If you don't have an HDMI TV, be aware there's no SCART output on this DVD player. There's a SCART adapter, but you'll get poor quality out of it. I want SCART now and HDMI for when I get a new TV, so I'm buying the old DVP3580.

Philips' model numbers had me scratching my head, so I made a chart (all models do PAL, Divx):

New models, tapered look:

_______ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
DVP3880 y y y _ y _ y y £50 no SCART, RCA to SCART adapter (poor quality, worse than SCART)
DVP3850 _ y y y _ _ _ y £74 no HDMI
DVP3800 _ _ y y _ _ _ _ £47 no HDMI or USB

Old models, rectangular look:

_______ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
DVP3580 y y _ y y y _ _ £54 no NTSC output, old models don't have picture enhancement
DVP3520 _ y y y _ y _ _ £37 no HDMI
DVP3111 _ _ y y _ _ _ _ £33 no HDMI or USB, no digital display on player

Key:

1 HDMI (HD)
2 USB
3 NTSC
4 SCART
5 Divx ultra
6 Green power
7 Cine+
8 pro-read

Note on model numbers:

DVPxxxx/05 = English menus
DVPxxxx/12 = English menus + other language menus

Good player 13 Oct 2011
By I. Ward
To start, let me say I did not buy this from Amazon.

I bought this player as I wanted one that played both DVDs and Video CDs (this plays both and DivX files as a bonus), with HD upscaling, and which I could also unlock to be multi-region/region-free to play region 1 DVDs (the hack is easy to find on Google and the machine is easy to unlock). I can't fault it on these points. I'm no expert on picture quality, nor a sound buff, but the picture and sound seem fine to me.

Also worth saying is this DVD player is quite small and slim, they seem to have packed alot into a small package.

As others have said, there is no SCART socket directly on the device, just the normal component video sockets and an HDMI socket. This is fine for me, as I had an unused HDMI socket on my TV, but something to bear in mind.
There is an adaptor in the box which seems to be meant for converting the component video sockets to a SCART cable, but I didn't try this and can't comment on its effectiveness or effect on picture quality.

(As an aside, don't bother buying an expensive HDMI cable - despite what any salesman may tell you, an expensive 80 quid HDMI cable will give no better picture than a cheap one for a fiver. People smarter than me on these things have tested and compared and found no difference.)

The remote and on-screen interface seems to be be somewhat "minimal", intentionally so as far as I can tell. I've rarely seen a remote with less buttons on it - though all the features I'd expect are there if you look hard enough. Be aware though that the remote has no number keys on it, making going to a specifically numbered chapter point on a DVD not as easy as it might be. Having said this, I can count on one hand the times I've done this by the number keys on a "regular" DVD remote, so I consider this only a minor niggle - YMMV.

Overall a great DVD player.

I bought this DVD player as a previous Samsung Blu-ray player I purchased(now sent back and money refunded) was useless playing my DVD's without juddering all the time.
This DVD player is very good with DVD's, even the "home made" type made via Nero.

The picture is excellent with decent upscaling. Sound is good too.

I should have got this in the first place before I got the Samsung.

Many Blu-ray players seem to have great difficulty playing DVD's properly, particularly ones that you have made yourself. The Philips DVD player hits the spot nicely.

The only gripe I have is with the tiny remote control(Hence four stars not five). It works well enough but it is very "fat finger" syndrome prone.
