What is OptimalTEMP technology?

Optimal moisture and a heat of 130 degrees is required to remove all creases and iron effectively. PerfectCare, with its OptimalTEMP technology, offers the combination of high steam pressure with one optimal temperature that is safe for use on all ironable fabrics.

OptimalTEMP has been made possible thanks to the cyclonic steam chamber and the control processor. The cyclonic steam chamber ensures that, at a gentle temperature, consistently high steam can be delivered at the push of a button, where other steam generators at the same temperature would leak or deliver little to no steam. The control processor keeps the soleplate at a consistent temperature at all times, which makes it safe to use on all ironable fabrics, never being too hot or too cold.

Earlier irons used a hot soleplate alone as a means of removing creases and pressing garments. Later, the addition of a steam feature allowed for ironing with greater ease and speed, but required different temperature settings for different fabrics. Different temperature settings also interfered with the iron's ability to deliver steam. The higher the temperature, the more steam was possible, but the lower the temperature, the poorer the steam output.

Because of this, all irons and steam generators work with a soleplate of up to 260 degrees to generate enough steam. Furthermore, the soleplate serves only to press fabric, not to remove creases, steam is most efficient for this job.

Features

Philips
OptimalTEMP Technology

1) Soleplate temperature is maintained at all times, so you can't burn your fabrics.
2) High temperature and high pressure steam reaches deep into the fabric layers to loosen and smooth out deep creases in thick materials such as linen and pure cotton.

Philips
Approved by independent experts

This technology has been tested and approved by independent textile experts on the most delicate fabrics like silk, cashmere, wool and polyester.

Philips
No more scorched clothes

This iron promises to never burn your garments again, safely rest this iron flat down on the ironing board or clothing, rather than the heel rest, to reduce any risk of repetitive strain on your wrist.

Philips
Powerful pressurised steam for faster crease removal

Steam output is measured in grams of weight as it leaves the soleplate. The heavier the output the deeper the steam can reach into the fabric layers for longer lasting crease removal. This steam iron has a powerful continuous steam output of 65g per minute for consistently fast results and a 200g steam boost for deep crease removal.

Philips
Vertical Steam

The iron can be used vertically and the steam is powerful enough to be used to iron out creases from curtains or hanging clothes for example suit jackets or dresses that might need a refresh.

Philips
Maximum steam in two minutes

No more waiting for your iron to heat up, PerfectCare has a quick heat-up time and is ready to use in just 2 minutes, even the powerful steam. Turn it on, prepare your ironing area and get ready to go.

Philips
Calc clean solution

This iron contains permanent anti-calc pills that prevent the build-up of particles found in tap water. This will give longer lasting steam performance and extend the lifetime of the iron. The cartridges demineralise the tap water turning from blue to brown after 3 months of usage to remind you when to replace them.

Philips
Optional water descaler available to purchase separately

This iron can also be complimented with the Philips IronCare GC024/10 water descale filter for irons, which removes 99%** of scale from tap water to ensure optimum performance for your iron, up to 4x longer.

Philips
Power

Get the ultimate performance and power with this 2800 watt iron. It's this high power that enables the iron start up in just 2 minutes.

Philips
Safety Auto off

To save energy, the appliance switches off automatically when it has not been moved for 3 minutes in horizontal position, or 8 minutes when left standing on its heel. To reactivate the iron, press the steam trigger and the iron starts heating up again.

Philips
SteamGlide Soleplate

Philips SteamGlide soleplate is durable, scratch resistant and provides a superior glide on all fabrics for effortless ironing. The protective material on the plate makes it scratch-resistant so your iron can stay new for longer.

