Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Now you can make your own DVDs, which will play on most DVD Players.

8 hours recording

The 8-hour record mode available on specific DVD recorder models lets you record up to eight hours of video on one single-sided DVD+RW/+R disc.

2-Channel Dolby Digital Recording

Dolby Digital is an advanced digital audio encoding technology that is used on all DVD-Video discs. Philips DVD Recorders store audio in the same format, so it is fully compatible with any DVD player. The quality surpasses that of analog video recorder.

Two-Way Compatibility

DVD Recorders can play regular DVD-Video discs, but equally important is that DVD+R and DVD+RW discs recorded on them can be played on existing DVD-Video players.

Index Picture Screen

The Index Picture Screen is a DVD menu created on every DVD+RW/+R disc that is also accessible on regular DVD players. It gives you an instant overview and easy access, so you can directly see what's on the disc, navigate to the recording you want to see and start playing or record over it.

MP3-CD Playback

MP3 stands for MPEG 1 Audio layer-3. MP3 is a revolutionary compression technology by which large digital music files can be made up to 10 times smaller without radically degrading their audio quality. MP3 has become the standard audio compression format used on the world wide web, allowing quick and easy audio file transfer.

This is GOOD! 3 Jan 2005
    By A Customer
I really woudn't pay much attention to these negative reviews, i bought it for christmas and have nothing bad to say about it, really easy to set up, perfect quality, worth downloading the update from philips. It also doesn't come with mulitregion so simply:

1: Turn on the 610 from the front panel, Do NOT open the disc tray
2: On the 610 Remote, press the blue button, then play then 159, then 121212005255, then play then standby.
    3: Enjoy multiregion viewing!

Please note, the buttons must be pressed quickly or the hack will not work.
You should see the numbers 121212005255 on the front panel display briefly if the hack has been input correctly.

Seriously, I would recommend this DVD recorder, does all formats, playing dvds the quality is second to none, and the price is a lot better than most other good brand names.

Best Value for Price 25 Feb 2005
    By Agent Smith VINE™ VOICE
I too have tried the LiteON 5005 and 5006.
I too returned them both because of the faults they have and decided to try out a Philips DVDR610. I am glad I did.
    This unit is excellent.
The picture quality is superb. Even the 6 & 8hr modes give results comparable to VHS tape.
The unit is whisper quiet. Plays all the discs I can throw at it and looks like a quality piece of kit.
It can be made Region Free easily.
The drawbacks are: No DV input (the DVDR615 has it) & slightly fiddly remote/menu system although it makes sense after a while.
The clock problem has been fixed. It was a faulty batch.
Buy with confidence. I've just sold my S-VHS deck, Time Base Corrector and Capture card i'm so impressed with the quality of this product. (meaning i know a poor picture from a good one!) Tapes capture to disc easily and perfectly.
At this price point you will be hard pressed to find a rival.
Lost a star for the fiddly remote only.

Good value for money 11 Mar 2005
    By A Customer
See my previous review for the Goodmans DVDR301R at around £149. Took the Goodmans back and replaced it with this slightly dearer Philips instead.
Be sure to download and upgrade the latest software from Philips website before commencing too far with the inital installation of this machine. Ignore all the negative reviews about remote controls not working. I initially thought that mine had gone duff too, replacing batteries etc.. did nothing. Moral of the story is - just don't go pressing buttons until you've read the instructions thoroughly, pressing "TV" renders the remote useless until you press "DVD".
Excellent machine, great pictures, whisper quiet, robust and technically superior to the Goodmans. Glad I bought this one.
Handbook a bit naff though. Any troubles with this DVDR are most likely down to the user and not the machine. Recordable DVD machines are not necessarily as easy to install and setup as the old faithful VCR, and so some people may get confused when connecting to TV or SKY box. Just follow the instructions and diagrams carefully and all should be well.
