Watch YouTube Videos Directly on Your Big Screen TV*

Get YouTube videos on your TV now. Enjoy the huge collection of online videos on a larger screen, without even having to turn on your computer. Simply ensure that your Blu-ray player, or home cinema system, is connected to the Internet, either wirelessly or by cables—then sit back and enjoy the best of YouTube.

DVD Video Upscaling to 1080p via HDMI for Near-HD Images

HDMI 1080p upscaling delivers images that are crystal clear. DVD movies in standard definition can now be enjoyed in high definition resolution - ensuring more details and more true-to-life pictures. Progressive Scan (represented by "p" in "1080p') eliminates the line structure prevalent on TV screens, again ensuring relentlessly sharp images. To top it off, HDMI makes a direct digital connection that can carry uncompressed digital HD video as well as digital multi-channel audio, without conversions to analogue - delivering perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise.

DivX Plus HD Certified for High-definition DivX Playback

DivX Plus HD offers the latest in DivX technology to let you enjoy HD videos and movies from the Internet direct to your Philips HDTV or PC. DivX Plus HD supports the playback of DivX Plus content (H.264 HD video with high-quality AAC audio in an MKV file container) while also supporting previous versions of DivX video up to 1080p. DivX Plus HD for true HD digital video.

1080p at 24 fps for Cinema-like Images

Bring a true cinema experience into your living room, with 24 frames-per-second video. Original films are all recorded at this frame rate, providing an ambience and image texture that is so unique. Philips Blu-ray Disc players are equipped to bring you 24fps directly from Blu-ray Discs — giving you sensational cinema-like high definition images that will astound you.

Subtitle Shift for Widescreen Without any Missing Subtitles

Subtitle Shift is an enhancement feature that lets users manually adjust a movie's subtitle positioning on the television or computer screen. Using the remote control, users can shift the subtitles up and down on the screen. On widescreen displays, such as 21:9 cinema and projectors, the subtitles sometimes get cut off. In order to see them clearly, the user has to change the display aspect ratio, which defeats the purpose of the widescreen. With the Subtitle Shift feature, the user can retain the correct display aspect ratio and have the subtitles ideally positioned on the screen.

Pros
The video and audio quality on this machine are excellent, with every DVD or Bluray disk tried so far.
The USB connection works well, and the player accepts all sorts of video encodings without issue.
Setting the player to multi-region for DVD is by a simply code on the remote control.
Doesn't run hot and is quiet when playing.
Has coaxial SPDIF out to my older Home Cinema amp.

Cons
The YouTube feature is almost totally useless. The text entry is incredibly slow, taking around 1-2 seconds for the keypress to register, by which time you have probably pressed the key twice and have to spend 10 seconds scrolling line for line down to the delete button then back up to the text entry. Phillips have also made a huge mistake in starting playing the most popular YouTube video immediately and they have no control over what this video is. In my case, trying the YouTube feature for the first time, it was some teenage kid being interviewed about his toilet habits, complete with video of him sitting groaning on the toilet. Phillips would have been better off creating their own portal. The easiest way to use the YouTube feature is to look up a video on a PC then enter the user name of the poster. The quality is surprisingly good once the video starts playing.
The interface is so slow that it is generally quicker to find the video via a PC then download it to a USB stick and watch it that way.

The software is still quite buggy. The player has hung completely 3-4 times in as many weeks, requiring the power to be unplugged to reset. This happens for instance when trying to open the drive try before the player has finished booting. Or when pressing the Home button too soon after inserting a USB stick. I now give the machine a few seconds to think before performing my next action. Production quality software should be more robust.

Summary
The core features work very well if you can live with the software issues. Most of the other players in this price range have noise or heat problems, so the Phillips is a reasonable choice if you can live with the software imperfections. With any luck, they will release a software update to fix some of these issues.

good value player 24 Jun 2011
By D. Pugh
I bought this player for my daughters bedroom to hook up to a 19 " tv,out of the box the player seems quite well built & I could not resist hooking it up to my samsung 40 inch Led tv in the front room just to compare it to the sony player I have in there.
the blu ray picture is quite good indeed ,not the most detailed but quite sharp with good motion & bright colours ,audio is good via the hdmi, the dvd upscaling is not as good as the sony player & while there is nothing wrong with the picture it is a little flat & lifeless with all the dvd's I tried, the usb playback function is very good ,plugged in my 250 gig harddrive & it plays everything on it including the mkv files.

now on plugging the player into my daughter tv dvd's look much nicer on a smaller screen, having had this player now for about 2 months it seems quite good indeed for a basic entry level player,it does what it needs to do without fuss, not a player for the video enthusiasts but as a starter or a second room player it represents good value for £79 & one other thing this player is silent during all playback unlike my sony which can be a little noisey with some blu ray discs.

I give it 4 stars as it only loses one for the dvd upscaling which if better would make this a killer player, but non the less a great product.

By ROROBLU'S MUM TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Philips are renowned for making things simple and easy to use - their slogan is 'sense and simplicity' - they got that spot on!

Setup took approximately 2 mins; I connected it using a standard HDMI cable. That, together with a power cable is all that was needed. There is another option for connecting the player to the TV, with an AV and video cable. However, please note, that these cables (HDMI cable as well) are NOT included in the box - you need to buy these yourselves!

The player requires no real setup in terms of settings, however, a simple press the Home button on the remote allows you to access audio, video and various other settings. The remote itself could do with a little more clarity as there are no real labels, which may be confusing for the elderly. Having said that, the 'give' on the buttons is firm, so one press is sufficient.

Additionally, the player can use a standard ethernet cable or USB dongle to connect to the Internet, in particular YouTube; however, it works perfectly fine without having to use this function. There is a USB port on the front, which allows for films stored on a memory stick to be played.

It is very well-priced for a DVD/Blu-Ray combi, and the video quality is very very good. On top, it is barely 1.5 inches in height, so takes up very little space. An excellent buy.
