CD Description

* Ace's producer-based series continues with a bumper 28-track collection devoted to the most famous record producer there ever was, the one and only Phil Spector. The set focuses on the legendary eccentric's early work, with all titles drawn from the 1958 to early 1963 timeframe.

* Half of the selections are making their CD debut. These include `Nights Of Mexico' by Russell Byrd (the recording alias of songwriter-producer Bert Berns), two titles by Bobby Sheen (soon to reach the Top 10 under Spector's guidance as the lead vocalist of Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans) and both sides of an ultra rare 45 by Terry Day (aka Terry Melcher, the son of Doris Day). More familiar hits by the Paris Sisters, Curtis Lee and Gene Pitney are also featured.

* The set contains the first record Spector ever made, `Don't You Worry My Little Pet' by his own group the Teddy Bears, taped in '58 at the fabled Gold Star studio in Los Angeles, the scene of many of his future triumphs. Soon realising the spotlight wasn't for him, Spector then set about building himself a career as a producer. Before long he had inveigled his way into Leiber & Stoller's inner circle at Atlantic Records in New York, where late in 1961 he launched his own label, Philles. But that's another story. Meanwhile, this is where it all began for the would-be genius...

If Phil Spector was a copycat so was Pablo Picasso - the 'genius' comes from using, reinterpreting and then creating something new and very different (Phil Spector was a genius not a copycat). Now that's of my chest, go and buy this wonderful mix of early productions. From start to finish the quality of the music on this cd never drops below very good. Like most 'Ace' cd's the booklet is great and packed with info and label scans. Music wise the well known tracks sound great - 'Spanish Harlem', 'Under the moon of love', 'Pretty little angel eyes' and 'Every breath I Take'. Some of my favourites would be 'I'm so happy'- the Ducanes and 'That's alright baby' - Kel Osborne and 'I love you Betty' - Terry Day both the latter showing early signs of the 'wall of sound'. I would recommend this cd to anyone who likes fine music.

Anyone interested in Phil Spectors production work, gets a good deal of Spectors musical upbringing in the profession right here. His ways aren't fully clear, Spector's still searching for his own mark, which you see carefully strolling by in various titles, like Talk to me by Jean DuShon, and in others, like Gene Pitneys extraordinary Every breath I take, which on the other hand is Spector in full bloom, but before The Crystals and The Ronettes (Pitneys tone is a forgotten masterpiece!).
Maybe not for everyman, but absolutely for anyone bent enough to understand he/she is a nerd who won't split until we're down in the basement...

While it would have been better in chronological order-to show how Spector copied other peoples' ideas-this is how it started from a song by the Aquatones called YOU.
The first white doowoppers to use a soprano voiced girl as lead singer.Spector listened and came up with the Teddy Bears.Once they'd run their course he next created his own version of the Fleetwoods as the Spectors 3.
During the next couple of years he stole most of Leiber & Stollers' ideas and the Wall of Sound concept from Frank Guida who'd done the Gary U S Bonds singles.
The Chantels also got a look in with the first ever Crystals single.
This was his main talent-copying.And being in a position to dictate to others his demands. Such as insisting on a third credit on songs written by Brill Building writers.
But it doesn't bother me-I love copycats and would say it takes as much talent to copy as it does to be original.
As for the "worlds' greatest producer" anyone could do what Spector did and many like the aforementioned Frank Guida and in England Joe Meek did it before him
