Subtitle Shift

Subtitle Shift is an enhancement feature that lets users manually adjust a movie's subtitle positioning on the television or computer screen. Using the remote control, users can shift the subtitles up and down on the screen. On widescreen displays, such as 21:9 cinema and projectors, the subtitles sometimes get cut off. In order to see them clearly, the user has to change the display aspect ratio, which defeats the purpose of the widescreen. With the Subtitle Shift feature, the user can retain the correct display aspect ratio and have the subtitles ideally positioned on the screen. Blu-ray Disc playback

Blu-ray Discs have the capacity to carry high definition data, along with pictures in the 1920 x 1080 resolution that defines full high definition images. Great budget player 6 Jan 2011
By N. Butt
This is the third Bluray that I have either bought or had access to. The first impressions are good, the player is slim, light but feels sturdy and the mechanics of the drawer etc are smooth. Whilst there are few reviews online about the quality of the pictures or audio, this player certainly delivers on both counts. There are a number of notable positives that are worthy of note. This player is very quick to load a Bluray disc, and anybody who has sat watching their own players for minutes wondering if the disc is loading, if the player has jammed etc will know what I mean. Also, Philips really are good at making their on screen menus absolutely foolproof. There are only a small number of clear icons, and so setting it up is a 5 minute simple process. Check around, there are some real steals on this player and it cannot be faulted for the price.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Phillips used to be the brand of choice for many people in the 1970s but it seems to have been overtaken in popularity by the other big names - well, this DVD player puts it back at the top for me. I am not very patient or knowledgable with technical stuff but connecting this to my TV/Sky setup took less than one minute using an HDMl jack. The Blu Ray player itself is smaller and lighter than my old one so cuts down on the size of the 'clutter' below the TV. The start-up is simplicity itself (I already had an HDMI but the player does not come with one but neither did the last one I had); the opening screen has three options which are easy to navigate via the handset - press play and up pops the most clear and crisp picture I have seen outside a cinema. I would like to add that the instructions in the user manual are good, the illustrations are simple and the sections on connecting, getting started, playing and various settings don't bamboozle with technical jargon. This clever player has a host of interactive options which I am not going to list because you can see them next to the product here on Amazon and also, apart from the photo and music play I will be using it mostly for playing DVDs.

Now for the very best bits - apart from an excellent quality of picture, the sound quality is very, very important in my household. If you live with someone who is hard of hearing, the 888 choice on TV or subtitles option on a DVD is a really good facility but not all screenings have subtitles at the bottom, often the words are placed in the most inconvenient part of the screen, obscuring a bit of the action or a vital part of the plot. This player gives you the option of moving the subtitles which is brilliant. Another best bit - on the audio setup (again, it's easy to navigate) there is an option for Night Mode. When you want to have the volume low, this raises the soft sound levels such as the dialogue and it decreases the loud sounds like accompanying music, gunfire , etc. This is an absolute gem when the TV is below the bedroom and someone wants to sleep and someone else wants to watch the millionth re-run of Rambo or Bourne!

I cannot find fault with this Blu Ray player from Phillips, even the price is very good and I wish it had been available a year ago when I bought my previous, more expensive and top-of-the-range one because I do think this one is better. One last bit, at first I thought the player was not responding to the handset but it just required a firmer press than I was used to with my other one.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a very good piece of equipment, which is what I would expect from Phillips.
It is easy to set up, and is easy to get working with just two connections - the mains plug and the HDMI cable.
It appeared straight away on my screen, and the index is nice and easy to follow. There are 3 sections in the index panel - taking you to the Disc, the settings or the USB port.
The Disc menu has all the usual functions - playback, subtitles, fast forward and reverse, etc.
The USB menu allows you to plug in a USB device (a memory stick for example) and look at the contents on the TV screen. It will show photographs, play audio and show .WMV videos.
The settings allow you to adjust the basic settings.
It plays standard DVDs as well as Blu_Ray DVDs, and the sound and image quality are very good indeed.
The only gripe I have with this is the remote.
It is a really cheap looking (and feeling) bit of kit, with a very unpleasant sharp edge all the way round.
It works well enough, but compared to the remote that came with my Phillips HDMI TV (which is a very slick and smart piece of gear) it is naff.
