4.0 out of 5 stars Electric rainbow 23 Oct 2012
By Tim
Colour Name:Black|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Having had a first generation Living Colors lamp for a number of years now, I was interested to see how Philips had developed the concept since then. The answer is not a lot. However, the original was delightful, and this model continues in that tradition.

This model is smaller and cheaper than the first generation version, but nearly as bright (I understand the current, second generation large lamp is 50% brighter though). The styling of this "Bloom" model is not as quirky, but it is more compact with a better stand (less likely to roll over if accidentally kicked).

You need to be aware that the light output is insufficient to light a room (e.g. to read by); it works best when used as a feature light in the corner of an otherwise fairly dim room, for instance lit by candles or a dimmed ceiling light. The range of available colours is amazing. The scrolling between different hues is fairly smooth, although I found the "yellows/oranges" passed by rather quickly. It would be nice to change the cycle rate in the automatic cycling mode, but I couldn't find any way to do this [UPDATE: this is possible - see user manual at link below].

I have deducted one star for the remote control, which is uglier and less intuitive than the original, and for the pictorial user manual, which is dreadful. The remote is now circular, compared with the elongate original, and does not therefore fit as comfortably in the hand. It has also replaced the iPod-style touch-sensitive scroll wheel with a physically rotating, ratcheted disc, which doubles as a brightness and colour-intensity controller when pressed at certain points.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty and Effective Mood Creator 6 Nov 2012
Colour Name:Black|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The concept of this Mood Lamp is very good, however in my opinion, it is very expensive, particularly at it's original selling price.

The lamp unit is solid and can be positioned anywhere really. It is plain and modern and would go in any setting. The remote control is well made but not particularly comfortable to hold as it is round. It takes two AA Batteries which are supplied.

This lamp is not one to provide the main or a substantial light, it is an extra and is best placed so that the light it produces is projected on to the plainest and lightest colour wall that you have, or I suppose it could be projected up to the ceiling. A good application would be for a child that was scared of, or disliked being in total darkness during the night. The light could be placed either in the room or just outside.

The instructions provided are absolutely abysmal! What Philips deem to provide, for this very expensive item, is just a sheet with diagrams on and it is useless.

I will try and help you with this.

Using the remote control, switch on the lamp by pressing the I which is on the inner circle. To switch off - press O

The ridged wheel is rotated to select the colour.

If you want to save a colour, for your first choice press and hold the button marked with one dot, then that colour is saved. To choose another favourite colour, select the required colour using the wheel and then press and hold the other button that is marked with 2 dots.

If you want the lamp to move through all the colours then rotate the ridged wheel round clockwise through 360 degrees and then press the inner circle at the I and this will then start off the rotating colour cycle.

3.0 out of 5 stars great idea 29 Mar 2013
Colour Name:White|Verified Purchase
excellent idea but I much prefer the earlier versions. The colour variation was not as as advertised and the colours not as bright. The control looks and feels cheaper, but is easier to use

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool piece of mood lighting 2 Sep 2013
Colour Name:White|Verified Purchase
This works perfect for what I needed. It's sitting on the floor in the corner of my living room and is casting a nice diffused glow onto the wall and ceiling. The remote control has two handy 'favourites' that you can setup (I have mine on the same colour but one is set to bright, the other to dim) and it's very easy to change the colour, hue and brightness with the control.

My only complaint is the manual that comes with it which is quite hard to fully understand but with some experimentation it all becomes clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this little mood lamp 25 Oct 2012
By I. Mcintosh VINE VOICE
Colour Name:Black|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I am so pleased with this Phillips Living Colors Mood Lamp. Its intensity of all the amazing colours is not only adjustable but also dimmable too, so you can find the perfect light and colour setting to compliment any room in your house.

They are small enough to be hidden nicely behind plants or small furniture and come with a really clever remote control allowing you so spin round between 16 million different shades of every colour you can think of. You can also brighten and dim with the remote, save your favorite colours and turn the lamp on and off. Plus the range of the remote control is excellent.

I especially love the 360 setting where you can choose your favourite mood colour then sit back and enjoy the colours slowly changing automatically throughout the evening making it the ideal lamp for a dinner party.

I will definitely be getting more of these cracking little mood lamps.

3.0 out of 5 stars does the job
well designed and works but the novelty wears off fast to be honest, not worth the 50 we stumped up but 25 to 30 would be more realistic.
