5.0 out of 5 stars Freeview Never Looked Better 19 July 2010
By Captain Awesome TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
I've enjoyed Freeview for many years now and have always wanted it in high definition.
Finally, I've a box that handles it well. I tried the Humax Freeview HD box and it was just a bad experience.
This box, however, is far more impressive.

It was a breeze to set up, with it auto-scanning for channels and matching my television's resolution.
As well as that, the picture quality is outstanding, the remote pretty well designed and the programme guide the best I've ever seen.

All-in-all, I'd consider this a must-buy item for anyone who has a high definition television and prefers Freeview over Virgin or Sky.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall Very good 26 May 2011
By Jai
I have had this for 2 weeks now and i am overall very pleased with it. Very quick to set up, the HDMI input is great and i have been able to pick up the Freeview HD channels via my indoor aerial. The main thing i like about this box is that i have been able to create my own favorites list meaning i don't have to shift through useless TV channels. The reason i have only given it 4 stars is because it has crashed once and i had to turn it off and on again via the switch. This does have a record to external DVD or VCR function but i have not used it so cannot comment on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a very good receiver 23 Jun 2010
By P. Holt
I bought this item recently and have been very impressed with it. Once you overcome a couple of technical difficulties the set performs very well. Firstly it requires a software update before you are able to use it and the download is annoyingly slow. The problem being when you try and select a channel to watch from the program guide well it won't let you but the update fixes that bug. Secondly there was a conflict between the set, my Sony DVD player and my Sony Bravia television using the HDMI cable. The DVD player wouldn't function correctly but this is overcome by turning the controls for HDMI off on both the TV and the DVD player.

Once these problems are overcome the picture is superb on both the standard Freeview channels and the high definition channels. The set is easy to use, the guide uncomplicated and the remote nicely laid out. Sound is a little quiet on the HD channels but I understand that's normal. Overall I would recommend this set to anyone wishing to upgrade to High Definition.... 4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Freeview the way it should always have been! 21 Oct 2010
By M. Hoy VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Brilliant product. I don't know if it's just because Freeview boxes have come on a long way since I last bought one about 4 years ago, but this doesn't have any of the laggy interface or hard to use TV guides that I've learnt to associate freeview with.

Quick, snappy operation. Looks professional and modern.

Only real problems are there aren't an awful lot of HD channels available on Freeview at the moment (more are coming, apparently everything will be HD soon, but who knows when that will be) and it's quite pricey compared to some competitors! (Although I bet those boxes are slower and nowhere near as aesthetically pleasing as this one)

Good buy. Put your 'HD Ready' TV to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars NEW LEVEL OF PICTURE QUALITY with ease 23 July 2010
The picture and sound quality produced by this small box brings a new experience to your TV. Watching the world cup and Wimbledon tennis was a revelation. The unit was very easy to set up, if I can do it anyone can, and my grandchildren agreed. There are two buts, 1, This product only reaches its potential with TV screens of 32" or more. The bigger the screen the better the picture quality advantage, mine is 32" and thats great. 2, Changing from HD channels [50 & 51] to normal channels can be a faff as the sound levels can be different until you get used to it, and using two controller sets can be confusing. Having said that it does not put me off from happily viewing and enjoying genuine HD TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, robust, HD box 16 Sep 2010
By Mr. Christopher Lancaster VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
There's a wide variety of HD Freeview boxes on the market, and I expected a great deal from this one as Philips have a longstanding high reputation when it comes to televisions and associated products.

Fortunately, I wasn't disappointed. The box looks nice, and is easy to setup, and the picture quality is very good both for HD and non-HD programmes. Boxes with good pictures often have poor or hard-to-use controls and on-screen menus, etc, but these are good and easy to navigate.

A very good HD box, as one would hope for from Philips, and highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant hd, poor sd! 30 Oct 2011
By A. Bray
I bought this for £50 from Amazon (its now over £100) and am pleased with it. I previously bought the grundig and sharp hd receivers but both kept crashing and the grundig kept skipping on the hd channels. Both were sent back.

The Philips thankfully is very stable and the hd picture quality is excellent (dependent on source material). The reason for four stars is the grainy picture on the standard def channels which are poor compared to the tv tuner and bt vision box I also have.

Thanks to a firmware update downloaded on to usb stick from the philips website and then put into the unit, the Philips box can decode proper dolby digital surround sound which is broadcast on certain programmes. (This has to be connected to surround amp).

I would recommend this but not for more than £50.
