I needed a multi-region player to be able to use the DVDs I bought whilst living in N America.
I connected the player to my TV using a SCART lead (not provided).
The user manual explains how to set the player output to:
PAL - to connect it to a UK TV;
NTSC - to connect to a N American TV (but see limitation); or
Both - if your TV can handle either format.
Amazon's online multi-region guide shows you how to use the remote control to get into a hidden option which allows the player to be set to any region. 'Region 0' is best because this ignores region coding on the discs. You should only have to do this setup once. It took a few minutes to get the right audio settings but was worth the effort to get dolby pro-logic surround sound up and running (obviously a compatible telly or sound system is needed).
That's it! Put a DVD in the tray and enjoy.
There may be a slight risk that heavily protected discs will not work but I expect that even these would run by setting to the same region displayed on the disc. I have already successfully tried: Finding Nemo, Prisoner of Azkaban, Lord of The Rings Return of The King, Die Another Day and Spongebob Squarepants!
Limitation. The player will be less effective when connected to a NTSC TV. The Philips manual warns that it will change only VCDs from PAL to NTSC; ie, I don't think I could have used it to play my UK DVDs when I was in Canada.
Like I said, it works and it's easy.
