Manufacturer's Description

The Voice Tracer digital recorder is ideal for capturing conversations - the audio quality is outstanding even in loud environments. On top of that, it also lets you charge your device via USB anywhere you want.

Low-noise microphone

The signal–to-noise (S/N) ratio of the high-sensitivity microphone is far better than those of standard microphones. Recording sensitivity is increased (picks up more voice signal) without compromising sound quality.

ClearVoice

Recording with good audio quality at lectures or presentations can be a challenge. Especially if you do not sit in the front row, the voice of the speaker may be to quiet too record in acceptable quality. The ClearVoice feature adjusts quiet passages dynamically, thus improving the intelligibility of quieter voices.

Record in MP3 or PCM

Recordings can be taken in the popular MP3 or the high-quality PCM format. The PCM format offers outstanding audio CD-like recording quality and therefore makes listening to your audio files a pleasure.

For the last several years I have still been using a Sony Dictation machine which still used micro cassettes!
In recent times I have been looking at a replacement with the ability to easily transfer recordings to your computer and this one fits the bill.
The unit has a built in microphone as well one on a cord (about 1 metre long with spring clip fixed to microphone).

The unit also of course has a built in speaker to permit playback and along with this comes a basic stereo headphone set (unit cannot make a stereo recording but can playback stereo mp3 files copied onto its internal memory via USB).

The quick setup guide is very poor and is all made out of symbols so the same one can be used for any country / language.

However, a full manual is stored on the local flash memory of the unit or it can be downloaded from Philips website.

You may wish to download the manual first before purchase to make sure the product meets your needs.

[...]

The unit is powered by 1 x AAA rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride battery/cell and you should note a standard rechargeable will not charge in the unit unless the plastic coating is removed from the lower third to permit a third charging connection in the dictator.

No charger is provided for the dictator and the idea being that it charges when hooked up to your computer with the provided short USB cable (20cm long).

My needs for any sort of dictaphone/recorder are pretty basic - I need something that records clearly at meetings and doesn't get awash with ambient noise or the sound of it's own operation. Light weight, decent battery life, easy to use and if it looks a bit flash all that's all to the good.

After trying a few recorders over the years, my favoured way of recording has been an Android app on my phone, but this recorder does take me into a new league. It ticks all the boxes and following its performance at a handful of meetings it looks set to become a 'must have' in my bag.

On the downside, I found the operating instructions to be awful and not intuitive at all (surprising from Philips). I only use the device at its most basic and wouldn't know how to get more from it. I also think it's overpriced, perhaps if I used more functions I'd change my mind, but at the moment I feel the price is double it's value.

An easy to use, computer freindly, dictaphone type unit. As an owner of an Olympus unit before, I found the sound quality good, but not quite as good as I remember my Olympus, despite it being several years older. However, its likely that my Olympus, if it were still around, might not work with Vista or 7, which the Philips most certainly does, plus the fact that as it appears simply as a mass storage device, means the OS shouldnt really matter.

I think that the 'stereo' recording is a bit of a gimmick really, not much more than a diversive microphone, although again this doesn't seem to result in better sound quality. However, the memory at 2GB, equating to more hours than you could care to record, is a great advantage over the 60 or so MB in my last model!

My husband the gadget king needs anything remotely useful. He spends his life in meetings, typing up notes for his own records and has been looking for something to replace his philips recorder from fifteen years ago as his tapes are now extemely tired and working below par.

This gadget offers him a remarkable piece of technology he can tape meetings, he can make notes, record reminders. If hes in a extra long meeting, and he has lots of those, it allows him to search through the recordings in half hour segments so that he can find that exact bit he needs.

All in all it is remarkable how far these things have come in such a short time.

If you are expecting to use from the box, it maybe a case of think again. The gadget arrives with a quick start leaflet with pictures a plenty and mind twisting instructions. It may as well be written in another language for all the good it does you at first.

After a little messing though he was up and running and is totally thrilled to be the proud owner of this device.

I gave this four stars out of five not because the device has any problems at all if its what you need it is absolutely brilliant, that star I dropped for the poor startup instructions there really is no need to make life that complicated is there, it made flat pack diy instructions look good!

For anyone that lives in a world where they have meetings a plenty, need to record thoughts or information for a later date then this little tool is a gem of a purchase.

I have never known a product to come with the most stupid and ridiculous set of instructions in my life.

The device itself is lightweight, it feels a bit flimsy but is ergonomic and comfortable in the hand.

The USB lead is the shortest I have ever seen, about 7 inches in length, it doesn't even reach from my USB port on my pc to the top where it could rest. It has to hang down looking untidy and amateurish - I know various PC's have USB ports in various places but I feel my computer is quite standard

Now we come to the main job. I am in the process of changing job and this would have been great for me, but it is almost impossible to fathom out how to use it.
At its most basic level, I was able to record my voice and delete it. But for the cost involved I could have done it a lot cheaper and I didn't feel the quality of the recording was worth the cost involved either.

This is supposed to come with many other features but after 4 days I have given up trying to work them out. I am quite gadget mad, and I don't consider myself to be easily fazed but these instructions (and I seriously use that term with reservation) are an insult.
It is some kind of colour coded pictorial menu, but to me it made no sense.
I like Philips a lot, and have many of their products but have never been so baffled and annoyed.

Maybe 2 stars is a low rating, but at the end of the day if I can't work out how to use it then it isn't useful to me.

Very disappointed.
