This review is from: Philips Nivea For Men Coolskin HS8420 Rechargeable Shaver With Battery Indicator (Personal Care)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
First impressions of the Coolskin were not great to be honest, the shaver looking a bit small and fragile and quite plain compared to my old HQ7180. In use however, things picked up and the Coolskin lotion does make for an enjoyable and thorough shave though I found overuse could give me a rash. The floating heads are very flexible and move around the chin and neck nicely.
You need to have the rather small and pointless plinth to charge the shaver as the cord will not plug in directly so don't forget this if travelling. That said, the battery charge usually lasts over a week which is very good. Like most units these days, you can wash it under the tap and it's worth doing this regularly as things can get a bit messy otherwise. No sideburn trimmer is a loss too.
Overall, if you're prepared to pay the extra for the Coolskin balm then this does give a decent shave but it has it drawbacks for a shaver at this price point.
PS Be careful when topping up the balm as over-filling can result in the goo shooting out of the heads, much to the amusement of anyone watching !
PRO'S
Good shaving performance
Small and light
CON'S
Balm is quite pricey
Messy in use
No sideburn trimmer

Philips and Nivea - a combination that works, 18 July 2009
This review is from: Philips Nivea For Men Coolskin HS8420 Rechargeable Shaver With Battery Indicator (Personal Care)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
It may sound a little sad to read someone say how impressed they were with an electric shaver, but I have to say it - I was impressed with this one.
The three rotary blades do a very good job of cutting neck hairs - those stubborn hairs that seem to laugh in the face of foil shavers - and despite having quite sensitive skin, it didn't cut me and didn't leave a rash. Not just that, but it shaved quickly and without the need for repeated passes.
I tried it first without, and then with the lubricating Nivea anti-irritation conditioner provided with the shaver. Without was okay, but with is definitely better. The conditioner comes in a little bottle that has a nozzle to which you attach the shaver and pump the fluid into it. You then press a button when shaving and the shaver gently applies the conditioner to your face. I have to say, this is the way to shave. My skin was really smooth afterwards and I liked the experience. I have looked up the price of the cartridges and they're not very expensive, and the conditioner has a really nice smell to it, so I think Philips and Nivea have got themselves a repeat customer. Very pleased with this.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
I find that the new Philips shavers with their heads raised above the body all look a little bit alien, as if someone had been watching one of the Alien movies before designing them. The new Coolskin philips looks a bit like an alien too, but with its modern blue and white stripes it comes across as a bit more sporty.
Looks aside, the shaver is pretty lightweight compared to my last Philishave. This is probably to do with the limited gadgets on board. I'm used to having some sort of battery indicator and an icon or light for cleaning, but the HS8420 does away with this in favour of a smaller, cleaner design. To be honest, it doesn't really need any of these things either, you can wash it under the tap and the raised heads mean that there's less chance of dirt getting trapped.
Before using the shaver it needs to be charged for 8 hours. A small cradle holds it snugly in place while it's plugged into the mains and a small light shows the shaver is charging. Once this went out I was ready to go.
But before I started using it, one more thing needed to be done. The bottle of Nivea cream needed to be squeezed into the back of the shaver. A clear cover shows the cream going in so it's easy to know when it's full and how much is then left when you use it. The bottle seemed about half full when I finished, but I'm not sure how many shaves the cream will last for. I'm estimating at least 20 by the rate it's currently going down.
Shaving was a nice experience, twice as good with the cream, which really surprised me. I thought the cream might get in the way of cutting hairs, particularly with my stubbon stubble, but it actually seems to help rather than hinder the process.
When I shaved with my old shaver I often found some of my skin going red, but with the Nivea cream it felt smooth and the shaver didn't irritate my skin at all. It did take a while to get used to pressing the cream button every time I moved to a different part of my skin but after a while it was second nature.
After a week of using this (and cleaning the heads) I'm really pleased with this shaver and it's now become the one I use every day.
