Subtitle Shift for Widescreen Without any Missing Subtitles

Subtitle Shift is an enhancement feature that lets users manually adjust a movie's subtitle positioning on the television or computer screen. Using the remote control, users can shift the subtitles up and down on the screen. On widescreen displays, such as 21:9 cinema and projectors, the subtitles sometimes get cut off. In order to see them clearly, the user has to change the display aspect ratio, which defeats the purpose of the widescreen. With the Subtitle Shift feature, the user can retain the correct display aspect ratio and have the subtitles ideally positioned on the screen.

    Amazon Verified Purchase
This BR player is well reviewed in the November 2011 Which? magazine. Without that review I might never have considered the product.

It arrived today so I'm still playing around with it. First impressions are high and it does seem to do everything I expected (although I can't comment on 3D (don't have a 3D TV)).

I thought it worthwhile to confirm a few points about the player:

Wireless: is built-in. You select it as your network source and it wirelessly connects direct to my router (after entering the password using the remote). IP addresses are automatically assigned.

Remote: as another reviewer said you have to push the buttons quite firmly.

Internet TV: You don't *have* to register with Philips if you don't want to.

Firmware: I upgraded using the USB option. Really simple

iPlayer: my delivered firmware version was 1.16. It too had the iPlayer option on the Home screen but it did not work. The 1.35 firmware upgrade moved it into 'NetTV' where it does work.

Region: My Region 1 DVD disks play fine. Cannot test BR's from other regions as I don't have any. Note that the Amazon description "Region Two Playback Only". So, if you really want to play (say) R1 BD, you'll need to check elsewhere to see if this player can.

    Why only four stars?
    - No HDMI Cable supplied. It seems quite unreasonable for manufacturers to exclude the cable to connect to a TV. Without one the product is useless.
    - The remote. It really shouldn't need so much pressure to press the keys.
    - Only USB 2.0. USB 3.0 has been around for a while and it would have been nice to see it implemented in this player.

    Cheers,

    Excellent product 19 Sep 2011

Very easy to set up out of the box. No cable with mine though!

One immediate issue of concern - although it connects to BBCiplayer immediately you cannot actually watch a programme as an error message is displayed re cannot find server. Looking on forum I note that it is a known problem and one respondent stated they had contacted the BBC who are looking into it.

Ordered this item from Amazon on Tuesday morning 6th Dec 2011 and it was delivered mid-day Wednesday 7th Dec 2011, so well done Amazon for the excellent turn around. Out the box the unit was all in order and to expectation. It was easily connected to the TV (Sony 40" 3D LED) via HDMI and to the AV amp (Yamaha) via a digital coaxial. Tested a 2D DVD and the picture and 5.1 sound were amazing. Next plugged in a USB memory stick (4gb) and via the menu selection proceeded to play .WMA music files, the sound was equally impressive. Next plugged in another USB memory stick (4 GB) containing photos (.jpg) and was able to invoke / play a slideshow, once again impressive images. Finally, plugged in a Verbatim 1tb external USB HDD, which had been formatted using Windows 7 to the NTFS file system and contained home movies (.divx files) created out of Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack and then converted to .divx by Divx Plus Converter. Again screen display was very impressive. Overall the unit appears solid and well constructed, but I can see why other reviewers have indicated their disappointment with the "soft feel" of the remote control buttons. Never-the-less it adequately performs the job. Will follow up with Part 2 of the review once I have set-up Wi-Fi, used NetTV and Blu ray etc.

Have now completed part 2 of set-up and encountered only 1 problem when setting-up wi-fi, accessing NetTV and playing a Blu-ray disc and more DVD discs. The problem as expected is with the remote keypad, in so far that 1 of the keys (i.e. additional options during playback) only works 2 out of 20 attempts. I contacted Amazon UK and they are willing to replace the whole purchase or allow a 15% discount to allow me to purchase an alternative R/C. However according to Philips UK and their associate spares company (Dutchwest)only the R/C model RC-2802 at a cost of £27.99 + £3.99 delivery, will work with the BDP5200/05 player.I will now explore alternatives before considering returning the whole thing back to Amazon UK. Pity as everything else, except the remote control is brilliant about this player so overall would give it 4 stars.

Excellent picture and sound, which is the main thing surely?! Only issue is the web tv interface which could be a little easier to use. In terms of value for money, superb.
