Philips Wake-up Light - Start Your Day Full of Energy With the Light That Wakes You Naturally

Now you can get rid of your noisy alarm and rise a new way: easily and energetically with simulated sunlight just the way nature intended, thanks to the new Wake-up Light from Philips. The light gradually brightens to emulate natural sunrise, positively affecting energy hormones to wake you more naturally than and with as much energy as on a sunny morning.

Up to 250 Lux Light Intensity for Both Natural Awakening and Easy Reading

Philips Wake-up Light HF3485 offers up to 250 Lux light intensity. Sensitivity to light differs a lot per person. In general, when using a higher light intensity a person needs less time to become fully awake. It has been clinically proven that you need up to 250 Lux to affect energy hormones in such a way that you wake up full of energy. The light intensity of the Wake-up Light can be set up to 250 Lux. This makes sure you can wake up to the light intensity that suits your personal preference best.

Light Positively Affects Energy Hormones

Research shows that light stimulates the senses, giving you more energy and helping you to feel less lethargic – that is why it is so much easier to rise during the summer months as opposed to the dark winter months. As the light falls on your eyes, a message is sent to your brain that positively affects the production of cortisol, the energy hormone. This means that at your required wake-up time your hormones are better balanced and you’ll feel more energetic right from the start of the day.

Choose your morning soundtrack: radio, your own music or a calming selection of sounds

The Philips Wake-up Light has a USB port, enabling you to upload your own music. It also comes with a built-in a digital FM receiver—wake up to the radio station of your choice. Additionally, the Wake-up Light comes with a selection of calm sounds to use as an alarm:

    1. Morning Birds in the Forest

At your set wake-up time, you will hear a bird singing. It starts out quietly and takes a minute and a half to reach the volume level you selected. The gradually increasing sound will make the wake-up process nice and gentle, ensuring you're never rudely awakened. When the sound reaches your selected volume level, getting out of bed is easy.

    2. Pleasant Friendly Beep

At your set wake-up time, you will hear a friendly beep. It also starts quietly and gradually reaches your selected volume level and make your wake up time easy and pleasant. The gradual increase in volume insures that your energy hormones do not suffer in the process of waking up.

    3. Sounds of the African jungle

Wake up to the natural sounds of the jungle: this soundtrack has been specially composed to give you a natural calmness. It also starts quietly and gradually reaches your selected volume level and make your wake up time easy and pleasant.

    4. Soft chimes in the wind

Wake up to the soothing sounds of ringing chimes, the gentle and peaceful ringing would be very comforting to wake up with.

    250 Lux Light Intensity

Sensitivity to light differs in everyone. In general, when using a higher light intensity a person needs less time to become fully awake. The light intensity of the Wake-up Light can be set up to 250 Lux. This makes sure you can wake up to the light intensity that suits your personal preference best. It makes use of a halogen bulb, and the lamp-shaped design suits every bedroom.

    Great Sound Quality

The speaker in this Wake-up Light is backed up by an integrated sound box, assuring great sound quality when listing to the FM radio or when waking up with the natural wake-up sounds.

    Sleep Timer

The sleep timer lets you decide how long you want to leave the light on for reading or to listen to the radio before you fall asleep.

    Dusk simulation

The Philips Wake-up Light HF3485 just not only wakes you up but it also helps putting you to sleep. The gradual decreasing light and sound sooth your mind, relax you and help you to drift to sleep. You can set your preferred time for the duration of the dusk simulation.

    Proven Health Benefits

Scientific studies have shown that light plays a crucial role in waking up naturally. The research indicates that more than half of us suffer from insufficient exposure of light in one way or another. The Wake-up Light was designed to counteract insufficient light exposure when waking up and the negative consequences that may have on your well-being.

Research shows that light stimulates the senses, giving you more energy and helping you to feel less lethargic – that’s why it is so much easier to rise during the summer months as opposed to the dark winter months. As the light falls on your eyes, a message is sent to your brain that positively affects the production of cortisol, the energy hormone. This means that at your required wake-up time your hormones are better balanced and you’ll feel more energetic right from the start of the day.

