Manufacturer's Description

Digital Sound from DAB Stations with Unique style and wall mountable

Enjoy superb clarity with built-in DAB tuner with this Micro system. With MP3-CD playback, have the freedom to personalise your sound settings to your tastes. Coupled with wall mounting flexibility, this system will leave you in awe.

DAB and FM compatible
DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) digital radio is a new way of broadcasting radio, in addition to FM analogue transmission, via a network of terrestrial transmitters. It provides listeners with more choices and information delivered in clear, crackle-free sound quality. The technology allows the receiver to lock on to the strongest signal it can find. With DAB digital stations there are no frequencies to remember, and sets are tuned by station name, so there is no retuning on the move.

Digital Sound Control
Digital Sound Control offers you a choice of pre-set Jazz, Rock, Pop and Classical controls you can use to optimise the frequency ranges for different musical styles. Each mode uses graphic equalizing technology to automatically adjust the sound balance and enhance the most important sound frequencies in your chosen music style. Ultimately, Digital Sound Control makes it easy for you get the most out of your music by precisely adjusting the sound balance to match the type of music you are playing.

Dynamic Bass Boost
Dynamic Bass Boost maximises your music enjoyment by emphasising the bass content of the music throughout the range of volume settings - from low to high – at the touch of a button! Bottom-end bass frequencies usually get lost when the volume is set at a low level. To counteract this, Dynamic Bass Boost can be switched on to boost bass levels, so you can enjoy consistent sound even when you turn down the volume.

USB Direct for MP3/WMA music
Simply plug in your device to the USB port on your Philips Hi-Fi system. Your digital music will be played directly from the device. Now you can share your favourite moments with family and friends.

Wow! What a monumental pigs ear Philips made of this one! Got it as a present and it suited me perfectly. Looked ok, sounded more than ok considering the price range. DAB tuned in with no problem - didn't even have to run the horrible plastic t-bar ariel to get a reception. It worked scrunched up behind the unit. So far, so good until you use the primary function, the CD player.

In this day and age anyone who punts out a CD player that can't play continuous or segued tracks without stopping, thinking for two seconds then picking up where it left off should be shot! It was acceptable in the early days of the CD as a medium, but now? In 2008? Ruins any listening pleasure that you might get from a live or segued album etc.

To put the cherry on top the CD player also clips the front of tracks so that you don't get to hear the very beginning of a song. It's about a quarter beat, and disconcerting enough on a musical intro, but on a vocal intro it effectively means you lose the first word. Try Elton John's Sweet Painted Lady on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. "I'm back on dry land once again" or according to Philips "(BLANK)back on dry land once again".

Oh, it went back to the seller of course after Philips advised me that that's how it's manufactured and didn't seem to give a monkey's uncle about it. It's practically not fit for purpose in my opinion.

End of purposeful rant - don't touch it with a barge pole if you have a single musical bone in your body!

This unit is great in almost all respects - it's compact, well featured, provides good sound quality, attractive and great value for money. The truely unbelievable thing about it is that the DAB antenna is just a two meter long wire "T" shape that's integrated into the unit. There is no co-axial socket to plug in a better aerial and the wire can't be replaced. That means you can only place this unit were this silly little aerial can pick up a signal, which you can guarntee is not where you want to put it.

This is a nice system, apart from one very bad 'undocumented feature'. If you play a CD where there are no gaps between tracks (e.g. a piece of classical music such as Strauss's Ein Heldenleben), the CD player pauses at each track number change and 'blanks' the sound for two or three seconds. I tried a number of CDs with continuous music on them and they all behaved the same. On any of the other CD players that I have access to the music played seamlessly, as indeed it should. I spoke to Philips about the problem and they said it was the way the CD player worked, that they had had lots of complaints about it (I bet!) and that they will be doing something about it - but they gave no timescale. Unless and until they fix this issue I would not recommend this system at all. I bought mine on a Sunday and took it back for a refund on Thursday. The retailer didn't bat an eyelid, which makes me suspect I wasn't the first disgruntled buyer of this item...
