It's small, plasticky (?) and very light.
But, for what it is, it's superb. Sounds great and is moderately easy to use.
If you buy one, don't bother with 'Songbird' (the Philips alternative to iTunes to manage the music). Songbird is monumentally bad. Download Winamp from the Winamp site - it's free. Winamp will manage this perfectly. Note that it (the player) only plays MP3's, so it won't play lossless or WAV, or any fancy stuff!
Make a good present for a youngster.
Firstly let's address the main gripe most people seem to have with this product (and every other generic mp3 player)No, it's not an ipod. It's not as slick and sexy and shiny and as desirable. However you don't expect a ferrari for volkswagen prices.I bought this for my daughter who is 8 and she adores it.
What you do get is a tiny, lightweight, well put together music player that stores more music than you need and plays it back with more than respectable quality at good volume if required.The user interface on the player is slick and easy to master and the decent screen makes navigation a breeze. Add to this the bonus of being able to view album artwork, photos and even mp4 video (you wouldn't watch a movie on it but I've converted a few home movie clips and the odd episode of spongebob squarepants and it's perfectly adequate)and all in all this is a very talented little unit at really not much cost at all.
The philips songbird software for managing your playlists isn't as good as itunes but you really don't need to bother with it. I have an iphone (I'm not anti-Apple, I'm just anti- £140 music players for 8 year olds)and so all my music is in itunes. All I do is drag and drop my itunes aac files into Format Factory (downloadable freeware that converts music/video formats-google it!)convert them to mp3 and then drag and drop these into the players hard drive. The whole process takes seconds and means you don't have to have your music stored in multiple libraries.
In summary it's well put together, well thought out,fit for purpose and very competetively priced.
