This is a fantastic LED bulb which I whole heartedly recommend. Philips are undenieably the market leader, they and Toshiba are blazing the trail with LED technology.

Traditional light bulbs are going the way of the dinosaur and it is clear LED technology is the way forward. However, the road to LED is not quite as simple as that. Anyone who has looked at moving to LED bulbs will now that the standards of quality vary wildly from the bulk poor quality ones to the premium ones costing in excess of thirty pounds each.

The bulb itself feels very well made in hand. Once fitted I was very impressed with the result. Instant on (but not dimmable) they produce a pleasant warm light with a touch of white so they appear just a little brighter than my old halogens. It produces very little heat by comparison and as mentioned they use just a fraction of the power. This isn't as powerful as the 50w replacement I tried from their corepro range but I was more than pleased with the results and would probably consider now sticking to the 35w replacements.

Retrofitting this bulb to existing fittings is a doddle as it is all but the same size as a standard halogen GU10 which is good as some, especially the cheaper bulk ones can be slightly bulky.

Overall this is a fantastic bulb although it is worth noting that the angle of light it produces isn't as wide, the same as the 50w replacement I tried or as a standard GU10 so the resultant beam is slightly more focused. Ideal for displays or recessed ceiling lights and having said that is fine in my bathroom.

When we got a kitchen ceiling full of GU10 bulbs about three years ago they came with a promise of a potentially long life, not as long as this product but certainly many years. As we do not keep these lights on for very long on average, perhaps between half an hour and an hour a day, it came as a great disappointment that we have had to replace three of them ie a third of the bulbs since we installed them. Hence the promise of a 10,000 hours life is an extremely attractive proposition, although I do note that some other Philips Low Energy GU10s promise 25,000 hours - not sure why this should be, although the price is less than the others too. However, coupled with a 90% reduction in energy consumption, the case for changing to low energy bulbs is persuasive, particularly if you leave them on a lot as we do.

Obviously the energy saving is factual, but none of us will be in a position to judge whether the claim as to longevity is valid for many years to come. However, with a manufacturer of Phillips' standing one would assume that there is some considerable substance behind the claim. These bulbs are exactly the same fitting as a standard GU10 so there is no issue in substituting them.

I got a little confused when I got the first replacements for our bulbs as I did not understand the K rating system adequately and a couple of the initial replacements do not match the colour of the rest. The K system stands for the Kelvin scale. Normal traditional incandescent bulbs have a K rating of between 2700 and 3300 and hence this bulb at K3000 should be a good match for our existing bulbs which are a Warm White. Higher K ratings of 4000 or 5000 produce a much whiter light and are described as Cool White.

I must admit i was pretty sceptical that 2watt bulbs could provide this much light (35w) but I have been pleasantly surprised. I have full converted to LED throughout my flat, wide angle LEDs in large rooms and these in the narrow hall and small rooms. It helps having six ceiling light fittings and with a combined use of 12w they are more than adequate.

The frosted lens certainly does help to disperse the light well and these have replaced some LED lights that were more spot light type. It also helps that these are from a reputable, well known quality brand.

I'm back to order more now the price has dropped again, having bought many different types of LED over the years these are going to be the standard for me. The only places I would not use them is the kitchen and bathroom. I personally prefer the colder more clinical light for those areas. These are not exactly yellow but noticeably warmer than cool bulbs.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I'm really pleased with this product. I know it is hard to get excited about a light bulb and I found the price a little surprising at first, but actually, I've decided this offers good value in the long term.

The light produced by the LED is a really clear white light - almost a daylight light. It makes the light produced by the old halogen bulbs look really yellow and dirty. It can seem a bit clinical at first, but I adjusted quickly and now I much prefer it. I also like the fact that they don't get hot - I am constantly wanting to move the angle of the bulbs in our bathrooms and kitchen - I realise that is probably me being weird - but for me it is great that I can just touch the bulb - no need to find a tea towel. I also really like that the outside of the bulb is white - it looks really clean and neat in the bathroom and makes the white light fitting look really seamless. (We also have LEDs in the kitchen with a grey outside - much nicer than the reflective metal of the halogens)

The justification for the price is the low energy requirement for the same amount of light produced and the durability of the LED bulbs - too early to really assess the results on this - but if it is half as good as the manufacturer claims then we're saving already.
