If it had an MP3 Encoder - an in-line way to convert your music from your Hi-Fi direct into the device (without the need of a PC) in MP3.
However, it has a FM Radio - which uses the earphone lead as the aerial, to reasonable effect (I have never had much luck with small radios - I always loose the signal)
Apparently, according to some reports, you can record from the Radio into MP3 - but, I have to say, I don't actually think you can (or its being kept a secret!)
One downside is that you cannot use windows explorer to drag and drop - well, actually you can - but the player won't play the songs!! You have to use the Philips Software (I think for copyright reasons) - I still think its a bit Big Brother and completely unecessary.
PLEASE NOTE:- This player is a Hard Disk player, and, as such, doesn't take shocks! Look for a solid state player if you want to take it into the gym for high impact!!!
The quality of the earphones is top notch - as is the sound quality ........ imagine, all the songs you EVER bought or want to listen to on your hip in a tiny player like this??? AMAZING!
To think, not too long ago, you had to have a tape player and 100's of tapes to get what you get here!? I have put the first record I EVER bought on to it ...... just to remind me how far technology has come!
I considered the i-Pod ....... but EVERYONE has one (and if they haven't they'll mug you for yours!)
I considered the i-River players (5 stars and highly rated), but were a bit big and expensive.
This Philips HDD070 at £139, or cheaper, is a bargain - in my opinion.
Oh, yes, I'm an old fella and can get along with it just fine! :-)

This mp3 is absolutely fantastic. It is lightweight, easy to use, has great sound quality, and is perfect for anyone who doesn't want to fork out on buing an i-pod.
It holds an immense amout of songs - 1000 - and lasts for 10 hours when fully charged.
It comes with cool coloured stickers that you can put on and change whenever you like.
The earphones are great as well - they are comfortable, and the sound quality is fantastic, its so clear and crystal.
The software you have to use - despite many negative comments - is actually easy to use, and very efficient.
The player itself is easy to use too - and has a cool look to it.
There is actually only one bad point - the screen. It is too small - and the song titles get cut off.
Apart from this minor problem, this player is really worth buying.
