Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

With Philips DVDR3305/05 DVD Recorder, recording is made even easier! You can now record your favourite TV programmes in perfect digital quality.

With 'VPS' (Video Programming System) and 'PDC' (Program Delivery Control), the TV station controls the beginning and the length of the programmed recording. This means that your recording device switches itself on and off at the right time even if a TV program you have programmed begins earlier or finishes later than expected.

With the VIDEO Plus+ system, all you need to do to program your video recorder is to enter the 'Pluscode' a single code of up to nine digits (but usually less) that is printed next to each TV program in most TV guides.

Multi format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure. Make sharing photos with family and friends more fun! Run a photo slideshow with music playing in the background. This Philips product supports simultaneous playback of JPEG pictures and MP3 music. Make sure the files for the musical slideshow are stored in the same media. Select your favourite MP3 music and start a slideshow of JPEG pictures.

The 6-hour record mode available on specific DVD recorder models lets you record up to six hours of video on one single-sided DVD+RW/+R and DVD-R/RW disc. Philips DVD Recorders support 'dual media' recording, which is the ability to create recordings on + and - discs (DVD+R/+RW/-R/-RW). The consumer can buy any disc and the recorder will always create fully compatible recordings with any other DVD player.

    Don't buy it!! 9 Sep 2006
I got one of these about a year ago. The first problem I found was, when using -RW discs, it records in VR mode rather than Video mode, rendering the discs unplayable in 99% of other DVD players. I had to go through a lengthy conversion process on my pc to make Video discs from the VR discs. (The manual doesnt make this clear at all).

Ok, so I decided to put up with that. Next thing, it locked up whilst in standby, meaning a scheduled recording was missed. Well done Philips.

And finally, it refused to play any discs I had made using Ulead Video studio, and other burning programs on my PC, recgonising them only as blanks. Money back, brought a Sony RDRGX210, which has none of the problems listed above.

Not to mention the remote, which isnt great compared to other models, and the interface is drab. I will however credit recordings from this model with very good picture quality.

Read The Manual! 2 Mar 2006
    By Mike
I have just purchased the DVDR3305/05 & cannot understand peoples issues with picture & sound quality or ease of recording. Having taken the time to read the manual first I spent 5 minutes connecting all relevant cables etc (including moving furniture to get to the back of the TV) & found no problems at all with quality of sound or picture.

Admittedly here are some features missing such as f/fwd to speed through adverts but by adding a chapter indicator at the end of the adverts you can simply skip them when they start anyway.

At £120 I find this machine hard to fault.

I didn't buy this product from Amazon but took it off my father's hands as he couldn't get the hang of it (he is 85 years old so I gave him a Humax PVR9200T hard disc recorder which he loves and finds significantly easier to use).

This has to be one of the worst home entertainment products that I have ever owned. It's slow. It's quite noisy in operation (very clunky). The menues are clumsy. The remote control is fiddly. Worst of all is it's ability to 'hang' when editing recordings made on dvd-rw discs. I have applied software/firmware upgrades as and when they have become available and whilst these have resolved some minor issues the problem with the machine hanging with dvd-rw discs remains (even on playback at times).

I expected better from a company the size of Philips and my experience with this recorder means that I am unlikely to consider buying any of their other products.

Update June 2008: The original unit 'died' and refused to eject a pre-recorded dvd. As the unit was still under warranty it was returned to the manufacturer and was deemed 'beyond repair' so I was sent a replacement unit. Strangely enough a piece of paper included with the replacement unit instructed me to set the replacement unit to 'Ireland' and not 'UK'. Very strange.
