My studies have little relevance to reviewing, but one quote I'll always remember is that to look into future, we must refer to the past. Trust Philips then to give the candle a makeover!
I should make it clear at this point that you're getting what you pay for; a product that not only feels like a toy, but is valued in such a way too. These are certainly not bad aspects though - in fact as I see it, they're qualities as there shouldn't need to be anything sophisticated for a light that mimics a real flame. With flicker, too!
The 'candles' are essentially opaque plastic pots that look like a drinking glasses, and have no buttons or switches. In fact, charging is done through base-station via a conductive surface at the bottoms of the devices, therefore simplifying the design and making them more rugged. Just give them the usual 24 hours in their station as a first-time charge, and they're good to light for extended periods.
Looking inside these candle tubes, all you're going to see is the flame-shaped bulb. Switching these fellas On and Off is simply a case of tilting the candles upside down. Quite a brilliant idea as it feels so natural and requires no thought. Whats more, it gives the candles something of a multi-purpose around the home. In my case, I keep at least one candle beside my bed, so if I need to go on a loo-run, just pick up the candle and give it a shake! It's fit to light my room, too.
The opaque design is soft and, as such, I dare say very romantic. If you just dim the house lights and plant these candles around the house, you'll create a wonderfully sensual atmosphere without the danger (usually from us men) of burning down the house.
In short, I can only see benefits to using these over traditional candles. OK, so they may not come in hundreds of fragrances, but at least you can just charge it up and re-us it hundreds of times over. They're safer, cool to touch, and really (seriously) handy for using around the house. Whats not to like?
