, Moving Surround Sound expands and enriches the audio and video experience by adding a 'visual' dimension. Listeners can now appreciate an immersive surround sound experience that they can also 'see' with the moving. Essentially, both the top speaker and the metal bullet speaker heads are motorised so they actually 'move' together to recreate a surround sound experience. The combination of the moving speakers create the 'sound beaming' effect towards the listener effectively widens the sound stage and the sides of the room.

Dolby Virtual Speaker for theatre audio experience

Dolby Virtual Speaker is a sophisticated audio virtualisation technology that produces rich and immersive surround sound from a two-speaker system. Highly advanced spatial algorithms faithfully replicate the sonic characteristics that occur in an ideal 5.1-channel environment. DVD playback is enhanced by expanding the 2-channel environment. When combined with Dolby Pro Logic II processing, any high quality stereo source is transformed into true-to-life, multi-channel surround sound. No need to purchase extra speakers, wires or speaker stands to appreciate room-filling sound.

Digital Sound Control for optimized music style settings

Digital Sound Control offers you a choice of pre-set Jazz, Rock, Pop and Classic controls you can use to optimise the frequency ranges for different musical styles. Each mode uses graphic equalizing technology to automatically adjust the sound balance and enhance the most important sound frequencies in your chosen music style. Ultimately, Digital Sound Control makes it easy for you get the most out of your music by precisely adjusting the sound balance to match the type of music you are playing.

Dolby Digital for ultimate movie experience

Because Dolby Digital, the world's leading digital multi-channel audio standards, make use of the way the human ear naturally processes sound, you experience superb quality surround sound audio with realistic spatial cues.

Total power 400W RMS with an active subwoofer

View photos and listen to music directly from USB devices

Simply plug in your USB device on the system and share your stored digital music and photos with your family and friends.

    **************************************************************************EDIT JULY 2009!!!******* In contrast to my original review, i have to say STAY AWAY from this home cinema system! It originally worked well, but after 6 months the screeching started with the extendable speakers.....after 10 months the loud unbearable periods of feedback started during dvd playback......and now, a little over a year after purchasing, it's packed in all together. Total rubbish!! ****************************************************************************************************************************************************

    March 2008 Review
    I have to admit i'm pretty useless when it comes to technology so you'll have to excuse me. The initial set up was really easy (although i'm not sure where the sub-woofer is supposed to be positioned), I also bought a HDMI upscaling cable. Now, it says in the instructions that when using one of these cables it could take a few minutes for the system to communicate with your TV, 20 minutes later i was beginning to panic but it did eventually work. I am using a HD samsung 40" flatscreen with mine and to be honest, i cant really tell much difference between the HDMI cable and regular scart lead, but its still a great picture. The sound from the speakers are great, really deep and absorbing, however when i have the tv volume on, there seems to be a slight delay between the dvd speakers and my TV so i get this weird feedback type sound, like i said, im not technologically minded so this could be easy to fix, but i cant see how. My extending speakers move without screeching and i dont have any background hiss like some others reported, but i did have the same problem with the stickers (I think they used superglue!!).

    all in all, the system is ok, decent picture and good sound.

    I've used this Philips 2.1 DVD Home Cinema for a couple of days now, and all I can say is that for this price, it's unbeatable quality. The double-DVD feature is a bit of a gimmick (how hard is it to get up off your backside and change the DVD?) but it's not like you are paying over the top for it. The number of features is truly staggering: upscaling, tuner, aux-in, HDMI... for under £150!

    I have had no problems with the mechanics of the surround sound speakers, they come out and retract normally. The sound is as good as can be without any speakers behind your head, but given my space limitations, and the fact I can't plug in rear wireless speakers to the mains, the 2.1 was the only option. The bass is decent, although won't blow you away.

    It all pales into insignificance beside the look on your guests faces as the surround speakers slide out, though! Great party trick, and a great small home cinema system.

    Good sound, good quality, nice unit. Only fault is that the left hand speaker screeches (getting better) when it comes out. Also, this one sticks occasionally until the unit is switched off and then on again. Personally, if I could switch off the pseudo surround sound I would! 5*s for sound and design, reduced to 4*s because of faults.

    The following might be interesting to some people!

    1.Press DVD "OPEN/CLOSE" key (RC (remote Control) or main unit) to open the DVD tray (note:if no disc on tray,then you have not to open it);
    2.Press RC "SYSTEM" key to enter DVD system setup menu;
    3.Press RC "direction "key to hightlight the forth item "PREFERENCE PAGE" (not entering the sub-item );
    4.Press RC numeric key sequentially 811502(entery code,no display on TV);
    5.Press RC "down direction" or "up direction" key to change REGION CODE,"0" is
    all code.
    6.Press RC "OK" key to confirm.
    7.Press RC "SYSTEM" key to exit DVD system setup menu.

    Very Disappointing

    Almost - but connection issue's mean it misses the mark
    The first thing that should be pointed out is that this is not a micro system. Its huge. You need a lot of space to 'hook' this system up. Which in my case was not an issue. Read more
