Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Dual Media records on DVD+R/RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-R/RW

Philips DVD Recorders support dual media recording - the ability to create recordings on DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R DL discs. Now you can buy any disc and the Philips recorder will always create fully compatible recordings, which can be played by any DVD player.

Plays DivX, MP3, WMA and JPEG digital camera photos

Multi-format playability allows you to play most file formats for maximum listening and viewing pleasure, including MP3, WMA, JPEG and the popular DivX digital media format. DivX playback enables you to play and share compressed high quality DivX video content beyond your computer.

DivX Ultra Certified for enhanced playback of DivX videos

DivX Ultra combines DivX playback with great features like integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format.

Guide Plus+ electronic on-screen TV guide

GUIDE Plus+ is an Electronic Program Guide a free on-screen TV Guide that shows whats on TV for the next couple of days and lets you program the timer of the DVD Recorder with the push of a button.

HDD Media Jukebox lets you store movies, music and photos

Philips Hard Disk/DVD Recorders offer the ultimate simplicity in enjoying your digital content right in the living room. Via its USB connection, media files such as MP3, WMA, JPEG and DivX can be transferred directly from USB thumb-drive onto it's integrated Hard Disk. Once the digital media is stored, the content can be organised in a very easy way and played back on any TV or home theatre system.

Easy file transfer between HDD, DVD and USB 2.0 flash drives

Thanks to the complete file transferability, you can transfer or copy your multimedia files from one source to another regardless if the files are stored in the recorder HDD, a DVD disk, or on your USB flash drive.

One Touch Pause Live TV freezes the action instantly

Pause Live TV puts you in absolute control. Once the recorder is turned on, a large built-in memory automatically starts recording the program you are watching -- allowing you to pause, replay or save the program, anytime. If you need to take a break, you can pause your 'live' TV program with just one touch of a button, and resume watching when it suits you.

Instant Replay for reliving a live TV moment with one touch

With Instant Replay you are in control of exciting TV moments so you can enjoy a precious TV moment like a scene in a movie or football match again ? immediately, at the press of a button. The Hard Disk can play back any scene while continuing to record TV program.

FlexTime to watch the beginning while you record the end

With FlexTime you can watch a program while its still being recorded, thanks to the extreme speed of a Hard Disk. You can also watch a different program from the Hard Disk while its recording something else.

High-speed archiving from Hard Disk to DVD

High speed archiving lets you make a copy of a recording from Hard Disk to DVD in a fraction of the original recording time. Once the program is stored on HDD you can copy it to DVD+R/RW at maximum speed.

Progressive Scan component video for optimised image quality

Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Philips DVDR3570H/05 28 Dec 2007
I purchased the Philips DVD HDD recorder to perform the following functions:

1. Archive my VHS tapes to DVD
2. Make it easier to get footage from my mini DV camcorder to DVD
3. Record programmes to HDD to watch later
4. Use my USB key to watch divx movies
5. Use the EPG to record programmes that I would otherwise miss - enabling me to watch TV when I want to!

It is point number 5 that was the most crucial for me. A device similar to SKYplus but with the added benefit of DVD recording and DIVX support seemed too good to be true.

Sad to say then that their is no mention of the EPG function in the user manual or indeed the cover of the box. Every retailer including Currys and Amazon have listed the EPG function as one of the key features of this recorder. Having upgraded the firmware and tried all the buttons with no success I have now sent an email to Philips asking them to clarify the matter.

The other functions perform as they should although I've not tried all of them yet - The interface is friendly albeit a little slow. The device looks stunning. It's remarkable being able to pause and rewind Live TV. Their is no fan noise (or none that I can hear) and the unit hasn't yet crashed!.

Unfortunately though I think I will be returning this because it is lacking the EPG (something which was a major consideration for me when I made the purchase).

I will provide details of the answer from Philips when I receive their email!

Let's face it, VHS is dead, so I needed a DVD recorder so I can record programmes off the TV etc; we're all in that situation now aren't we? There are so many DVD recorders available on the market now I started to wondered what else I wanted from a DVD recorder.

I choose the Philips 3570 because it has so much going for it:

The positives:
- it can play DivX movies,
- it can record on nearly any blank DVD (all except DVD-RAM)
- it has a built-in USB port and IEEE1394/Firewire port (4pin)
- it has DV composite-in
- you can do minor video editing
- it has VideoPlus Timer
- internal hard disk (various sizes depending on model)
- you can transfer files from HDD to USB or DVD etc

Once the recorder was installed with my TV and Freeview, I was very happy, but then I started to notice the little things.

The negatives:
- it ain't multiregional (this is stated, so my fault)
- the interface is very slow
- the remote takes some time to get use to
- the whole unit crashes once in while for no reason whatsoever
- it takes about a minute to boot up, so there is no instant recording
- the depth of the unit is large, so make sure you have shelf space

Even with the minor problems, the unit is very good and I am very happy with it. Philips could do a lot more with this unit, add Freeview, add HDMI, better interface, but all in all, this unit should cater for all your needs, especially if you acquire DivX movies off the Internet.

excellent all rounder 17 Feb 2008
I previously had a liteon dvd recorder but the timer packed up so started searching for a replacement with more features. decided after reading loads and loads of reviews of various makes and models to go for this phillips unit. I certainly made the right decision, what a fabulous piece of kit. Very versatile, plays divx seemlessly from hdd, usb or dvd and you can transfer the file between any of the formats.picture quality is excellent, set up and use very easy, not crashed at all as mentioned in prevoius review and the response from the remote seems very normal not slow at all. money well spent and you would be hard pressed to find a better unit for the price.
