Following on from the current Top 40 album Philadelphia International: The Re-Edits and the amazing response to Philadelphia International Classics: The Tom Moulton Remixes it gives us great pleasure to introduce Philadelphia International: The 40th Anniversary Box Set the most complete and comprehensive study of the Philadelphia International catalogue to date.
We invited world acknowledged Philadelphia International expert Ralph Tee to return to compile his second Box Set for the label following his previous ground-breaking 14 x vinyl LP box set in 1986 (over 25 years ago) which still
regularly sells for £100+ on e-bay and throughout collectors circles.
This time Ralph has the added benefit of a further 25 years of experience studying the Philadelphia International operation and a lot more time to play with almost 800
minutes or over 12 1/2 hours of pure quality music from one of the greatest labels of all time.
Also included within the package will be a 60 page full-size booklet containing full sleeve notes and track details from Ralph Tee (Ralph is also author of the definitive Who s Who In Soul Music ) which will also include a number of archive photos and key album scans.
We are also proud to include within the booklet for the first time ever, a fully comprehensive complete discography of all U.S. Philadelphia International and related labels compiled by Philadelphia International expert David Grimes
(aka Phillydave ).
An absolute must for all Philly collectors and especially Philadelphia International archivists as there

There are already excellent reviews for this boxset at Amazon at the time of writing. Due to confusion over which version of a single was used a reviewer gave the set one star which does not represent my own enjoyment and appreciation of the set.
The sound quality is excellent, the selections go beyond the obvious and it is clear that care has been taken to get this right. A fair proportion of the tracks are unavailable on CD until now and others such as those by Bunny Sigler sound far better than early CD releases.
I have listened carefully on good quality headphones and the sound is clean with good detail and separation but avoids the clinical harshness, compression or over amplified volume of some modern CD releases. A good balance then for warm music made prior to the digital era.
I recommend this set greatly and frankly almost anything on Philadelphia International Records. We may not see the like of this CD set for much longer so I and others will treasure this music. It sets a standard and I wonder if the same could be done for Salsoul and Prelude.
Most of all it allows a deep and extended enjoyment of this positive, heart lifting music. They made it this way because they wanted to hear it themselves and this dedication shows.
Many thanks for all the great work, I'm off to enjoy a beer in the sun with the perfect soundtrack.

Is it so long ago since I first heard Backstabbers or Me and Mrs Jones? Back then the world was different and quite often the records we got were different across the continents too so I did wonder what versions this most important 40th anniversary cd set was going to contain. Harmless and their compiler, Ralph Tee, have clearly decided to give us the US versions with a mix of some hard to find on cd single edits and 12" mixes. So be it. To complain about this is really to do do a disservice to their aim of giving us an authentic flavour of this most iconic soul label's output which in terms of its track selection is unbeatable for it covers every genre over the widest period of its operation.
Contrary to a certain persons review this cd set is not sloppily mastered, original masters were obtained by Harmless and freshly remastered. Having played this on two dedicated hifi systems, it sounds simply superb something that doesn't necessarily happen on the 'big' labels.
Had Sony of issued such a set I am sure people would of paying around £70 or so for just over £41 you lucky people get over 170 classic songs and performances in the most comprehensive selection yet.
Strongly recommended even if you have a stash of Sony legacy, Westside and Edsel seperate artists cds on your shelf.
