4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, bit fiddly to use 16 Nov 2013

I was on the verge of buying a pair of Sonos 1s when I saw these reduced to less than 300 quid. A quick Google reveals that people have had a lot of trouble with the Air Studio app, but also that it has now been replaced by something called Air Studio + which is much better. So i thought I'd risk it.

The speakers are big, heavy units - much more like old fashioned hifi than the 'ipod dock' look of Sonos. You might find this a bit old fashioned, but I quite like it, and they're built to a high standard, as you'd hope from the top of the Fidelio range. They even come with good quality speaker cable (the two units are wired together, I suppose to eliminate syncing issues).

I have found Air Studio + to be perfectly acceptable. It's not perfect, but setting the unit up using it was painless, it updated firmware ok, and it accesses my NAS happily. It's a bit fiddly - sometimes you feel things should be just a click away and they're several clicks. And the volume control - a touchscreen slider - is a bit small so it isn't smooth to use. This is a powerful system, and it's easy to turn it WAY up. But I gather the Sonos app isn't perfect either.

The sound quality is really excellent. I did have a cursory listen to the Sonos, and while I'm sure they're excellent considering the size, the Philips is just a different beast altogether - smooth and powerful. I've seen people say they beat even the top end Sonos 5, though I don't know anyone who can justify buying a stereo pair of those.

One negative - apparently they don't support Spotify any more. The option is still in the app, but it doesn't work, and according to tech support that's the reason. Maybe it's a licensing issue? It doesn't bother me particularly but I'm sure it's a deal breaker for some.

Super sound and lots of great features. For music only, it is really good. If the App(also the new one) was better, they was worth 5 stars. But I also wanted to use them with my TV, and then the picture is ahead of the sound. This because of a delay, some says 0,5 to 0,8 second. This was on the wired/cabled connections.
I will try the “Raumfeld Speaker M” instead, they say that there are no delay on line in/cabled connections.

I researched wireless music systems quite a bit before deciding to purchase an entire system based on the Fidelio platform, including a pair of AW9000/10 in the living room, a couple of AW5000 units in the dining room and kitchen and an AW2000 receiver feeding a couple of good quality bookshelf units in the office. At full price, this lot would have set me back 1,350 but because of some of the issues when first launched, I actually paid just 600 for the lot! What a bargain, so long as they work....

Out of the box, the all in one units (9000 and 5000) are weighty, well finished and exude quality. The 2000 unit however is a bit lightweight and flimsy with a plastic case and an obvious lack of weight in the power supply department (the unit is rated at 60 watts r.m.s. but read the small print, at 10% THD!). They all look pretty good though and the 5000 units especially are great for putting in the corner of a kitchen or dining room because of their angled cabinet.

Before you connect to the mains or go through any set up, download the app on your chosen device (either Apple IOS via the Apple Store or Android via Google Play Store - I have done bboth and they both download and work fine on both an Aplle I-Phone 4s and an HTC 1S and 1X). Make sure you choose AirStudio + not the earlier and more problem prone AirStudio). Set up and wi-fi connection is easy - they readily grab your wi-fi signal and the set up instructions are simple and accurate. The prominent cabinet led light is a good idea as it tells you exactly what the status of the unit is at a glance.

Once you have connected to your wi-fi, you should see the unit on the list of available devices at the bottom of your screen and you should also see a menu that enables you to select a source (e.g.

5.0 out of 5 stars These things are great 11 Sep 2013
OK before I got these I read the reviews about all the issues and shortcomings of the app etc.

It took me two attempts to get the speakers connected to the Wi-Fi network but if you are ok typing in your Wi-Fi password then you should not have much of an issue. The next thing I did was instantly update the firmware. It did stall and put up an error message but when I pressed the back button once it continued and is all up and running.

As another reviewer suggested try the Philips MyRemote and BubbleUPnP as they both appear to be much easier that the suggested AirStudio app although even that was not as bad as I expected based on reviews.

The sound quality is a surprise. I was hoping it was good based on reviews but I didn't expect such amazing sound and weight from such small speakers' have moved from floorstanders and wasn't expecting much other than convenience but I was really surprised by the base these little speakers produce.

Very happy and really sorry for those who couldn't get them working as they are really very good. If you are undecided then I suggest you get them, try them and return rather than just not get them at all?