Let us open your eyes to a new way of waking up!

The Wake-up Light start producing light from 30 minutes before your set wake-up time. The light gradually brightens, like the sun rising. During those thirty minutes, the light falls on your eyes and positively affects the production of energy hormones. This means that at the set alarm time your sleep and energy hormones are better balanced, and you feel more energetic when you wake up.

    Sleep and the Biological Clock

Optimal mood and functioning are associated with an appropriate alignment of sleep and wakefulness with the timing of the biological clock. Not only is mood, subjective impression of sleep quality, feeling of vigour and activity a affected by the time of awakening but also by the manner of the awakening (whether voluntary or involuntary). One of the main synchronisers of the biological clock with the 24 hour day is light, particularly dawn light.

The biological clock is particularly sensitive and its timing resettable by the effects of dawn light. Involuntary or unexpected awakenings are associated with a stress response. It is possible to reduced this stress by planning awakenings. A combination of a planned awakening, supported by appropriate exposure to dawn light can lead to: wakefulness that is properly synchronised with the biological clock, an awakening that is stress free and associated with feelings of vigour and pleasantness and consequently a day starting with optimal mood and function.

Wake-up Light Introduces a Healthy Balance of Time Duration and Light Intensity to Wake you Up

Does your early morning routine see you hitting the snooze button on your alarm repeatedly before you can make yourself rise each day? Well, you can now get rid of your noisy alarm and rise a new way; with light. Rise and shine easily and energetically with simulated sunlight just the way nature intended, thanks to the new Wake-up Light from Philips. From half an hour before your required wake-up time, the Philips Wake-up Light emits light that gradually increases to the intensity you have selected, simulating the rising sun in your bedroom thus gently preparing your body to wake up. Research proves that dawn simulation improves subjective measures of energy, mood, productivity, quality of sleep and quality of awakening

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I absolutely love waking up with this lamp. The room lights up slowly over half-an-hour, gently guiding me out of the land of nod rather than throwing me out suddenly by shrieking in my ear like my old audio alarm. I particularly like the way that its brightness can be pre-set, so if I get used to it up to the point that I end up sleeping through, I can just set it to come on brighter. There's also a nice range of audio alarms to accompany the light, from beeps to birdsong, as well as a Digital FM radio. Like the light, the volume also gradually increases until it reaches your pre-selected level. It's undoubtedly the most pleasant way to wake up on those dark winter mornings that I've found so far.

When I first set it up & saw it had 2 sets of switches in different places, I was concerned it would be difficult to use but I've gotten used to it very quickly. What's also nice is that the buttons are distinctly textured, so it's easy to find what you're looking for in the dark. The orange-brown colour of the LED ensures it isn't overpoweringly bright, which I find LED's on many modern electronics can be. Its brightness is also adjustable & as the lamp illuminates 360 degrees, it can be turned around so the display is away from you anyway.

It's a pity that Philips were restricted to installing a Digital FM radio rather than a DAB one but I guess that integrating a DAB would make what is already a large bit of kit even bigger, with even more fiddly buttons. The radio is adequate with a wire-type aerial but will not be replacing my bedside DAB.

Reviews of earlier models of Philips Wake-Up Lights indicate that sadly rather a high percentage of them seem to develop faults. It's too early to say whether the HF3485 is any more reliable than its predecessors but Philips have confidently provided it with a 2-year warranty, which even covers the bulb. Its says in Amazons' blurb above that they will replace it if any faults arise in the first year & Philips will repair or replace it free of charge in the second. It's nice to see that Philips have responded to the negative feedback by now giving its customers comprehensive cover. Mine works perfectly so far but if it does develop a fault, I'll amend this review accordingly.