Initially seems rather heavy, but in use it is fine. If you are a bit weak-wristed however you might struggle.
Water filling is fine as the flap opens from the lower edge not the side as on other Philips irons.
Build quality is excellent, the handle and grip are very comfortable and sturdy. Having no temperature control dial means there is no chance to catch your fingers on anything.
It heats up quickly.
Steam delivery is seemingly perfect and accurate. Steam boost function is activated by using two pulls of your trigger finger and is more ergonomic than the traditional top-mounted thumb button. It is a great feature in my opinion as it initiates approximately 5 seconds of intense steam for more stubborn creases so you don't have to keep anything held down. Vertical steaming is possible by holding the trigger down when holding the iron vertically, but it is here that you will feel the weight of the device, and you might not want to be operating it this way for too long to save getting arm-ache.
The soleplate is by far the best I have ever used, superior even to the anodilium soleplate of my main iron, the award-winning GC4890. It requires minimum effort to traverse items of clothing and sheets.
The actual ironing process I was initially skeptical of, as the key feature of this iron is that it has no temperature or steam level adjustments, you are meant to simply trust it not to ruin your clothes. Anything that can be ironed on a 1, 2 or 3 dot standard ironing label can be done. Weirdly, it seems to work. Nothing has yet been burnt or melted, and provided you don't make the age-old mistake of over-drying your items before ironing, it doesn't seem to take any longer to complete the ironing process.

Fed up with steam irons blocking up I bought a Polti steam generator which was great but it generated so much continuous steam that water would drip off the walls. After much googling and comparing I decided on this one. It ticks all the box's, lots of steam which stops when you stand it up and the auto select feature (no dial) really works. Feels a bit heavy but I think that helps really.

This is a good looking iron, and it does a reasonable job of ironing a range of fabrics, but I don't think that it is good value.

On the plus side it heats up quickly, is not too heavy, pumps out plenty of steam, and I suppose is good for people who might forget to turn down the temperature when they iron something delicate.

The main downside I had in day to day use was the need to refill the water frequently. Given the dire warnings that Philips make in relation to not using hard tap water, this makes for an expensive iron to buy and run.

Overall: a bit like driving a thirsty automatic, when a more economical manual would have been better.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The selling point of this iron is that it allows carefree ironing of all fabrics without a temperature setting or fear of burning or melting.

The iron itself is extremely nicely made, and is well sized and balanced. Several other reviews have commented on the weight; I didn't have a problem but I did weigh it: 1.8kg vs. 1.1kg my old 'normal' iron with cable but no water.

The steam pump inside produces an large and even flow of steam which made ironing easier, but also meant refilling a more often. Additionally I found that the bottom of the ironing board was literally dripping wet by the end.

The iron worked as advertised on all fabrics, except that cotton wasn't effectively 'flattened' until I used the steam boost function (click the trigger button twice).

Other features are that it will turn itself 'off' if left for a while, and has an eco setting that apparently reduces the heat a bit and takes a bit longer, though in practice seemed exactly the same as normal. You can also use the iron to steam vertically by using the steam boost function.

All in all, Philips have managed to improve & simplify the household iron.

I was a bit sceptical about this iron - how could it be gentle enough for delicates and yet cope with denim? However it does! It is especially good on woollens which before used to end up sticking to my old iron (because I was too impatient to wait for it to cool down). The iron is noisy (hence only 4 stars) but that is a small price to pay. It is also quite heavy but I like that - I don't have to press as hard.

Heat has always been thought to smooth out the wrinkles in fabrics. The higher the better without burning it.
Steam was introduced to better transfer that heat.

The plate being too hot has always been the culprit for damaging fabric, Never the steam. Science tells us that steam will always be at 100 C. The lowest temperature setting for all irons is 135C for synthetics. Silk at 148C.

The genius engineer at Philips said let's keep the temperature of the hot plate just a little higher than steam, the "optimal temperature", so it evaporates off the fabric. Let the steam do all the anti-wrinkle work, which alone does very well.

So can you set your current iron to the lowest temperature and keep pressing the steam button. Sure you can but the iron will likely to leak and you'll run out of steam quite quickly, You are paying for the higher water capacity, hence heavy, the technology added to prevent water leakage and constant steam generation without the big steam generator.
