Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Philips is the first company to include a "game" function, making the eXpanium 521 (eXp521) a new and exciting music and game gear. The compact and slim portable MP3 and WMA CD player enhances fun on the go, thanks to an innovative tailor-made chipset featuring five thrilling games built-in. The games include: Snatcher, Muncher, Breaker, Matcher and Copter. Users can enjoy up to 10 hours of their favorite music simultaneously while playing an exciting game -- anytime, anywhere.

Unique and rugged design elements effectively add a gaming feel to the eXp521. A special 3D-textured rim, created by a special knurling process, is featured on the CD door. This allows for users to grip the set tightly while involved in a game. Easy to hold and carry around, the eXp521 flaunts a super slender cross-section of just 21.5mm with the use of a slim CD drive that reduces its height by 20 percent, compared to traditional CD drives.

The eXp521 plays CDs, MP3-CDs and WMA-CDs so users can enjoy various compressed audio format discs. The special software also ensures compatibility on normal CD, CD-R and CD-RW formats.

Full of Hassle 24 May 2004
By mar
I bought Philips Expanium (EXP521) on 8th March 2004 from Amazon,
mainly to listen to MP3 files during travelling to/from work
(London Underground).

Why Philips EXP521?

Main reason because it was cheaper than others and an important feature:
its 'inbuilt charger’.

Is it any Good?

Well, during my two weeks, I established the followings:

(1) It takes unusually long time to load; sometime it never loads so I had
to turn it off and on again
(2) Frequently, buttons do not respond.
(3) Sometime it skips while it is playing a CD.
(4) Cheap quality Batteries runs up after an hour.
(5) It is heavy.

Even with these disadvantages, I decided to keep it as I did not want to go
through the hassle (and cost) of posting to Amazon, etc.

Now, it has stopped working?

Last Friday, 21st May 2004, it refused to play a CD (few CD tracks), which it
played during the morning. It displayed the following message:

'Pls insert CD or No Audio File'
and after this message it tells me to 'Press GAME to play'

When it played on the morning, it was not perfect - it stopped and plays. I
thought it was the CDR. So, I went home, recharged it and tried several
CDs, some MP3 and some normal CDs, especially the one
that it played for
two months, I get same error message.

It is still under warranty and since I have to go through posting the damn
thing, I HOPE AMAZON gives me another manufacturer’s MP3 player as a
replacement. It will cost me another £5-10 to post it to them.

Final Comments

If you want a player to play simple MP3/CD buy something else, NOT THIS ONE.

If you want wait for it to load a CD for ages/turn it on & off to make a CD work,
skip while it is playing, carry a heavy item, and the associated hassle
of posting to Amazon because it failed, then buy this.

Very bad Experience!

This is a bargain price for this unit. I bought one last summer and still believe it to be worth the money.

The supplied headphones are reasonable, and the battery life is excellent. You are even supplied with a power adaptor and rechargable batteries.

MP3's are found quickly and are crisp and clear on playback. It has read a mixture of encode rates including VBR with no problems.

Now the negatives: Normal CD playback is awful! Normal CD's sound muffled and often distort for no apparent reason.

Forget about the 'shuffle' feature with MP3's too. It's a nice idea to let it rip around the ten or so albums and play a mixture, but unfortunatley it locks up if it has to jump from say the 1st folder to the last (or anywhere past 5th or 6th).

If you want a no frills, good sounding MP3 player you could do a lot worse, but this one does have a few quirks...

I just recently bought this player and it's my first Portable CD-MP3 Player and my review is based on this experience level.

- The look is cool and impressive
- Comes with Mains Adapter and 2 rechargable Philips AAA (HR11/45) 1.2V 700 mA Batteries
- These batteries can be mounted on the battery cover
- Alternatively AA batteries can be used with a different battery cover (supplied)
- The rechargable batteries are automatically charged when the CD Player is off and the Mains adapter is connected.
- The Games are really very primitive and slow
- There are 3 buttons on the CD Player : Vol+ Vol- and DBB
- The DBB provides 2 different Bass Levels which is very good
- The Volume Level is maximum 30. Unfortunately this is not loud enough. It maybe indoors but if you're outside and you really want to hear the music loud, this is not the player for you.
- The sound quality is very good.
- The LCD Display size is just about the right size, not too large and not too small. Scrolls the Title during play.
- For MP3 CD's : Directories on the CD are represented as Albums and numbered (2 digits) so you can't see the name of the directory. The songs within the directories are numbered as tracks (3 digits). ID tags are displayed.
- The headphones length is small but can be connected to the small controller unit (supplied) which can be attached to your shirt pocket or anywhere else. You can pause/start the song/CD Player , select next song, previous song, Stop the CD Player/Song, Increase/decrease Volume and Hold settings.
This small controller interface must be connected to the CD Player obviously.
- On the back side of the player there are 2 switches, ESP switch on/off and for Holding, Resuming the settings.
- The manual comes in a PDF Format on a CD with Musicbox Software

Overall this is a good CD-MP3 Player, except the Volume problem.
That's the reason for one less star.
