Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Get the most out of your HD TV with full HD 1080p Blu-ray Disc playback and BD-Live online bonus content. Be ready for Wi-Fi and enjoy your PC videos via DLNA. Experience enhanced DivX HD video playback with Certified DivX Plus HD.

Subtitle Shift for widescreen without any missing subtitles

Subtitle Shift is an enhancement feature that lets users manually adjust a movie's subtitle positioning on the television or computer screen. Using the remote control, users can shift the subtitles up and down on the screen. On widescreen displays, such as 21:9 cinema and projectors, the subtitles sometimes get cut off. In order to see them clearly, the user has to change the display aspect ratio, which defeats the purpose of the widescreen. With the Subtitle Shift feature, the user can retain the correct display aspect ratio and have the subtitles ideally positioned on the screen.

DivX Ultra Certified for enhanced playback of DivX videos

With DivX support, you can enjoy DivX encoded videos in the comfort of your living room. The DivX media format is an MPEG4-based video compression technology that enables you to save large files such as movies, trailers and music videos on media, e.g. CD-R/RW and DVD recordable discs. DivX Ultra merges DivX playback with great features including integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recomended, 2 May 2011
This review is from: Philips BDP5100/05 Blu-Ray Player (1080p,HDMI,24fps,Dolby TrueHD 7.1,Profile 2.0) (Electronics)
This unit has everything i was looking for USB ports the ability to play all formats and its so easy to use,i have found it to be very quiet and is up and running fairly fast from turn on.You do have to open an on screen options menu to access zoom play speed angles chapters ect and would have prefared buttons on the remote but as i dont use these options very often its not a problem.
Blue-Ray discs and upscale of DVDs are a visual pleasure and you can hook up to your PC or seperate hard drive/storage and access all content via on screen menu which is very easy to navigate.I have pluged an internet cable in to access BD live but in general dont use it,i believe you can also get a wireless dongle to plug in too.

Very pleased with this unit and i highly recomend it.

    4.0 out of 5 stars BDP5100, 23 Jun 2011
This review is from: Philips BDP5100/05 Blu-Ray Player (1080p,HDMI,24fps,Dolby TrueHD 7.1,Profile 2.0) (Electronics)
very good value for money Bluray player, happy with USB in front (used to link laptop to TV via VGA video and RCA for audio) and even more convenient is the Wifi connection to access music and movies from laptop. However, the machine is 'Wifi ready', which means the dongle WUB1110/00 is an accessory, I head to fork out an extra £40 for this feature. A little bit disappointed that when playing a movie from laptop I don't seem to have the possibility to fast forward or rewind. Pushing stop means having to start the movie from the beginning. (if I am overlooking this please correct me)
Other than that really pleased and this machine makes no noise at all other then a very quiet buzz at start up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings, 10 Feb 2012
    By
HLT (Wales, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Philips BDP5100/05 Blu-Ray Player (1080p,HDMI,24fps,Dolby TrueHD 7.1,Profile 2.0) (Electronics)
I find this to be excellent as a budget Blu Ray player for the older Blu Ray's I've tried, however not so good for DVDs and potentially problematic with newer Blu Rays, depending on what features they use.

Blu Ray doesn't seem to be nailed down as an implemented format, which is perhaps not Philips's fault -- but in general I find it appalling that a consumer media format is so imprecisely specified/implemented, with every Blu Ray seemingly having a disclaimer that if it doesn't play, your player needs a firmware update! Extras and format-flexibility are nice to have, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the core function, which is to play the main feature film.

Again, I would stress that this is an issue with the format, rather than necessarily with this player, but still, it does leave you at the mercy of the manufacturer and their commercially-driven decisions about how well/how long to support a particular player.

Anyway, my two main gripes with the actual player are:

    - contrary to another review, I'm not happy with the DVD upscaling. The player can't seem to make up its mind what do with fine detail from second to second, resulting in local variations in graininess that come and go within a single scene. For example, watching the DVD of the final Harry Potter film, Hermione's hair as she leaves her parents' house was in constant flux between grainy and smooth. The rest of the scene was okay, it was just the fine detail of the hair that seemed to cause a problem. I didn't bother watching the rest of the DVD as I thought we'd be able to watch the Blu Ray; the exercise was about assessing the upscaling quality, and the player failed. Fortunately, we have other ways of watching DVDs, so I didn't bother checking other movies -- it seems highly unlikely, but I suppose it's conceivable there was something about this particular disk.

    - having turned to the Blu Ray of the same film, we found that the player kept skipping frames every few minutes, leading to a horrible jarring feeling every time it happened, and leaving you constantly wondering when it would happen again, instead of getting into the movie. Digging around on the internet revealed that this is due to how extra features are linked into the film at particular points. Anyway, I've reported this problem to Philips, and they do seem to be aware of the issue with other players in their line-up, so we can hope they will produce a firmware update.

For now, my advice would be to check out the Philips support forums to see what the latest firmware version is (it's version 1.57 as I write this) before relying on this player for newer Blu Rays, and to look for more information and reviews on its upscaling ability if you have a large DVD collection you'll want to use with it.
