High-definition headphones for precise sound
These ergonomically designed headphones with exceptional noise isolation feature precisely direct soundwaves from the speaker to your ear drums with the highest definition. With sound isolation, you will hear and enjoy greater music details at a lower volume than is possible with normal headphones. Based on a thorough understanding of the human ear canal anatomy, the sound isolation earphone's angled acoustic design creates a perfect seal between the ambient sound source and the ear canal, thus eliminating unwanted background noise while delivering sound directly to your ears. Even at a moderate volume setting, you can still discern music details without noise distractions from the environment. Earphone sleeves are available in three sizes to provide the best fit.

The Philips GoGear Ariaz 4GB is a very portable MP3 player providing a great range of features including music, video, radio, pictures, recordings and text reader. A tad bigger than the first generation iPod Nano the Ariaz has a 2" screen providing a very clear picture perfect for viewing videos and photos.

Installation of the software is quick and easy and important this is done before connecting it. It comes supplied with a 4" USB cable so I recommend keeping it on a flat surface as the USB could easily become damaged with the weight of the Ariaz. Charging it only takes 3 hours first time round which when just listening to the radio provided me with around 10 hours play time however this is reduced when watching videos to around 6 hours. With 4GB there is a good amount of space holding up to 900 songs, 1600 pictures or 8 hours of video.

On connecting it is quick and easy to transfer files by dragging and dropping into the relevant folders. Music can be ripped from CDs easily through Windows Media Player 11 and also synced with it to help transfer easily. The Media Converter changes video files .smv files to be viewed on the Ariaz. I love downloading and watching videos from BBC iPlayer - they make it easy to do by reducing the file size for portable devices however keeping a high quality picture.

Unlike the Opus, the Ariaz also comes with a Text reader. By just pasting text into Notepad and saving as a txt file you can view them on the Ariaz. The file name is shown at the top, the text and then it shows you the percentage of how far you are through the file. The only real disadvantage is the text is white against the black background which makes my eyes go funny.

My thoughts on this MP3 player are very mixed.

On the positive side: it looks nice and is relatively intuitive to use. It's easy to put things on it and to take things off, using the drag and drop method. It has a radio built in. It has plenty of memory.

On the negative side, it has not been too reliable. It freezes every now and again, meaning you have to use the reset button. To be fair, the reset button is easy to use (you can use the earphone jack to press it) and it doesn't wipe all your files, but it is annoying when it freezes.

And sometimes, despite having told you it is fully charged, it just goes dead and you have to recharge it again from scratch before it will work again. This means I hesitate to rely on it for long journeys where I have nothing else to do.

It recharges via the PC instead of taking batteries which has its advantages and disadvantages. No batteries means no added expense and no batteries to buy, recharge or discard. However, if it runs down when you're away from the PC (or goes dead in its occasional fashion) then you can't just nip in a newsagent for more power.

When it works this MP3 player is fine, but the problem is you can't rely on it.

This is better than some of the other philips mp 3/4 players as I found the menus to be much more intuative and simply where I expected them to be.

The right hand side is a motion 'big' button which you push in different places for different effects; this too worked bether than some other gogears as the bits you can press are labled.

The headphones are the better quality philips ones and the sound quality is outstanding. I feel it's this quality that draws you in to a clip/movie/tv show as the screen is a great quality if small 2inches.

The radio quality is better than my stereo.

It's easy to use to littles to music/books/radio, just pop it in your pocket with the button lock on. Clips are also good, but more than 20 mins holding your arm out to watch something longer? But this is a problem with all mp4 players.

best one i've seen in ages.

The GoGear Ariaz is a very neat little player, offering mobile music (.mp3), video (.wmv and .smv), audiobooks (Audible proprietary .aa format), photos (.jpg) and FM radio. Once I deleted the demo tracks (which are painfully low bit-rate mp3s), and loaded some of my own music, I found the sound quality with the included in-ear headphones to be extremely good.

The screen is very bright, with a good viewing angle - although small, it is quite adequate for watching films and TV programs on the move. Downloading programs from BBC iPlayer is very straightforward - the "portable" version is approx. 250MB for a one-hour show; once downloaded, open briefly in Windows Media Player in order to retrieve the copy-protection certificate, and then copy across to the GoGear.

The FM radio is very clear, and provides an effective auto-tune facility. Manual programming of the present is rather more fiddly.

Battery life seems good, and recharging from the USB port is very convenient so long as you have a computer handy (perhaps less useful if you go on holiday without taking your laptop).

The user interface is reasonable, but could be better. The main controls consist of a two-axis rocker panel to the right of the screen (left, right, options and back), surrounding a single-axis rocker switch (up, down) which in turn surrounds a play/pause button. Volume and power are separate controls on the top and bottom edges respectively. It is quite easy accidentally to press the main rocker suface while trying to operate one of the other controls (such as volume).
