I have a longstanding aversion to all manner of specialised speaker docks for iPods and iPhones which I think are far too expensive compared to the terrific sound you can get hooked up to a much cheaper set of external computer speakers such as JBL Duet White Mac/Win

While I think this is still quite an expensive gadget, I am beginning to be convinced it does give value for money, as it does have a lot of functionality going for it.

It has a neat, simple design and will take a huge range of iPods, iPhones and iPads - some of them fairly old-skool. The connection has a spring loaded pivot which braces your device against a back support - so there is nice secure docking regardless of size and whether or not your device is in a case. Very impressive flexibility.

Everything is well screened from interference and sudden surprises should your phone take a call during use.

The sound? Well these things are a matter of taste, and devices this size are always a compromise. This is the area where I have always thought a much cheaper set of external computer speakers is superior to a dedicated docking device. But I have to say that the sound is pretty rich and satisfying.

There is a free app for your phone called Fidelio which increases functionality and gives you on-screen controls when docked. I liked this and the fact that it could be used to pick up radio stations too. Rather strangely it also displays weather forecasts.

Only other thing to mention is bluetooth which works quite smoothly.

Altogether an excellent speaker dock worth considering for its superior sound, neat design and flexlible functionality. But remember - you do pay for all that fuctionality, and if you don't actually need it, why pay this much?

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a reasonably sized, discrete docking speaker with a big, beautiful sound and good bluetooth connectivity. It is properly shielded against telephone interference, which lifts it far above bargain alternatives. However, the syncing with iTunes is problematic -- it only syncs when the device is turned off, and does so unreliably. You may also worry about the fragility of your iPhone, iPod or iPad while on the dock. Nonetheless, for its primary purpose, this is a beautiful device.

Main Purpose: sounding good
The main purpose of this is to sound good. The highs are crisp, the lows are quite punchy given how small it is, and there is an overall smoothness and clarity which you might associate with a Bose device.

As importantly, Philips have designed in RF shielding, so that the whole thing doesn't grunt whenever your iPhone or iPad repolls the cellphone network or takes a call. This is the real downside of the budget devices which you can get, which, despite reasonable sound, require you to put your phone into Airplane mode to have any chance of a reasonable listening experience.

The overall sound is really very loud. The device is rated at 2x 5W RMS, which, by comparison with many devices on the market today, would make you think that this is just going to tinkle along in the background. Not so! Efficient speaker design means that Philips have managed to create something that will sound LOUD in any reasonable sized living room, though not party-level deafening. The sound quality remains good all the way to the maximum.

Look and feel
The picture with this product is of an iPad with the DS3500 -- that tells you more or less how big it is. It's brown coloured on top, and silver underneath, rather like 1980s hifis.

This ipod speaker dock is a thing of beauty - both in terms of sound but also in terms of aesthetics. I love its sleek curved design and it sits neatly on my bookcase awaiting the docking of my ipod.

I only have a nano, so I can't comment on the use of anything bigger and better, but I am happy. It charges nicely, and offers an ease and simplicity of use.

Sound wise it is a clear and deep reproduction, which I find most pleasing. Everything from Mozart to Motown has sounded just great.

Highly recommended for ipod owners of all tastes and ages.

I had been keeping an eye on the top of the range Fidelio iPad compatible speaker docks for some time. What kept me from buying one? well obviously for me the price. I noticed them very slowly shedding a few quid here and there, but never to something that made me think I must have now, because I already have a decent powerful micro system (Denon M38 DAB) which is compatible with various personal music devices through various ports. But I was still tempted because I did want a speaker doc system to have in my study that is fully compatible with my iPad, as well as iPods and iPhones for friends and famIly who drop by, and the speaker doc needed to be reasonably portable to move around the place.

I came across the much less expensive 3500 series dock (reviewed here) about two weeks ago, and though I was sceptical at first because of the seemingly low power output of just 10W, I researched a bit more and decided to take the plunge as reviews were generally good and the portability ideal.

I have been very pleased with it so far. The sound is very punchy and though the deep bass range is not room filling, it is audible, and the mid range is particularly good. I tested it in the living room where the Denon system is, and in comparison the Philips does sound a bit more boxy, but a wasn't apparent until I actually played the Denon and then the Philips again. So it was a relative sound memory thing. Had I not tried the Denon side by side and immediately, then quality would have seemed reasonably high fidelity as far as the iPad dock goes.

I then installed it in it's normal home, the study/spare room, and the sound is more room filling and satisfying. The spec does say only 10w total, but it sounds more than that.
