My original five star review:

I'm not a "professional user" in any way, just someone who was quite thrilled to receive this item through the Vine programme when I'd been thinking for some time of ditching my very large stereo and CD collection and acquiring something more compact to work with my iPod. I'd have liked something by Bose, but really can't justify the money. And, talking of money, I think this little unit is quite excellent given its modest price - good enough that it's now replaced my previous system. It's an all-in-one DAB radio, CD player, and iPod/iPhone/MP3 player, that does absolutely everything I want it to.

Initial packaging? Small box, cardboard packing, wrappers around things - no complaints from me. String aerial was a bit frustrating to uncoil and I'd've liked a plug in one so I could replace it with something better (my DAB signal's a bit variable). And I was a little surprised to find no batteries with the remote control!

Very easy instructions for set up - plug into socket, connect speakers, everything else via the remote. No small child required.

For operation, I started by trying the CD deck. No problems there - unexpectedly strong and rich sound (and I'm quite fussy...), DBB (base boost) and four settings of jazz/classical/pop/rock.

Then connected my iPod (Classic in my case, but should be fine for any iPod model - there's a plug in cord for other MP3 players, but the iPod docks) which was the function I most wanted, and it's wonderful - superb sound and at long last I can experience the joy of my extensive iTunes collection.

DAB radio? Just as good as the almost-as-expensive Pure one I have in my bedroom, which cost almost as much as this unit. Simple controls, easy to do pre-sets.

I can't comment on anything comparable on the market as I haven't searched.
For a small reasonably-priced multi-purpose unit, I think this is an excellent purchase. It's perfect for my needs.

After a couple of weeks:

Need to amend my five star review a little. In situ in my lounge, the DAB radio was rather disappointing - at first I thought it might just be my DAB reception, but then I found that the least touch on the wire aerial seemed to kick everything out and I had to balance it carefully to resume. Even more annoyingly, the unit has developed an apparent fault, switching itself off very briefly every 15-20 minutes while in i-Pod mode. Now maybe I just have a faulty unit, but my review was rather more fulsome than my current feelings about it - now relegated to the spare room, and I'll be wiring back in my old unit.

CD, DAB/FM Radio and iPod Dock all work OK. Sound is reasonable but not particularly inspiring (top end a bit woolly). More flexible EQ would help. Build is OK but obviously far from sumptuous, given the �81.60 inc P&P price tag (from Amazon seller estockroom). I'm glad not to have spent more than �100 for it.

Some aspects to consider before buying:

1) The main unit, on mine at least, emits a hum that is noticeable in a quiet room. Probably the transformer. The hum decreases slightly when the CD lid is open, so vibration of the case seems to contribute.

2) The Power switch doesn't switch the power off. It's a Standby switch, and when "off" the LCD dims and the hum is still present. To avoid wasting energy, or to have the unit in a quiet environment such as a bedroom, it's necessary to switch off at the socket. A master power switch at the rear would have been welcome (being a tweaker I may end up fitting one, voiding the warranty along the way).

3) The digital volume control knob, having no physical min or max point and only being active when the unit is on, does not allow setting the volume beforehand. This presents a risk of the unit being switched on at a higher level than desired. For example, if the level has been left high and the source set to CD with no CD present and one switches to FM whilst it's set to an untuned frequency there may be an alarmingly loud burst of white noise (this happened when I accidentally pressed Source instead of Power in a room where someone was sleeping). That said, most products of this type now have digital volume controls, demonstrating that technology can't always be relied on to yield improvement.

4) Unlike some similar Philips products, there's no socket provided for an external radio antenna, just a hard-wired thin strand type.

Conclusion

Hard to find anything with the same combination of features at a comparable price. If you need CD/DAB/FM/iPod/Aux capability with separate speakers, neither need nor want houseshaking volume and can live with a low level hum, then it's well worth a go.

Arrived promptly and at a very competitive price. I'm satisfied with the product, it's straightforward to use & sounds good.
My only complaint is that it seems difficult nowadays to buy a device that will record a radio programme. (I don't want to power up a computer for iplayer). I've had to reclaim my old radio-cassette from the loft for this and it has the big advantage that the radio comes on instantly without waiting for all that logic to take effect first.
