Apalling Box. 3 Jun 2010
This box is dreadful. The reproduction of the signal digital signal is pretty good but unfortunately the software needs an update as it freezes a lot and is slow to respond to commands from the controller. Also, it cannot keep up with quick flicking between channels and I have had to take the power out and put it back in multiple times because it just cannot cope with the demands of the user.

It looks great, the espn card slot works well, and records very well but when it it does record programs, it does not list the program you have recorded rather just the channel and the date you recorded. This means you have to select it using the already painfully slow controller to see what it is that you recorded.

The menus do not look good and are in grim colours also. The remote is too large, heavy and bulky.

The major fault is having two red buttons. One to record and another one to make selections in menus. They often perform the same function and seems like a bad design fault. The 8 day tv guide is also slow and often it will not let you record things in the future and seems to be a bit hit and miss. I'm sure there are better ones out there.

Generally I have been impressed with Philips products but this one was disssapointing. No dount they will rectify these problems and produce something that has the quality and functionality to go with the looks.

I bought this box to use in my study for recording motorsports etc. I have always held quite a high regard for Philips products in the past, but this is not up to the usual standard. I have three main complaints about it.

1. it is unacceptably noisy. Most of these machines make their share of noise but this is the worst I've come across. Forget having one in your bedromm....it will wake you up if you set it to record during the night!
2. the EPG is poor. You have to press a second button to get the eight days and then it is frustratingly slow to gather the information.
3. forget trying to fast wind through a recording, it's pathetic.

I've got an aging Panasonic PVR that would knock spots off this machine in every respect apart from the fact that it doesn't have the facility to automatically record a series.

Philips DTR 16 Jun 2010
Great product, slightly slow to respond to the remote bt it is worth it because the menus are easy to navigate. It has single button record and series link.
Glad I got it in time for the World Cup.
