Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
LCD WXGA+ display 1440 x 900p
This WXGA+ display with state-of-the-art LCD screen technology gives you widescreen HD resolution of 1440 x 900p pixels. It produces brilliant flicker-free progressive scan pictures with optimum brightness and superb colours. This vibrant and sharp image will provide you with an enhanced viewing experience.

Integrated Digital DVB-T tuner
The integrated DVB-T tuner lets you receive Digital Terrestrial TV to watch or record. This means you do not need an additional set top box and also the additional cables.

HD Ready
Enjoy the exceptional picture quality of a true High Definition TV signal and be fully prepared for HD sources like HDTV broadcast, Blu-ray DVD or HDVD. HD ready is a protected label that offers picture quality beyond that of progressive scan. It conforms to strict standards laid out by EICTA to offer a HD screen that displays the benefits of resolution and picture quality of a High Definition TV signal. It has a universal connection for both analogue and uncompressed Digital connection of DVI or HDMI, supporting HDCP. It can display 720p, and 1080i signals at 50 and 60Hz.

3D Combfilter
The 3D comb filter separates brightness and colour signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-colour, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion - all of which detract from your viewing pleasure. The 3D digital comb filter performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the colour from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl. The result is a razor sharp image.

Incredible Surround™
Incredible Surround is an audio technology from Philips that dramatically magnifies the sound field to immerse you in the audio. Using state-of-the-art electronic phase shifting, Incredible Surround mixes sounds from left and right in such a way that it expands the virtual distance between the two speakers. This wider spread greatly enhances the stereo effect and creates a more natural sound dimension. Incredible Surround allows you to experience total surround with greater depth and width of sound, without the use of additional speakers.

Compact and slim design
This design style emphasises a slim, compact look that saves space and fits in anywhere.

Dual HDMI input
HDMI makes an uncompressed digital RGB connection from the source to the screen. By eliminating conversion to an analogue signal, it delivers an unblemished image. The non-degraded signal reduces flicker and leads to a clearer picture. HDMI intelligently communicates the highest output resolution with the source device. The HDMI input is fully backward compatible with DVI sources but includes digital audio. HDMI uses HDCP copy protection. With 2 HDMI inputs you can connect multiple HD sources, for instance an HD set top box, and a Blu-ray player. Your TV is fully prepared for the HD future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good picture and audio, well worth the money., 9 Dec 2007
I have had this TV for about a month now and really can't fault it in terms of picture and audio quality. In fact there is very little to criticise.

The unit itself is quite stylish, with a black glossy surround to the screen. The speakers are incorporated into a perforated panel long the bottom, but this blends in well and isn't really noticeable. For the best effect, mount the TV on the supplied stand, as this has a very classy (and heavy) glass base and provides the complete package.

Setting up is a simple affair, with the now standard auto tune and with it having a built-in Freeview tuner you will get the appropriate digital channels. I certainly found that this set picked up more channels than the previous one I had, so the tuner seems to be more `sensitive' than some. There are some default picture and audio settings, so at the press of a button on the remote you can quickly find one that suits you. If not, then there are numerous adjustments that can be made and saved as a `personal' default. There is also and option for the set to detect 4:3 or 16:9 display and switch automatically, or you can manually do this. The remote itself is bit lightweight but the layout of the buttons is fairly logical and easy to use. Some of the more obscure functions have symbols that aren't immediately obvious as to what they do, but a quick read through the manual will fill in the blanks.

In use the picture quality is very good and as long as you feed it a quality signal you won't have to worry about any blockiness. Colour and brightness are well controlled and generally the picture never gets to that washed out effect some sets display. The audio is very good for such a small TV and remains distortion free beyond a normal listening level. There is an option to have a `surround sound' effect but in use I found this not very effective.

The only criticism I have is that the menu structure can be confusing and is not that intuitive. If you have owned Philips products before in the A/V area then you are most probably familiar with this type of thing, as Philips have never been that good at designing easy to use menus. In the EPG for example you can page down through the channels but if you want to get back to BBC1 (in position 1) you can't do this in a single button press. For most of the basic stuff it is fine, and maybe I have been spoilt with having Sky+ and its EPG, but it is a minor annoyance at times.

It's worth four and a half stars, but as it has to be a whole number then four it has to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is mine faulty or is it a bug?, 14 Nov 2007
I bought this TV 3 months ago and I am generally pleased with it. Picture is very good from a distance (it is a bit noisy close up - that could be my signal strength tho). Sound is very good and clear.
I have it in the bedroom quite high up compared to the bed. I had to buy a wall bracket to tilt the TV down a bit as the picture would appear too dark when you look at it from below (the viewing angle is set so that it's OK to look at the TV from the top but not from below).
I've found 3 bugs on the set:
1- The EPG doesn't update correctly. On the Now and Next page, sometimes BBC1 will show a program for 8.00 to 8.30 whilst ITV1 will show a program for 6.00 to 6.30 (ie. the Now time is completely different between channels).
2- I have a DVD player connected to Ext4. When I first turn the TV on, if it is on Ext4 and I switch it back to DVB Tuner the screen becomes blue and the OSD displays 'Digital TV' but no sound or picture appears. I have to turn the TV off at the switch to fix the problem. This has happened 3 times in over 2 months use.
3- Sometimes when I switch channels on DVB, the sound goes away. I have to change channel again for the sound to come back.

Philips tells me that the set is faulty and that I need to send it back to Amazon who will forward it them. It seems to me that a firmware update could fix these. Has anyone had the same problems?

///// UPDATE \\\\\
I returned mine in the end because I couldn't get Philips to fix the problems. Thanks to Amazon's fantastic customer service.
I found a few more bugs. When you turn the Teletext on it changes the picture settings to Multimedia and if the Teletext crashes (which it often does) then the picture settings are not restored. Also, when I connect a DivX player to the AV sockets on the side I get alternate dark and bright horizontal lines every cm across the screen. Finally, some settings disappear randomly (eg, Inc Surround reverts to Stereo).
I now have a Sony KDL20S3020 and everything is working smoothly. Although it's 20" instead of 19" it doesn't look bigger because the bezel is a lot slimmer. Also, don't be fooled by the higher resolution of the Philips, the picture on the Sony is actually better
So save yourself the bother and buy a Sony.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good picture but tiny On Screen Display, 5 Nov 2007
I have recently bought one of these, and on the whole I am very pleased with it. I decided to buy it in preference to the Samsung equivalent, because it has a mor powerful amplifier and my partner has poor hearing. Both the picture and sound quality are very good.

My only complaint is about the size of the OSD controls. I use this TV in my bedroom, where I am about 4m away from the screen. At that distance many of the controls are unreadable, and I have to move closer to the screen to make them out.

One of the frustrations of buying a TV, even in a store, is that they cannot demonstrate the Freeview functions like the IPG, or even the Freeview picture quality.

You may want to compare the OSD on different TVs with this one if you are going to be using it from more than 6 feet away.
