Product Description

Delivering a warm, halogen-like accent beam, the 6W MASTER LEDspot MV is a perfect fit for spot lighting. It is particularly suitable to areas where the light is on over extended periods of time. The 6W MASTER LEDspot MV delivers huge energy savings and minimises maintenance cost without any compromise on brightness. These LEDspots are compatible with most existing fixtures with a GU10 holder and designed as a retrofit replacement for halogen or incandescent spots. The dimmable versions drive further efficiencies, while helping to create the desired atmosphere.

I was uncertain about spending so much on bulbs, but decided to replace my 6 kitchen halogen spots with these. The first thing to note is that they are exact replacements when it comes to size. If the halogen fits, this will fit - unlike some cheaper LED GU10 bulbs I tried.

When taking them out of the packet you immediately notice the quality - these are precision crafted, robustly made and look attractive. Quality of light is superb. I went for the "Neutral White" shade. For a kitchen or bathroom they are perfect - an improvement on the yellowish halogens but not nearly as harsh as some of the "Pure White" LED alternatives. In terms of brightness, I would say they are slightly brighter than the 50w halogens they replaced. Beam spread is equivalent.

With an 85% electricity saving I should notice the difference in my bills. And since they should last 20 times as long as a halogen I won't have to worry about replacing them for at least a decade. There are cheaper LED GU10 bulbs out there. I know because I have a few of them. A bulb costing a third as much will probably do the job. But none of them match this bulb in terms of overall quality.

My living room replacement light must have correct colour temperature, which many inferior LEDs claiming 'warm white' failed. Those are only good for white tile bathrooms. These pricy 2013 Philips are worth it though! Side by side, it is a touch dimmer than a brand new 50W halogen but noticeably brighter than a 35W. I'd say roughly at 45W halogen equivalent. LED efficiency goes down the more warm they are, so more impressive is achieving the colour temperature at this brightness at just 6W! Again side by side, these Philips are only ever so slightly whiter than a brand new halogen which by themselves, they are pleasantly warm white, perfectly acceptable. The light spread is also adequate, not too focused and great for general illumination (mine are the 40 degree version). Lastly, there is no audible buzz from the micro transformer. Everything suggests to me this is made with top quality components manufactured to a high standard worthy of the brand name and price. Although I have not measured the actual power consumption, I can imagine the micro transformer is highly efficient too. I also have Philips 4W MR16 low voltage bulbs which are equally impressive at delivering brightness and colour temperature. My MR16s are almost 2yr old and no problem, these GU10 have been fine since March 2013 so I hope they do perform consistently like my older MR16s.

Although the cost is IMO relatively high for just a light bulb, the electricity savings make them a no-brainer. Just had my electricity bill for the winter quarter and it's down by a third. Also really pleased with the quality of the light and the pattern. Possibly a little bluer than the bulbs they replaced but for a kitchen, just perfect. In fact, the quality of the light is so good, I'm planning to replace the GU10s I have in my bedroom.

This is the first LED replacement that I've been happy to continue using. I've tried a few from LED Hut and elsewhere but returned them because the output didn't match the claim, the light characteristics were so unpleasant, the light spread was too wide, or the size was greater than the non-LED equivalent.

I'm not convinced this one's quite as bright as a 50w halogen and my camera's light meter agrees. But it gets close, so, while I've deducted a star, I'd still buy it. I like the quality of the light and the narrow beam angle - ideal for pointing at objects or bouncing light off a wall. Perhaps most importantly, it really is the same size as the halogen it replaced.

The only real problem is the high price but, if its life span matches the claimed 40,000 hours, it will be worth its current 23.43 price. Not only will it pay for itself after about 4,000 hours (3 years @ 3.5 hours per day, in my case), it will also save the hassle of occasional lamp changes.

Colour Name: Warm White Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
If this lasts the rated 40,000 hours, a single bulb should save over £200 in electricity costs alone, compared with a 50W halogen. That's pretty impressive. Since that's 4.5 years of continual burn time, I'm (hopefully) not going to know if the rated lifetime is accurate for a long while yet!

The bulb gives off a warm light that is pretty close to halogen, although still slightly cooler. The bulb is dimmable, although the colour of a dimmed halogen bulb is very different from this LED bulb (much more orange), so the soft-lighting experience is not the same.

My one slight disappointment is that the diffuser is of much smaller diameter than the reflector of a standard GU10 halogen (due to the large silver ring around the face of the bulb). This means that the light seems more like a point source than a diffuse circle. Not only is it more glaring to look at, but it casts much more defined shadows on the walls. I haven't measured the beam angle, but there is a slightly strange double cone effect, with most of the light being in a relatively narrow cone (presumably 40 degrees), surrounded by a further, wider cone of more diffuse light. This isn't really a problem, but it's not quite the same as my halogen GU10s which just cast one main cone of light.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed. They run cool enough to be able to touch comfortably and will clearly save a lot of electricity. Personally, I prefer an even wider beam angle, such as that provided by the SuperLEDTM GU10, but this Philips bulb is the closest attempt I've seen to approximating a halogen GU10 bulb.
