Firstly, I own this mp3 player, the Sanza Clip+, a Diamond Rio, A creative Zen and briefly an Ipod. In other words, I have sampled a great number of the Mp3 players available, and while this Philips Gogear is above average it is just not as good as the best which is, at the time of writing, Sandisk's Sansa Clip+.

    Plus points -

Battery life is over 20 hours from one charge which is brilliant.

Sound quality (with my Grado cans) is pretty good.

Its size is smaller than a matchbox's and almost as light.

Has a voice-recorder (but you'll need to be within 2 metres of the player for it to pick up the sound) and FM too.

    Bad points -

You have no choice but to use Windows Media Player 11, which sucks as I would far rather have dragged an dropped files and bypassed the W.M.P. Bulls... So, because songs are converted to some proprietary format from mp3, you can't just browse the folders on the device and simply swap songs in or out (like you could on all the first generation of mp3 players) unless they are converted first by the bloatware known as W.M.Player 11 (and no, it won't allow you to use earlier versions). This WMP insistence is a big drawback to me.

Battery, once it's used up, it's throw the player away time, as it's completely irreplaceable.

Songs cannot be separated, on playing them back, by genre (so if you're in the mood for only classical songs you'll have to put up with your rock tracks etc every few songs and manually fast forward)

Its shuffle mode is extremely primitive - I wouldn't count on the RNG in this thing even to shuffle a pack of cards - it's that poor at shuffling.

    No memory expandability!

Conclusion: I'm left undecided as to whether the bad points make it still worthwhile, when the Sansa unquestionably beats the Philips. Anyway, please do decide and judge for yourself whether you don't mind the minuses. Shame though, as it could have been nearly perfect with just a few changes.

I got this player for Xmas after my previous player (the very physically similar Creative Zen V-Micro) started to flag on the battery front. And I have to say it's a massive improvement on the Creative, even though that was a superb player in its own right. The first thing you notice is the weight - it's as light as a feather, and actually feels like there must be nothing inside the case. The second thing is the super-simple controls - no real need to consult the manual to work this device. The third (and most important) thing is the sound. Wow, for a unit this compact and lightweight, it really packs a punch. The stereo separation is fantastic, the EQ actually works and serves to demonstrate the tremendous bass capabilities of the unit, and the overall clarity is astonishing. With this player, I feel like I am actually listening to a top-quality CD rather than a fuzzy, compressed MP3 - and that's a real achievement.

Philips have done a great job with this unit and I would recommend it to everyone, especially those looking for great audio.

I managed to break a Creative Zen Mozaic 8Gb player, which was covered under an accidental damage policy, so got this as a replacement.

Well, this player looks nice in comparison, feels better to hold, and the buttons are much larger and easier to press. So it's easier to operate. The sound equaliser seems better, and the sound quality seems better when plugged into a decent amplifier with large speakers.

I like the fact that it has a seperate key lock switch and dedicated volume buttons. I also like the fact that you can still adjust the volume while the rest of the keys are locked. It was very annoying having to unlock the keys every time I wanted to make a slight volume adjustment on the Creative player, especially when I was busy cycling or running.

Despite these positive features, this player is actually a huge disappointment for the following reasons:

    - it's almost impossible to create a playlist. You can create one on the player itself, but to do this you have to create the playlist one track at a time. Imagine, then, how long it would take to add every song by a particular artist, or in a particular genre. Absolute waste of time trying.

There is no way of creating a playlist in the supplied software. If you try to make a playlist in Windows Media Player, it will not show up on the player. So if you like creating long playlists (i.e. more than a few tracks long) and you value your spare time, then don't buy this player.

    - You can only play music by artist or album, not genre. There is a 'folder view' option, but since most music libraries are organized by artist and album, this feature isn't particularly useful to most people. Very annoying if you like to play lots of tracks from various albums or artists, that fit a particular genre. If you value that, then don't buy this.

    - The only play modes are 'shuffle' and 'repeat'. I don't mind not having a 'repeat one track' mode, but it would be nice to have a 'shuffle repeat' mode so that the music doesn't just suddenly stop when all the tracks on the album you have selected have been played.

    - In folder view you can only play tracks from one folder at a time. You can't select multiple folders and add them all to the 'now playing' list.

    - The only way to play a lot of tracks from various albums is to copy them into one folder and then play that folder. However, this can be time consuming, and it means you can't keep your music properly organized on the player.

    - Although the it does feel quite nice, it feels much more fragile than my old player.

The Creative Zen Mozaic had a lot of annoying flaws, but it worked much better than this thing. I'm really hoping that some sort of accident happens, and it breaks. I look forward to getting a better replacement.
