My biggest gripe with toasters is that the slots are seldom big enough for typical slices of bread. This Philips toaster stands out by having nice deep, long slots that amply accommodate large slices, and that would be sufficient for it to be high on anyone's list. The slots are also wide enough to take scones, crumpets, etc, and the toaster toasts everything evenly and quickly. Plus it is reassuringly solid and straightforward, in an era plagued by bizarrely-shaped toasters with overly-fancy controls that are flimsy and fragile to use.
Full marks to Philips for not succumbing to such fripperies, and concentrating instead on just doing things right. Which isn't to say this toaster is basic; in addition to the obvious browning control, it has defrost and reheat settings, as well as an easily-removeable crumb tray and a "high-lift" for removing small or awkward items. It really does everything one could want from a toaster; simply, reliably and without fuss.
Another big plus is that it's not as ridiculously bulky as many other current toasters, and the outside is well enough insulated not to become too hot to touch during use. It beats everything else in its price range; even toasters twice the price or more have no compelling advantages, and the 2-year guarantee that Philips offers is better than most other brands.
My only minor gripe is that the main lever requires a good push to lock into the 'on' position; this is perhaps an ironic consequence of the high-quality and solidity with which it's made, but could be difficult for anyone with severe mobility or dexterity problems in their hands. For that reason alone I give it four rather than five stars.
