How does it work?
Set your wake-up time and your preferred light intensity and volume setting before you go to sleep. From half an hour before your set wake-up time, light gradually increases to the intensity you selected (250 Lux advised). The light brightens at an optimum rate, following a special curve proven to be most effective. The light falls on your eyes, sending your brain a message to increase the production of cortisol, the energy hormone. This means that at the set alarm time your sleep and energy hormones are better balanced and you'll feel more energetic right from the start of the day. At your set wake-up, sound will come on very quietly and will also increase gradually until it reaches the required volume.

Great to wake up to, but beware the HUM! It might drive you mad...,
By
This review is from: Philips HF3463 Wake-up Light with Radio Alarm (Personal Care)
This is great to wake up to, the set up is easy and the radio works well, with the particularly nice feature that it slowly comes up to volume so there is no shock awakening after the slow illumination of the light.
My only warning is that it makes a low electric humming noise at all times, either from the transformer or dimmer switch, I'm not sure. If you are sensitive to noise at night (like me) it may drive you mad; i've read of other people lasting one night and ejecting it from their bedroom. The first one we had was terrible, and the replacement is slightly better. However, I've only got used to it as it is on my wife's side of the bed, sitting on a foam plinth (which seems to absorb some of the vibration) and if I turn over to face the other way I can't hear it. Philips have been particularly unhelpful, saying only: "The query you have in regards to your Wake Up Light is normal as it will make a buzzing sound as this will to do with the technology inside the unit. It won't always be heard as it all depends on the enviroment it s situated in and during certain parts of the day, but this is normal." A peculiar comment I feel as, as an alarm clock it will clearly be 'situated' in your bedroom, and you will be closest to it at night, the quietest part of the day! Regardless, now we are used to it, we wouldn't be without it.

Fantastic for those who cannot get up in the morning,
By Scrumpy Cida (Somerset) - See all my reviews I was so fed up of my teenager being bad tempered and always running late I have just bought one for her. She has only used it a few days, but said it is great and doesn't feel moody when she wakes, and now has time to spare in the morning. You choose the light brightness 0 - 20, and the sound you want to wake up to, FM radio, 3 x nature sounds, alarm beep. I can't praise it enough.

Fantastic, best present ever!,
By
This review is from: Philips HF3463 Wake-up Light with Radio Alarm (Personal Care)
My husband bought me this last October as I have suffered depression for years which is made much worse by the lack of daylight in the winter, I have really bad episodes in October and November and again late Jan to Feb.
It is the best ever present, during the winter I now wake up ready to face the day - if not quite raring to go! And felt so much better, it was worth every penny. I would thouroughly recommend this to anyone who suffers from S.A.D. or lack of get up and go on the winter mornings.
