Product Description

Philips AVENT
You'll be able to carry the Philips AVENT SCD535 with you wherever you go in your home.

Stay close to your baby with the SCD535 DECT Baby Monitor

Philips AVENT understands that caring for your baby's health and safety is one of the most important things you do. The AVENT range of products helps you relax knowing that all is safe and well with your little one whilst they are sleeping in another room. Whether you want to hear every tiny gurgle via the crystal clear DECT technology monitoring range or see every movement day and night, Philips AVENT offers effective solutions to support you.

DECT Technology

The Philips AVENT advanced digital technology (DECT) in each product enables you to maintain a secure connection with your baby at all times. As well as crystal clear sound, these monitors guarantee no interference or interruption from any other product over a range of up to 330 meters.

Your Baby and Crying

Crying is the only way your baby has to communicate is he/she is hungry, wet, tired, too warm, too cold or a little scared. Through a monitor, it can at first be difficult to distinguish a cry of hunger from a cry of restlessness--the Philips AVENT SCD535 baby monitor comes with crystal clear DECT sound to make it easier for you to learn what your baby is trying to tell you. You could try to start to understand the differences in your baby's communication:

  • If they are making an 'owh, owh' sound, it could be that they are sleepy and a little grouchy, as this cry is based on a natural yawning reflex.
  • A sound more like a 'neh, neh', is a cry that's based on the sucking reflex, so it's likely that your baby is hungry and would like feeding.

Your Baby and Light

Light levels are important to your baby's comfort and development. That's why the Philips AVENT SCD535 comes equipped with a remote-operated night light, that you can activate without being in the room providing a calming distraction, allowing you to freely move around the room without disturbing baby's sleep patterns.

After 9 months in your womb becoming accustomed to light takes time for a baby's incredibly sensitive eyes. As your baby's eyes start adjusting to light, a natural reaction is to close them if it is too bright. At the same time, small lights that gently stimulate the delicate optical nerves of baby's eyes will help them develop.

Philips AVENT
The gentle night light on the Philips AVENT SCD535 soothes baby and helps undisturbed sleep.

As your baby learns to tolerate stronger light, you can help them to differentiate between night and day. When your baby is sleeping, try keeping the room dimly lit to associate bedtime with night time. A baby's sleep is much lighter than an adult's and they may wake as often as 5 times a night. Having a night light will be a great comfort to you both, your baby will enjoy looking at any shapes made by a light, providing a calming distraction and helping them resettle and sleep more peacefully.

A night light also means you don't have to switch on a main light, causing a disturbance to you both, while enabling you to see around their room.

Your Baby and Temperature

Coming from the controlled environment of your womb where your baby's body temperature was regulated by you, it takes several months for your baby's body to learn to properly control its own temperature. As your baby's body starts to develop, keeping a close eye on the environmental temperature will help you know if they are uncomfortable. Studies have shown the ideal temperature for a baby's room is between 16 to 20C, by keeping the room at an optimal temperature, you can help your baby to be calm and restful.

To ensure the room is within this range it can help to use the electronic thermometer in the Philips SCD535 Baby Monitor, which can send precise readings to wherever you are in the house. Giving you the freedom to monitor a room's temperature remotely, without disruption; this means if baby is too hot or too cold, simply pop back into the room and adjust the blankets or the heating system in your home.

Your Baby and Humidity

The humidity level of an environment plays a vital role in overall wellbeing. To give your baby's immune system the best start, it will help to monitor the humidity level of their immediate environment with the Philips SCD535 Baby Monitor.

Healthy humidity levels for a baby's room are between 40 to 60 per cent. At these levels the moisture prevents the mucus membranes of your baby's nose and throat from becoming too dry, which can make them less effective barriers against infection. A newborn baby's soft skin is ten times thinner than an adult, and is much more delicate. Increasing the amount of moisture in the air acts to prevent skin from becoming dry and itchy.

A controlled level of humidity will help your baby rest; if the room is too dry and you don't have a humidifier, a simple but effective way to increase the level is to put a bowl of water in the room, ideally near a central heat source. If the room has too much moisture, you could buy a dehumidifier and closely monitor the levels for the first few days in order to ensure the climate is just right for your baby.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect baby monitor 30 Nov 2010
By Chris Hoare TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Philips baby monitor is the second monitor we have. We already have a Bt digital baby monitor plus and the two have not interfered with each other. The sound quality of the Philips is much clearer than my Bt one.

It has a stylish design and a small parent unit so it will fit easily into your pocket. The baby monitor has a range of 330 m! Our house is not this big but we live in a three storey building and it worked perfectly across all floors. The sound quality is excellent with very little background noise.

If I compare the monitor to my other one, the Philips one has:

Excellent sound quality and is very clear
It plays nice music to soothe the baby
It has a handy talk to baby mode and nightlight feature
It has a very useful humidity display on the parental unit (especially if you are in an older house)
It has a useful alarm function if the temperature goes above or below the limits which you can set.
It comes with a compact travel bag making it easy to take away with you.
Display is clear and easy to read.

    Negatives:
You have to learn where the buttons are on the baby unit especially at night time as they are not illuminated in any way. So for example, when the child wakes in the night it can be bit of a guessing game pressing the right button on the baby unit in the dark to play a song. You can't take the parental unit into the same room as the baby unit as they interfere with each other and make a very loud screeching noise which would definitely wake the baby!

The music is good but it only plays for c. 2mins. It would be useful if it played for longer or you had the option to extend the playing time. I find myself staying awake at night to play the music again!

I know the unit had an alarm if the temperature goes out of the range limits but it would be nice if you could set the parental unit to illuminate so if in the night you want to check the temperature you can easily see what it is. Unfortunately it does not have this as an option!

All in all though a good monitor which I would recommend.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 2 Dec 2010
By Coincidence Vs Fate TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
We ordered this unit as the old Avent set we'd had since our son was born four years ago had finally given up the ghost.

The unit was dead easy to set-up and I didn't really need to look at the instruction booklet. The first thing I noticed was how small everything is nowadays with the more modern monitors. The "parent" unit is dead tiny, smaller than your average mobile phone. The display is very clear and displays the temperature and the humidity level.

The "baby" unit is a small square box which again was very easy to set up and displays the same information; humidity and temperature.

The only downside is the night light, it's just not very bright, just a dull orange glow. The best thing though is the quality of the signal. Those who have had baby monitors in the past will realise what a pain they can be, trying to get a signal, screeching, etc. Nothing like that with the Philips.

    Well made and great quality.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Best monitor we've had 13 Dec 2010
    By Supertzar TOP 1000 REVIEWER
    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is our fourth monitor, having previously owned older Philips and Boots models. It's easily the best for the following reasons:

    - excellent, hard-wearing, yet lightweight construction

    - huge range - others struggled to get from the top to the bottom of the house

    - crystal clear monitoring - which was spooky at first as we realised just how much noise our youngest made settling herself to sleep

    - the 'speak to baby' option is also clear and the right volume - we used to frighten the living daylights out of the baby using this feature on the Boots monitor

    - the light display and music features are good - easy to use and nice tunes - although maybe the music could last longer

    - the humidity and temperature features are great - extra comfort for nervous parents!

Wish they'd made a product this good when we had our first child - thoroughly recommended.
