Very good iron 25 Nov 2011
By jfb
I wanted a new iron to replace my old Philips. Looked at the big steaming generator iron but too heavy, noisy, require a lot of water and more expensive. This one is great: lightweight, long cable and plenty of steam ! Works a treat on all fabrics, including those difficult creases on linen shirts. I leave the "deep ironing" function on all the time and it seems to do the work.
Time spend on ironing thoses hated shirts has reduced by at least 50% ! A great product.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
We have been using this iron for over a month and are thoroughly delighted with it.

The iron has a large water tank which has clear sides. The clear sides ensure that you don't have to guess whether or not there is enough water to complete your ironing, you can just glance at the iron and assess the water level for yourself. No more waving the iron in the air to see it the water splashes around inside.

There is a click-shut cover over the water filling hole between the tip of the iron and the handle. I found this a little difficult to fill without spilling the water, even when using the water jug provided. It seemed to be a problem with the hinged click-shut cover not opening far enough and the hole being a little too small, but others may find it easier (I do not have the steadiest of hands).

The iron comes with easy controls. You get 5 main temperature settings (nylon, silk, wool, cotton and linen) which are selected by turning a dial (with a notch) under the handle. Unlike other newer irons I have used the settings are printed on rather than on a digital readout, meaning that it is easier to find the setting you require. On irons with a digital readout under the handle I have found that the read out is obstructed making it (at times) almost impossible make a temperature selection.

This temperature gauge also means that there is no need to try and count the number of bleeps to ensure that you have selected the correct setting.

The handle is very comfortable to hold and use. It has a knobbly reduce-slip grip and has a soft-ish feel.

At the top of the handle are the spray and steam buttons. The spray button is on the left and was, at first, a little stiff to press but that reduced (or I got use to it) after a couple of uses.

The steam boost is on the right. Beneath these two buttons is a slider with six steam settings to choose from.

The footplate is smooth with more than double the amount of steam vents than our regular iron.

The iron heats up very quickly, in about a minute it is ready to use.

There is a "drip stop" system to reduce those irritating spots of water appearing on your freshly washed and ironed items.

Included is a safety shut off system within the iron. So if you leave your iron on by mistake it will turn off after several minutes.

The iron is capable of ironing both horizontally and vertically. A great help if you need to iron heavy curtains or something more delicate like a wedding dress.

It is recommended that you "clean" the iron every 2 weeks. This is an easy task. You simply use the "anti-calc" button to de-scale the iron and the give the tank a rinse out. There is no need to use de-scaling or de-calcifying products as the iron comes with everything you need built in.

It isn't the lightest iron available, but it isn't the heaviest iron we have had. It removes creases (even heavy creases) with ease and is easy to handle.

It is not overly complicated - no bells and whistles (or should that be bleeps and tings) - just easy to use and control.

Philips have kept everything simple rather than going for the "individual setting for everything" type and that is what has worked best for us.

All-in-all it is a top class iron that I hope will last us for years.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I had a lightweight, flimsy iron before this one and boy can I tell the difference in quality between the two.

The Philips Azur iron isn't lightweight which is a bonus for me because you can place it down and not worry about it just toppling over at a slight push - which has happened to me with my previous lightweight iron when my arm accidently grazed against it. No, this iron stands firm which I much prefer. I've done a ton of ironing since I've had this because we've had holiday clothes to iron and not a single issue.

PLUS POINTS:

- Medium weight and very sturdy. It will not easily topple over
- The cord is a decent length so I can iron halfway across my kitchen
- The water container is huge compared with the iron I had before so less filling up
- It comes with a decent plastic beaker for adding water
- It irons from sheer fabrics to difficult fabrics like linen with ease
- Very tough on creases with plenty of steam settings that make ironing a doddle
- Easy to operate, no fiddly controls and not hard to understand
- Glides smoothly over clothes

MINUS POINTS:

- I personally don't like the clip cover over the water hole which I find a little fiddly to operate. However, the water storage is huge so I only have to fill it once for a 2 hour ironing session.
- It certainly doesn't feel lightweight but I'm glad of that because I'm not worried it will topple over.

A great iron, really impressed and it has made my ironing sessions shorter because it irons better than my previous iron. I took 1 star off because of the hinged cover over the water filling compartment which is possibly a bit excessive - I would give it 4.5/5 really
