This DVD player is very similar in looks, specification and even the menus to the cheaper Toshiba SD-350E. However where the Toshiba often fails to perform well with High Definition upscaling DVD output via the HDMI port, the Philips excels.
Picture quality is superb via both upscaling HDMI and component output. Upgrade to the latest Philips provided firmware to get full 5.1 digital sound output working via the coaxial digital socket and the sound quality via a 5.1 A/V receiver is also superb. The setup menus, whilst basic, provide you with all the settings you need to adjust. It's disk compatibility is good, I've not come across a single problem disk yet and it's had a lot of use. It'll play standard Divx files and mp3 music also.
The only real criticism I could give it is the cheap looking remote, which when compared to some of the other manufacturers offerings looks very poor indeed.
So if you're looking for a not too expensive upscaling DVD player to take advantage of your shiny new HD ready TV then the Philips is well worth a look for the money. You'd have to pay 3 or 4 times the price to get anything better at the moment.

I purchased this machine after returning 3 Toshiba HDMI players over a period of 3 weeks to Richer Sounds that refused to work with the HDMI connection. I even called out the Samsung engineer to check the set. In desperation I purchased the Philips player from Argos to try out and it worked immediately using a £25 HDMI cable (from Argos ) and a £3 cable from Ebuyer. The HDMI picture is very sharp and highly recommended.