By Keith Joseph HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The lab where we work doesn't have any windows just strip lights, so my work colleague has one of those little 'artificial sun-light' lamps, which she uses a lot. She tends to find winters can be a bit hard and suffers symptoms listed under 'Seasonal Affective Disorder', or SAD. Waking up in early Winter in complete darkness is likely to be part of the problem, so I got her this little wake-up lamp [which apparently her mum had recommended to her as well]. Personally I can't stand the bright 'artificial sunlight lamp' she has, as it's too bright [some SAD lamps are adjustable though], but this little bedside lamp comes on slowly to mimic daybreak/sunrise and so is far more gentle. My colleague thought it a good idea, and gave it a go.

And she said it's really good, although she only needs to use it during darkest winter, between say November and March [like me she has thin curtains so daylight naturally wakes her up during the rest of the year - we both don't need alarm clocks]. If you have to rise very early in the morning I guess the lamp would still be useful at other times of the year as well. So it's a massive hit. She doesn't use the radio alarm [FM/VHF not DAB unfortunately] or MP3 playback via a USB stick that often, but it's there is you want to try it - it's the daylight sunrise bulb feature that gets used. The audio alarm replays restful bird tweet tweet type MP3s that get more insistent [4 are built in], and to supplement these there are various downloads from Philips to help with the waking experience by providing audio tracks via a USB stick in the side of the lamp [e.g. Heavenly Angels, Beach Mood, African Savannah, Rhythm of Life etc.].

The unit also plays any audio tracks provided they are on a cheap USB data stick inserted into the lights USB2 socket - the audio files must be in Windows MP3 or WMA format only [not Apple AAC]. The maximum number of folder [albums] supported is 99, holding up to a maximum of 999 audio tracks in total. Although it's just + or - buttons to scan through the tracks simply numbered 0001 up to 0999, holding the button down increases the scan speed. The songs are numbered by the date the file was written on the USB stick, with the earliest audio file being number 0001. Any audio track can be selected from the USB2 stick to use as the alarm sound. Likewise you can use the FM radio for the alarm. There's also separate buttons for volume +/- and Alarm on/off. Sound quality is adaquate not great, similar to a cheap radio-alarm clock. Modifying the lamp's alarm/sleep settings is a bit fiddly until you get used to it, so it helps to keep the manual close to hand.

There's a 9 minute snooze [audio/music/FM only], the daylight bulb is user replaceable [lasts ~4000 hours], there's a 15 min battery backup for the digital clock, and the sunrise simulation is adjustable from 20 to 40 minutes. The lamp can also be set to give a gradually dimming 'dusk simulation' to help you get to sleep, adjustable from 15 to 90 minutes. This Philips unit is 25.2 cm (height) x 17.0 cm (diameter), and it weights a hefty but stable 1.45 kg and draws 85 W when on [0-250 Lux at 40-50 cm]. The power cord is 200cm and the discrete digital clock display has 4 brightness settings. You can switch the main lamp on and off like a normal bedside light as well. It comes with a 2 year guarentee. So 5* as it seems to work for SAD sufferers, and it is a well thought out design - bit expensive though. Size wise, although its certainly not minute, it is smaller, squatter, and more discrete than some other SAD lamps I have seen, and many shaded bedside lamps for that matter.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have used this for a few nights, and as a bed-side lamp and radio, it's great.

And, for waking me up, I do seem less tired when waking, which I reckon might well be down to the way in which the light comes on.

The functionality (which should not stop you purchasing) is a little confusing: the light level can't be pre-set, so that if I use it at a low level then that's the level the waking-light will use. It would be much better if a light level for waking could be pre-set.

The USB socket does not charge my iPhone, which is a shame, nor does it read my iPhone's mp3 files. Previous incarnations of this light have included a docking port, so its omission on this latest model is a shame.

The radio is fine, though it's a shame it's not a DAB radio.

All the menu functions take a little while to figure out, but they are intuitive, and functionality then becomes simple with a little practice.

The [...] price-tag seems a bit steep, but I really like the product.
