Especially if you do not sit in the front row, the voice of the speaker may be to quiet too record in acceptable quality. The ClearVoice feature adjusts quiet passages dynamically, thus improving the intelligibility of quieter voices.

This Digital Voice Recorder is small, very light and practical.

The buttons are well laid out for easy use, although some are a little too small, for my fingers.

It is easy to use as a handheld recorder, but will take an external microphone if you want to record lectures or meetings (but with the other participants' consent).

The battery life seems to be very long.

You can record at very high quality, but, if you intend to record several hundred hours of speech, you can alter the quality through an easy to use menu system.

There's an option to make it record only when there's enough sound, so omitting long pauses while you think.

I wish I'd had one when I was learning Japanese.

This Philips model is a surprisingly good voice recorder for this amount of money. It's quite a small device of about the same size as a mobile phone but lighter in weight, and its recordings provide exceptionally clear voices even in noisy environments. Listening back I even heard things that I'd missed when the event was `live'.

It has different quality settings depending on whether your priority is a better quality of recording or a greater number/length of recordings, with almost 23.5 hours of recording time on the highest setting. If you do choose the setting for maximum recording time then you can save up to 566 hours according to Philips. It also records in MP3 format which means that you can transfer them to a computer and use them without the need for new software. There is also the choice of creating recordings in one of four different folders so that you can keep them separate - for example recording lectures in one folder, meetings in another etc.

The supplied combined earpiece and external microphone is useful where the main voice recorder needs to be in a pocket for example, but I found that the quality of recording is not quite as good as with the internal microphone but it is still sometimes useful to have the facility especially since it has a clip for attaching to clothes etc.

Although the recorder is fairly intuitive to use the instructions supplied should have been a bit more informative than they are, but they rely on pictures to convey the information rather than language so some of the facilities aren't explained properly. Having said that it is still really easy to use and anyone who uses a modern mobile phone would have no difficulty with one. Overall I've been very impressed by it and can recommend it wholeheartedly.

This is what I have been looking for, for ages! It is perfect, high quality playback, feather-light and captures even the faintest of voices. I've been looking for a pocket microphone to have an easy way of recording my music being a drummer and it handles the deafening drums with perfect playback and even captures the quiet discussions made when song-writing that would usually go unheard which is great to have on record!

I've pretty much worked out how to use this without the instructions as the only downfall is actually their universal picture 'Quick Start' instruction page which doesn't explain the menu functions - only uses diagrams of the icons with no text, so admitedly i'm still unsure of a lot of the settings so have left it as factory default which is working well for me - but I have only had this recorder for a matter of hours so I'm tempted to ask in depth to the help team to make sure i'm getting the most out of this great gadget.

It's nice and small, pocket sized, nice and light, basically quite easy to use, as mentioned i've had it up and running with no instructions and it is simple to transfer data to your computer too, It comes with a USB cable and really is a matter of simply copying and pasting the files which are already MP3 format which is perfect as no file format changing needed to add to mobile devices etc.

Also comes with an AAA battery and headphones, also has a socket should you wish to attach an external mic if you prefer, but the mic included within the recorder is really perfect.

Fantastic item, fantastic price, handles sound of all levels and simple to use, small, light, couldn't recommend mopre, another quality Philips product!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
As a student I used a C-90 tape dictation machine (Sony TCM150.CE7 Compact Tape Recorder Silver). I found that it was better to do that than rely on my note taking over a 2 or 3 hour lecture. No matter how good you are at note taking or how closely you pay attention you will always miss something important over that length of time.

Even the smallest of these machines were chucky and heavy, and at least 2 tapes were required per lecture (a single days attendance would require at least 8 tapes) and then there would be the spare sets of AA batteries to carry as well. All of which made my bag extremely heavy even before I had put the text books, note pads and pens in it.

Adding up the cost of the tapes alone reveals a frightening amount of money - TDK D90 blank AUDIO tapes - Pack 10.

The machines always managed to make an inexplicably loud clunk when they reached the end of a side. Having managed to attract the attention of the entire arena I would then have to turn the tape over manually which was not a quiet action in itself. Even the reversible recorders would make a groaning/squeaking noise before the excruciating clunk which would echo around the lecture theatre, and the tapes would have to be changed at the end of the second side.

I wish I'd had this machine when I was at college and university, it would certainly have saved me a lot of money, embarrassment and backache.

The machine has 566 hours recording in SLP mode.
