Amazon Verified Purchase
Having had dreadful experiences with R75 reflector lamps and downlighters and not wanting to use halogens which generate a lot of waste heat, when we rebuilt the kitchen I decided to use LEDs throughout. THE name seemed to be Philips Master 7W LEDs although I also discovered 6W Cree lamps (not purchased through Amazon). In one part of the kitchen I have eight ceiling-mounted Philips; in the other, six Cree (plus five more in a lighting bar). I tracked down ceiling downlighters which accepted both lamps (not from Amazon) as the lamps are difference lengths (although equivalent in diameter to halogens). All told, it has been a very successful project. The Philips are a cool white (at 4200K colour temp); the Crees are even cooler (at 6400K) but this difference serves to draw attention to the two different areas of the kitchen. (Both are available at a lower colour temp if you don't like the cool, bluish light.)

I know these are expensive but I calculate that the LEDs will pay for themselves in under five years.

If you are considering LED lamps bear in mind the need for appropriate downlighters (if you want to be able to use other lengths of lamps), different colour temps, illumination angle (the Philips are 40 deg and a good compromise), power output in incandescent / halogen equivalents (you need at least 6W or 7W LEDs for main lighting). You'll probably find that your local lighting store doesn't know much about LEDs and will try to put you off but the technology is progressing rapidly and I would say that they are now feasible for kitchens and bathrooms at least. Unusually, the Philips are also dimmable - which presumably is why they are longer than most LEDs.

I've been pleased with these lamps and can recommend them, certainly for kitchen use.
