Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Philips FWC399 is a powerful mini system, with three-CD changer, tuner, twin cassette deck and timer/clock. Design-wise, this is a curious beast. The system has predominantly a rather dull gun-metal coloured finish, accented by a silver band across the centre--where most of the controls are--and a yellow bass reflex port on each speaker. However, switch the FWC399 on and an array of multicoloured flashing lights reveal that this is aimed at those who are looking for something bold and brash from their hi-fi.

With 120 Watts per channel RMS the system has plenty of punch. There are a variety of different settings for the audio balance, including variable levels of dynamic bass boost; a Virtual Environment Control for simulating concert hall or cinema style sound; Digital Sound Control, with settings for jazz, techno, rock and optimal; plus an Incredible Surround button, which attempts to simulate a surround sound setup from just two speakers. This range of settings has variable success, but generally the sound quality is reasonable. It delivers power, but at times lacks control and definition. A further control is the Max Sound button, which provides a shot of adrenaline to the whole system. This produces a much richer, fuller sound, though the previous caveats about the sound quality still apply, especially at higher volumes.

The three-CD changer uses the carousel system, which works speedily and quietly, even enabling you to change two CDs while the third is still playing. Other features include 40-track programmability, repeat and shuffle. The tuner receives FM/MW/LW signals and can hold 40 presets. It also supports RDS, which can display radio station name, radio text and programme type. The NEWS function also enables the system to automatically scan and pick up news bulletins, returning to the previous source, such as a CD playing, when the bulletin has finished. The twin cassette decks support one touch and CD synchro recording and tape-to-tape dubbing. The system also includes a clock and timer. --Jason Weston

Product Description

With more power than most mini systems, the Philips FWC399 can blast out a searing performance with maximum bass and volume at the touch of a button. This powerful system with three CD changer and three level Dynamic Bass Boost, can bathe you in sound and give you the illusion of being at the centre of the action with Incredible Surround technology. When activated, this produces a dramatic increase in stereo performance. While the Digital Sound Control (DSC) offers different sound settings optimised for specific musical styles. Examples are JAZZ, POP, and ROCK settings, each specifically tailored to produce optimum listening pleasure from its corresponding style of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great bit of kit!, 26 Jul 2002
After hours of searching for a new mini-system i came across this 2002 model from Philips. Being dressed in black It wasn't particularly eye-catching alongside its silver competitors but its atractive spec list and price meant it qualified for a listen. Much to my delight it sounded superb, the bass is smooth and punchy and even on full (dbb3) it doest 'boom' and lose timing like most other systems of this type. The mid and top end is clear and open and is never eclipsed by the bass boost. It comes loaded with a multitude of great sound modes including one called 'optimal sound' which creates a nice tonal balance.Oh! and i forgot to mention the surround simulator which is pretty impesive and doesn't just create an echo like some surround modes. Overall this system is better than most in my opinion and is well worth considering!

4.0 out of 5 stars PHILIPS FW C399, 22 Jan 2003
I have to agree with the other review here, except that incredible surround isn't as good as mentioned, the difference in sound is not that noticible. Another downside is the remote, it has alot less functionality than other remotes, doesnt have numbers on it for changing cd tracks so you have to go through the lengthy process of skipping till you find that you want. Apart from this though, the system has many features that will be hard to find on any other system for the same price.

I would recommended this for anyone who is on a budget and wants lots of feautures.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A SYSTEM!!!, 1 Feb 2004
By DANCELOVER2004 (ENGLAND - HAMPSHIRE) - See all my reviews
well i gotta say, for the money i paid for my system, i wasnt expecting anything as good as this! considering i mainly listen to hard dance, the bass is extremely punchy, and not in the slightest bit saggy, unlike many of it's competitors. the treble - well its in a league of its own! many systems are unable to handle high pitched treble, an tend to squeal, this, on the other hand can handle some of the highest treble on todays dance scene. 1 fault tho - the bass! its way too good! i often listen to rock/punk music, and we all know that it has very 'uneven' bassline to it. this causes a problem if you keep the speakers near the unit, as the bass often (when on max volume) will skip the cd! anyway - a beast of a system, a bargain of a buy, an some absolutely bangin' bass! cant be beaten on price, quality or anything of the sort you'd expect from a mini system. if u wanna find any better than this, your gonna have to go with a stack system - sorry to tell you! hope this is useful.
