1.0 out of 5 stars Awful Product Experience, 30 Jan 2009
By D. Butcher (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this item as a christmas present for my folks. After setting up the device (which is relatively straight forward if not a little slow) I explored all of the features. One of the most appealing features is the option to choose how frequently a photos is displayed. Unfortunately none of these settings would work. No matter which setting I went to the photo's kept revolving every 3 seconds - Very annoying.

I sent the product back through amazon and got a replacement very quickly. Unfortunately this feature did not work on the second unit either. Furthermore after trying to set this feature on the replacement unit and failing, I turned the machine off. An hour later, I decided to try again. Unfortunately the unit never worked again. I'm not sure if i was just unfortunate enough to get a couple of products from a bad batch or this is why this product is so cheap. After this experience I really don't think I'll buy another Philips Product online until I've had the chance to really test it out in a store.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mac Users Beware!, 26 Aug 2009
I bought this item because of generally positive reviews regarding both quality and ease of use. However, from the first moment it was switched on, I ran into the same problem described by D. Butcher elsewhere in these reviews - namely that the slideshow would refresh every 3 seconds or so regardless of the time selected in the controls.

I sent the first frame back but the replacement had exactly the same problem. At that point, I decided to do some digging, and discovered that the slideshow settings would work properly with cards containing only shots straight out of my digital cameras (Nikon D50/SD and Fuji E900/XD), but wouldn't work if I loaded files from my Mac (regardless of whether the card had been formatted in the Mac or a camera). The frame won't connect to my MacBook Pro (running OS 10.5.8) either - when connected via USB, any card plugged into the frame would show up in the Finder, but on attempting to open it the Finder would hang, then the card would vanish from the Finder and a "this device was not properly ejected" alert would appear.

Connecting to my girlfriend's work PC was much more successful - the frame works fine as a card reader, albeit a bit slowly, and in Windows you can also fix the slideshow problem. It turns out Macs deposit some sort of invisible file along with any file they copy to an external device - it's not visible in the Mac Finder, but in Windows you can see an extra file with the same name, prefixed with an underscore (so if you've loaded a file called "ABC.jpg" onto a card using a Mac, there'll also be a file called "_ABC.jpg" which is visible in Windows).

Delete all those underscore-prefixed files and the slideshow settings will work properly.

Luckily we've bought this frame for my girlfriend's mother, who owns a PC, but given that we're an all-Mac houselhold, if we'd bought it for ourselves, it would be going back as incompatible.

PS - the bundled software is Windows-only and even firmware updates come as .exe files - inaccessible to Mac users.

5.0 out of 5 stars philips digital frame, 15 Mar 2009
By Mrs. R. L. Cleary (Leeds, west yorkshire) - See all my reviews

GOOD LOOKING FRAME GORGEOUS GLOSSY WHITE.GIVES CRISP, CLEAR PICTURES. EASY TO OPERATE. REQUIRES HARDLY ANY SET UP. THE DOWNSIDE IS THE POWER LEAD WHICH COULD DO WITH BEING A BIT LONGER. THE ONLY PLACE IT CAN BE DISPLAYED WOULD BE VERY CLOSE TO A SOCKET. OTHERWISE A GOOD BUY. ALTHOUGH IF BUYERS COULD STRETCH A BIT FURTHER A LARGER SCREEN IS BETTER AND WOULD BE WORTH THE EXTRA EXPENSE.
