Philips Avance HR1871 Whole Fruit Juicer with XXL Tube, 800 Watt

Video review showing the juicer plus cleaning. Great gadget and one I will use regularly, it replaces my old Philips juicer that we used to destruction.

This juicer offers the highest level of juice extraction I have ever come across, whether from a stand-alone juicer, the citrus attachment for my Kenwood Chef or a manual press. There is very little juice that escapes and therefore very little waste.

* Assembly

The juicer comes in a very large box, which will be too big for most kitchens to accommodate for storage. The juicer does, however have a relatively small footprint on a work surface and also looks good, so mine is staying out ready for action.

I found it very easy to put the juicer together without needing to refer constantly to the instructions as everything assembled in a very logical fashion. Taking it apart subsequently for cleaning is also a doddle.

* Method

You need to do some preparation of the fruit before starting to juice. Remove anything from the fruit that you wouldn't normally eat - so peel oranges and pineapples, remove the stones from apricots and so on; apples on the other hand are just popped in whole.

The insertion tube will take apples and oranges in one piece but pineapples need to be cut down in size to fit, as does any other large fruit. Whilst fruit preparation is not high on my list of must-do jobs, it is worth taking the time to do this properly to avoid any bitterness creeping into the taste of the resultant juice. Once peeled and cut as necessary, the fruit is just inserted into the tube and pushed down slowly.

You get a choice of two different juicing speeds; the slower one works best on soft fruit like oranges and the faster one on harder produce like apples. I flit between the two speeds for pineapples depending on how much of the core is present in each piece. The juice is collected into the supplied jug or you can place a glass directly under the spout if preferred. Simple.

* Noise

There is no getting away from the fact that extracting juice from fruit is a noisy business. It seems slightly noisier than other juicers I have used in the past but not disproportionately so; except I do have to ensure the cats are not in the kitchen when it is in operation as they do not like it.

* Results

As I said at the start, this juicer really does produce more juice from each fruit than I have ever experienced previously. The pulp container contained only a dry mass when I juiced oranges and apples; there was literally no juice visible in there at all. The waste from pineapples is slightly wetter but comparably dry to what I have seen before. There is also less foam generated from the process, so the juice is much clearer as well.

* Mess

There isn't any!

The spout from the juicer incorporates an inner lip that cuts off the flow of juice when the spout is twisted. This helps to ensure nothing drips onto your work surface or down the front of the machine when the jug/glass is removed.

All of the waste from the fruit is collected into a pulp collector that sits under the sieve; this is easily emptied into your normal food waste once juicing is completed. The pulp container is part of the main juicer assembly and easily has the capacity to collect the pulp from a dozen oranges or a couple of pineapples before it needs to be emptied.

* Cleaning

Philips have really made sure that cleaning is not off putting, everything can just be rinsed under the tap before being dried and reassembled. All removable parts can be placed in a dishwasher but I really don't find that necessary as it is so easy to wash by hand, even the sieve comes up like new using a plastic washing up brush under the tap.

* Summary

It is an efficient juicer that really does seem to maximise the amount of juice than is extracted from each piece of fruit. It is easy to clean so there is nothing to put you off from using it on a daily basis to produce really fresh juice - and that juice tastes so much better than anything you can buy in a shop.

Used exactly in accordance with instructions on average twice per week for 3 months. The motor burnt out after 3 months of use and there is no guarantee or option to return. A very expensive mistake.
