Product Description

Philips AVENT
You'll be able to carry the Philips AVENT SCD600 with you wherever you go in your home.

See and hear baby with the SCD600 DECT Baby Monitor

Philips AVENT understands that caring for your baby's health and safety is one of the most important things you do. The AVENT range of products helps you relax knowing that all is safe and well with your little one whilst they are sleeping in another room. Whether you want to hear every tiny gurgle via the crystal clear DECT technology monitoring range or see every movement day and night, Philips AVENT offers effective solutions to support you.

Digital Technology

The Philips AVENT digital technology enables you to maintain a secure connection with your baby at all times. As well as perfect sound quality, you can now also see your baby in crystal clear vision, whether night or day. With a range of 150 meters, the AVENT video monitors are fully portable and easy to use, making seeing your baby from anywhere in your home fast and easy.

Philips AVENT
The clear, high-resolution digital screen on the Philips AVENT SCD600 allows you to keep an eye on baby.

Your Baby and Light

Light levels are important to your baby's comfort and development. That's why the Philips AVENT SCD600 comes equipped with a remote-operated night light, that you can activate without being in the room providing a calming distraction, allowing you to freely move around the room without disturbing baby's sleep patterns.

After 9 months in your womb becoming accustomed to light takes time for a baby's incredibly sensitive eyes. As your baby's eyes start adjusting to light, a natural reaction is to close them if it is too bright. At the same time, small lights that gently stimulate the delicate optical nerves of baby's eyes will help them develop.

As your baby learns to tolerate stronger light, you can help them to differentiate between night and day. When your baby is sleeping, try keeping the room dimly lit to associate bedtime with night time. A baby's sleep is much lighter than an adult's and they may wake as often as 5 times a night. Having a night light will be a great comfort to you both, your baby will enjoy looking at any shapes made by a light, providing a calming distraction and helping them resettle and sleep more peacefully.

A night light also means you don't have to switch on a main light, causing a disturbance to you both, while enabling you to see around their room.

Your Baby and Crying

Crying is the only way your baby has to communicate is he/she is hungry, wet, tired, too warm, too cold or a little scared. Through a monitor, it can at first be difficult to distinguish a cry of hunger from a cry of restlessness--the Philips AVENT SCD600 baby monitor comes with crystal clear DECT sound to make it easier for you to learn what your baby is trying to tell you. You could try to start to understand the differences in your baby's communication:

  • If they are making an 'owh, owh' sound, it could be that they are sleepy and a little grouchy, as this cry is based on a natural yawning reflex.
  • A sound more like a 'neh, neh', is a cry that's based on the sucking reflex, so it's likely that your baby is hungry and would like feeding.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
For a baby monitor that resembles Marvin the Paranoid Android (from the 2005 film The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy), I was very surprised with how well the baby monitor performed! Set-up was incredibly easy, as there were only two main components: the camera and the monitor. The camera itself resembles a webcam (albeit it a large one). The camera attaches to its base via a magnet, which allows for the camera position to be altered to any desired angle, whilst still being stable and secure. The monitor uses a rechargable battery, and again is very easy and simple to put in. This also runs off of a cable to the mains. Both cables are about three metres in length, meaning that plug sockets being too far away is not an issue.

We put very little work going into setting up the monitor; simply turn on both devices and they connect to each other automatically. We tested the monitor in both light and dark conditions, and it provided for excellent quality video on the monitor, especially considering that the monitor is small enough to be easily held in your hand! It also has a small stand on the back of the monitor.

We were especially impressed with the infrared camera, as the 'night-vision' provided us with excellent quality video. The sound is also crisp and clear. It worked perfectly from a distance of around 15-20m (upstairs, along a corridor and down a small flight of stairs). If in the unlikely instance that your camera and monitor become disconnected, the monitor produces a buzz/bleep, certainly loud enough for you to take notice. Furthermore, the monitor gives you a clear indication of signal strength and battery levels.

All in all, an excellent piece of kit: highly recommended, despite looking like a depressed robot. However, at £[], it seems a bit over-priced; I would be happy to pay between £100-£125, but who can put a price on your child's safety?

Great baby monitor 25 Jan 2012
    By PTloewi
If you want to have a good eye over your baby/ child, this is a great baby monitor to get. Easy to set up and use. Some people complain about bad reception when you have a wireless network at home - I do have a wireless router at home and everyhting works fine, even at longer distances with doors closed it is great.

Although it costs a little, it is very good.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
There's a lovely space-age feel and look to this system.

The camera is a large eye-ball that sits in a special magnetised holder so that it can be adjusted to (virtually) any position although a standard tripod mount is incorporated for a wall-mounted bracket.

When the light level drops, a cluster of infra-red LEDs switch on to illuminate the area of the camera's fixed focus interest.

The unit can also run some small white LEDs that provide a kind of night-light effect. Although white light seems so harsh against the standard warm, reassuring glow of a low wattage incandescent night-light bulb.

The monitor has a solid and chunky feel to it and incorporates a swivelling belt-clip / kick stand so that the monitor unit is equally happy on your waistbelt or sitting near you on a flat surface.

Both units work off batteries but mains transformers are included. The monitor uses something akin to a mobile phone style battery as it is more likely to be on the move than static.

Range is pretty good although the manufacturers claim of 150 metres (~450 feet) does seem exaggerated. In practise I started to lose the signal around the 35 metre mark (~100 feet). Regardless of the manufacturer's claim, would you want to be running the 150m dash to get back to your beloved baby?

The monitor features several additional features. There's a volume control and a brightness control. You get six levels of brightness so you can set it to a level that suits your environment, a little bit darker if you are watching TV in a darkened room. Lowering the brightness also extends the battery life.

There's a screen sleep function that will switch off the screen - saving more battery power - but the screen switches on again automatically as soon as baby makes a noise so you miss nothing. Setting the unit just to the side of your line of sight means that you can watch TV undisturbed but when the screen comes on, your peripheral vision will be drawn to it immediately.

The monitor unit is also capable of enabling three twinkly lullabies at the camera unit. This is supposed to calm baby while you make your way to their bedside. I tried but I could not find a microphone on the monitor for two-way communication. I felt that the soothing tones of a parent's voice might help to settle the little one more effectively.

It looks great and the nice clean lines make it look expensive and chic.

While it is primarily used for monitoring, I felt that an SD card might have added to its value by recording video. It's not the same as your regular offspring archival video recording but in the split second that you are not looking at the screen, it would be a good idea to know exactly what junior put in their mouth.

But don't feel that it is restricted solely to babies. Parents may also benefit from this as a way to keep an eye on your toddler or small child while allowing them some degree of independence when playing, especially with friends.

Elderly or infirm relatives living with you may also feel secure knowing that you are on hand if they call out, while not feeling that they are tying you down to their every need.

The only downside to this device is the very hefty price tag. It's a very nice system, but perhaps you should put it in your wish list and hope a rich relative buys it as a gift for your new arrival.
