Format:Audio CD
This piece is not characteristic of Glass' usual minimalist style. I think it has more in common with Bethoven's seventh symphony than Steve Riech's Different Trains. It is more classical in style, in that it sustains (dare I say) a powerfull melodic structure. The piece builds to a shattering pitch and I would defy anyone not to be shaken and stirred from the experience. The Philip Glass Violin Concerto is, quite simply, a work of profound beauty and importance.
I cannot understand, however, why Deutchen Gramaphone deemed fit to marry this piece with Schnittce. They do not appear to be particularly well matched. Perhaps someone can enlighten me. I would say, however that this C.D. would be an invaluable addition to anyone's collection.

The Glass is very predictable (though has some peaceful moments), has he really moved on since Glassworks?
Whatever your taste (I know I'm in the minority :)), Gidon Kremer's playing will
get your attention and transport you to a better place, enjoy!
Also check out Schnittke's Concerto Grosso No.1 played by Kremer, essential listening.

Format:Audio CD
Having only heard snippets of the Glass Violin Concerto on the radio, I took the plunge with this CD. It is well worth it! The complete 3 parts are all different and build up to a climax. As an intro into 'modern' classical, I'm a convert and will be listening for other Glass works. I have to agree though that the other works appearing on the CD (not by Glass), let the side down. Still, worth buying for the Glass Violin Concerto alone.

Bought it for the Glass, which lived up to expectations. Didn't enjoy the Schnittke - not that obvious a pairing
