I bought a Philips HQ8150 when I discovered that the cost of buying replacement heads for my old HQ7830 wasn't too different from buying an entirely new shaver. I think the cost of buying replacement heads was about £35, so, half the cost of a brand new shaver with brand new heads. Sounded like a good idea to me.

Philips sell a million different designs and models of rechargeable shavers, which can get very confusing when you're looking to buy a new one. Their product range is evidently not designed to be simple and user-friendly. Anyway, after months of research and analysis I deduced that the only benefits of the £140 models over the HQ8150 were the addition of some blinking lights, LCD displays, and bulky automated cleaning stations. The HQ8150 seemed to be pretty much the same in terms of the actual shaving heads.

So how is the HQ8150 to use? Well, I must admit, compared to my old HQ7830 the motor sounds a little under powered and seems like it's continually running out of charge. But maybe these newer shavers just use quieter or slower motors than the older models? Who knows. The HQ8150 seems to be optimised for getting rid of stubble as it does a worse job than the HQ7830 at getting rid of longer hairs. If you have a week's growth of beard, you can quite happily glide the HQ8150 over your face as it fails to cut the majority of hairs, which is weird, given the plethora of blades spinning around.

However, once the HQ8150 does engage with the hairs on your face, it does a great job. It enables you to get a glass smooth shave, and go over the same area again and again, without aggravating your skin and causing it to glow red. Cutting yourself is almost impossible, which is great news if you've had bad experiences with wet shaving.

It was 3 days before I went on holiday and my old Philishave finally died. (The on/off button broke). So after many years of good service I had to make a quick purchase decision and plucked for this one. Pleased I am.

The design is just an evolution of the old Quadra Philishave which you can still buy. Except for the non-rechargeable one, it is the bottom of the range shaver using the Speed XL blades. It looks slicker than my old shaver. The on/off button looks more solid and the shaver on the whole is quieter.

Unlike my old shaver this thing comes with a little docking station that you place it on for easy charging. However when you are on holiday and space is at a premium you can charge it by plugging it straight into the lead. As it happens I did not need to charge it over the 2 week holiday, using it every day. It also comes with a shaped padded case which helps protect it from knocks and bangs. It is easy to clean; you just run it under a hot tap.

I can't review the trimmer bit. I have never used it. The shave is good. I don't know how much difference the extra 50% shaving surface makes. What I do know is that it takes about the same amount of time to shave, but seems less likely to catch or nick the skin. It also copes better when you go without shaving for a few days and your stubble is turning into beard.

I would recommend this shaver to anyone that is in the market for one. I expect that just like my old shaver this will save me a fortune in disposable blades over its years of use.

Having tried all sorts of elecric razors over the years, to my mind, the Phillips floating head sytem seem to suit me best. So when my old razor, a phillips 600 finally packed up after years of service I was looking for a new one. Firstly I was surprised at the prices up to well over £150. Other electric appliances having come down in price. I chose this model as it was mid range and had all the features I wanted. I must say I have been pleased with my purchase as the razor does all it says on the box and comes with a quick charger and a travel case. I charge lasts me at least 10 days. It comes with a very clear booklet of instructions but the diagrams are difficult to see. Compared with my last razor it seems rather lightweight and I wouldn't think it would take dropping on to a hard floor. Wahing it under a tap to clean it is useful but one wonders how waterproof it is when one is told not to immerse it in water.
Anyhow in my view an excellent buy And I would recommend it.
