5.0 out of 5 stars Great little player 29 Dec 2005
By A Customer
This is a very slick and sexy little player and so high tech with touch sensitive controls that light up with blue leds in response to even the slightest touch.
The sound is fantastic and you’re not restricted to using just Windows media player, I got this synchronizing with Real player with no problems what so ever.
You don’t really need to use the supplied CD-ROM if you don’t want to if running XP, just plug in and go, although the one really useful thing to have from the CD-ROM is the device manager which is handy for firmware updates.
Don’t make the same mistake as I made when I set this thing for auto synch, as soon as it got going started downloading all music files from my PC and was gob smacked at the speed this thing was going while downloading, believe me it’s fast. Set this cute little thing for manual synch and you can’t go wrong.
Forget about the IPOD Nano, leave that to all the lemmings out there. Only two in my book that are now the real Nano beaters, the new Sony and this super sexy and high tech little thing.
So far I’ve yet to find any fault or problems, the Philips HDD1620 is fantastic, gob smacking fast at downloading you’re music, sounds great, not restricted to using just one particular software, just use anything that can synch to portable players. So high tech with the touch sensitive controls would you want to go back to the IPOD click wheel after using this?

5.0 out of 5 stars A seriously good choice 20 July 2006
By Sohnee
Verified Purchase
Having considered with an open mind MP3 players such as the Apple i-Pod, Creative Jukebox and SONY walkman (as well as some practically unknown brands that appealed on the price front...) I have to say that this MP3 player does it all. I've now owned this 6GB version for quite some time and I'm yet to encounter a problem.

You don't have to use any manufacturer software like i-tunes or the SONY manager, you just synchronise via Windows Media Player (version 10 supported - version 11 supported soon) the interface is an excellent touch-sensitive menu system and it plays MP3 and WMA (without changing the format). You won't be able to play those pesky DRM (licensed / digital rights) WMA files - but out of the 3,000 songs I have, this only applied to 4 tracks and it only cost 77p each to buy MP3 versions.

Importantly, it has a really good quality sound that you're unlikely to get in a cheaper player. You can even customise the EQ settings if you don't like one of the preset ones.

Shuffle mode plays songs with practically no gap inbetween and you can create an "on the go" playlist of your favorites as they appear. Loads of different ways of getting to the sounds, by album, artist, genre and most played.

I listen to music a lot and this player makes that much easier - I couldn't recommend it more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice 29 Nov 2005
By A Customer
Ive only owned this player for a very short while but so far it is great.
It is the best looking mp3 ive ever seen. it is easy to use and anyone familiar with the ipod controls will find this no problem. storage is very good and the voice recording facility is very good; the quality of recording from such a small microfone is exeptional. Also it was on my doorstep within two days of ordering so good one amazon. very good player however:
the one i have now is actually my second one because the first one i got didn't switch on or charge or do anything. that was only a small setback and must just have been the individual unit as there appears to be no problems with my new one.
In my opinion the ipod mini is dated now compared to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW- READ THIS REVIEW PLEASE 3 May 2006
You must read this review if you're thinking about buying a quality MP3 player. Are you thinking about buying an iPOD? Think again!! This is far better than the Nano, iPOD Mini or the iPOD Photo. At the bargain Amazon price you have to buy it!!! I bought this MP3 player 1 month ago- no problems, it works like a beauty (not a beast as suggested in some of the other reviews) and its packed with features. It's so easy to tranfer music, photos and data to the philips HDD1620- with Windows Media Player 10. All the software is supplied and easy to use. With 6gb memory- thats 3000 songs or 1600 pictures, you will never use the memory up. It's one of the cheapest 6gb MP3 players around, but don't think that makes it poor quality.

The picture viewer is amazing with a full colour screen.
The awesome touch sensitive controls are so cool. Little blue LED lights follow your fingers as you scroll down through your song or artists.

Another great feature is the Album Cover viewer. As you scroll through the albums an image of the Album cover appears on screen. This may not sound so great but it really is.

The earphones supplied are great and they come with 3 different heads to fit different sized ears. The silicon pouch which is also supplied is good, but unfortunately doesn't protect the screen from scratching.

This MP3 is a must buy so ignore the much to overrated iPOD and go for this snazzy little fellow.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fatally flawed 30 Mar 2006
At the time of writing, - I have owned the Philips HDD1620 for less than two weeks. Although beautiful looking, the device is not without its flaws, some of them serious.

First of all the high gloss, ultra smooth exterior of the player is simply awful and shows up even the slightest of finger marks and smudges. So much so I have now actually given up trying to keep it clean, as it just proves impossible. To compound this, there is a matt surface rubber sleeve included in the box designed to encase the player. Now where the player shows all marks and smudges, the rubber sleeve is excellent in picking up all dust, dirt and fibres.

Combined together, the gloss and matt finishes completely spoil the cosmetic look of the player, and succeed in making it look old and scruffy even when brand new. The mind boggles at how Philips allowed these designs to get through their R&D testing. I can only assume it was tested in a totally dust and dirt free environment as in the real world, you can quickly forget about keeping it clean.

The player also has a tendency to hang - three times in a fortnight - despite manufacturer claims this is rare. One of these was a fatal hang which required the hard drive to be 'repaired' (i.e. reformatted). Not a quick process if you have to re-upload hundreds of songs in your collection time after time.

The sound is okay, not that I have much to compare it to, only cheaper players. The touch sensitive navigation system however is very good and pretty intuitive. This is especially useful when in my car (via a cassette adaptor) as a simple tap is all it takes to jump between songs.

Would I buy it again? Probably not. The dirt and dust factor alone would put me off recommending one to anyone else.
