Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Digital music - anytime
Enjoy 27 hours* of great MP3 and WMA music with the Philips GoGear Raga MP3 player. Easily search for your favourite songs by album or artist.

Equalizer presets enable you to change levels to best suit genre of music
Use equalizer settings to optimise
sound

MP3 and WMA playback
Audio compression technology allows large digital music files to be reduced up to 10 times in size without radically degrading their audio quality. MP3 or WMA are two of the compression formats that let you enjoy a world of digital music on your GoGear player. Download MP3 or WMA songs from authorised music sites on the Internet or create your own MP3 or WMA music files by ripping your audio CDs and transferring them onto your player.

Equalizer to suit your music preferences
GoGear Players with Equalizer, utilise technology to automatically set the optimum sound frequency balance for a chosen music style. Whether it is Jazz, Rock or Pop that you are listening to, using the Equalizer preset setting allows you to enjoy the optimum sound for that music style.

Up to 27-hour music playback*
Allows you to enjoy your music on the go for up to 27 hours of continuous music playback on a single charge.

Voice recording to take notes or record anything, anytime
Voice recording converts your GoGear player into a handy dictation machine. Besides playing music, you can also record notes or reminders for work or school, record shopping lists and phone numbers - even song lyrics. By pressing the recording button and speaking into the built-in microphone, voice messages are compressed and stored in the built-in internal memory. Voice recording gives you a highly portable voice recorder allowing you to record anything, anytime and anywhere!

The Raga MP3 player is the size of a golf ball
The GoGear Raga is roughly the same size
as a golf ball

Small and wearable for ultimate portability
For the ultimate in music portability, this Philips GoGear player is ready to wear and ready to go. The lightweight and ultra-compact device gives you superior sound quality and a true portable entertainment experience on the move.

3-line black and white display for easy reading
A user-friendly three-line display gives you greater music enjoyment on the go. Besides keeping you abreast of song titles, elapsed song times and remaining battery power status, it also lets you scroll through your music library and view more detailed music information such as artists and albums.

Drag and drop your songs easily - no software needed
You can quickly and easily copy your music collection from your PC to your GoGear player. Simply connect your GoGear to your PC while in Windows® Explorer, select the songs or the folders that you want to copy to your player, then drag the selected files to the GoGear's music folder. It is that simple. No additional software installation is needed!

Storage capacity based on 4 minutes per song and 64 kbps WMA or 128 kbps MP3 encoding. Actual transfer speed may vary based on your operating system and software configuration.

1GB = 1 billion bytes; available storage capacity will be less. Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced.

*Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings.

Owning a lot of Philips products, I know that handling them isn't always easy. So I was very surprised when using this thing for the first time. I was looking for a simple MP3 player and knowing that Philips always delivered a certain amount of quality for your quid the choice was rather easy. I plugged the player to my computer and installed the software(this is only necessary if you want to do firmware upgrades). After I got rid of the preview music I loaded up some of my MP3s, started the thing, and enjoyed the music. This is the real plug and play, I mean some of my players always had trouble with ID3 tags or I needed to configure the player in order to do shuffled play, but not with this thing, plug your earphones and listen to the music and even the shuffle is a decent randomization not that load of horse manure you get with the cheap ones these days. There are no batteries, but the lithium-ION does surprise with long lasting playtimes before reloading the player at your computer. One downside of this product, you don't get a charging device, but charging it over USB did go rather quick, however I believe that mini USB chargers would work on this one too. Why only 4 stars? Well every time I start the player he updates the playlist, even though I did not do any changes to it, this takes about 20 seconds, but I can live with that. And secondly Philips has gone to delivery with cheap earphones, I remember buying a Diskman years ago and they delivered it with at last 15 worth of earphones that had a decent quality, but now you only get earphones worth a quid and are supposed to buy new ones if you want a better quality or bass support.
Remember this is only a MP3-Player, you can't play movies on this thing, which for me is enough, I don't need an IPod and all that glamour that comes with it, I just want to listen to music.

If you have any objections to my review, feel free to keep them to thyself. ;)

Basic, But Functional 15 Jan 2010
    DESIGN:
It's extremely small and light, but certainly not the most stylish looking player, and the sharp edges mean it doesn't feel very comfortable to hold either. The buttons and (monochrome) screen are tiny, but useable.

    EASE OF USE:
The menu system is logical, the play controls simple, and the pc connection / file transfer system very easy to use.

    FEATURES:
It supports mp3 and wma audio files (not images or movies), and has a the usual assortment of playback options (no playlist editing though). It has a voice recorder (with built-in mic), but not much else. One of the best features of this player is it's battery life - a very impressive 27 hours.

    SOUND QUALITY:
As with most mp3 players, the supplied headphones are rubbish. However, with a decent set of earbuds, it actually sounds pretty good, and produces plenty of volume - only the bass is slightly lacking.
There is also a graphic equaliser with the usual handful of presets, and a custom mode.

    SUMMARY:
If you're looking for a cheap, no-frills music player, then the Raga is hard to beat. If you want a more stylish or feature-rich player, then look elsewhere.

Overall a very good product at a very reasonable price. If what you want is an easy peice of equipment to use put music onto and very small and versatile, this is it. I think the sound is easily good enough but maybe hi-fi buffs would differ
