5.0 out of 5 stars Phil Harding a true talent! 23 April 2012
By Jan

Love this cd release! I must the biggest (pleasant) suprise was the 10" version of I'm not scared! It's amazing and cannot understand why this wasn't chosen as the official 12" version in 1988! The 12" of the Blow Monkeys and Four Tops are another two which i am very happy to have in such awesome sound quality! Thank you mr. Phil Harding, hoping there will be more of the same coming from you, maybe some obscure Hazell Dean mixes in the vault somewhere? ;-)

The sound quality of this x2 album is just amazing! It's been remastered in 24Bit! The 2CD Set comes with a x16 page glossy booklet, with loads of background information; technical remixing details and colour photos of each release.

Technically this is a great collection and Phil Harding and the Cherry Pop team score 10/10 for producing this.

Musically - although most of these track were remixed at PWL, they sound hollow and lack the 'magic, glitter & stars' of pure Stock Aitken & Waterman productions.
They are not Stock Aitken Waterman quality productions, and sound mostly like misses than hits (underground club hits at best)

It's an interesting vintage collection. Sonically near perfect.

Production wise, if the "Phil Harding" mix of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" were released as back in 1987, it would NOT have been a hit. The 'magic, glitter & stars' of a pure Stock Aitken & Waterman production is 100% missing.

Stock Aitken & Waterman some how created a world of musical extasy in their records. They made perfect pop records!

This review is for: Phil Harding Club Mixes of the 80s
I'm a huge PWL fan, so this release was something that made me very excited. I bought Phil Harding's book: PWL From the Factory Floor which is absolutely amazing with its in-depth account of what it was like to work at PWL and his involvement. I would highly recommend the book. However, I feel the CD could have been better. The thing that struck me most was that for most of the tracks I kept thinking of other mixes I preferred over the one on the CD. I was excited to see Agents Aren't Aeroplanes "The Upstroke" for the first time on CD, but this mix doesn't even include the song, it is mostly instrumental. Pepsi & Shirlie's "Heartache" is far superior in the original Pete Hammond 12" version and Blow Monkeys "Digging Your Scene" is better in the original Michael Baker 12" version with hot edits from The Latin Rascals. Sinitta's "Body Shopping" is better in 2 versions on Sinitta's The Hits + Collection 86-09; Pete Hammond's Hi-NRG mix is the best short version and Phil Harding's 12" mix is the best long version. Comparing, it is easy to see why this "New Vogue Version" was not released at the time. The remix of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" is less than impressive, far better in all the other mixes released and the unreleased Rick Astley tracks just sound like demo recordings, which was a bit of a letdown. So, a lot of this looks better on paper than what actually comes out of the speakers.

With a CV resembling a 'Who's Who' of the music industry, the career of remixer/producer PHIL HARDING spans over 30 years - from recording The Clash and Elton John in the 70s, to remixing and producing top club/dance/pop acts in the 80s/90s, to recently working with Lamont Dozier in L.A.

In the 80s, working out of a basement studio in the Pete Waterman-owned PWL studio complex (with production partner Ian Curnow), Phil Harding club mixes and productions dominated the dancefloors and club charts on an international scale. On this long-awaited, remastered double-CD package are 25 sought-after classic 80s remixes and rarities - including 10 US Dance Chart hits (4 reaching No 1) and UK club and singles chart successes too numerous to mention (and many first-time-on-CD). A must-have release for 80s club, dance and pop devotees alike, it features...

- Motown stars... DIANA ROSS, THE FOUR TOPS, MICHAEL JACKSON WITH THE JACKSON 5, JIMMY RUFFIN (best known for 'What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted')

- Hit 80s artists... ABC, HOLLY JOHNSON, EIGHTH WONDER & THE PET SHOP BOYS, IMAGINATION, BASIA (MATT BIANCO), BLOW MONKEYS, FIVE STAR, GODLEY & CREME, RICK ASTLEY and DEAD OR ALIVE

- Previously unreleased tracks and mixes... JIMMY RUFFIN stunning unreleased production, RICK ASTLEY (2 unreleased mixes including the original 'Never Gonna Give You Up' Club Mix + 2 unreleased Harding/Curnow productions) and a planned SINITTA 1990 re-launch with a Madonna 'Vogue'-style club sound.

- Comprehensive colour booklet... packed with new research, Phil Harding mix commentary and interviews on an unprecedented scale (equivalent to an extra 5 chapters-worth if included in the Phil Harding book)...

5.0 out of 5 stars Top quality remastering from original studio tapes & packed booklet 29 Nov 2011
By JP - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Top quality remastering from original studio tapes with a booklet packed with detailed sleeve notes including new research, Phil Harding mix commentary and interviews ... In addition to an in-depth brand new interview with Phil Harding and Ian Curnow together on 'the making of' these tracks (and beyond), there are interviews with 10 other artists/industry personnel involved with these tracks back-in-the-day.

The CD is a tie-in release with Harding's recent 600-page book 'PWL From The Factory Floor', the inside story of PWL Studios in London, UK, who had a vast array of hits for other artists such as KYLIE MINOGUE, PET SHOP BOYS, DONNA SUMMER, BANANARAMA, ERASURE, GARY MOORE, CHIC and MEL & KIM - as well as working with unknown industry newcomer SIMON COWELL.

The book explains what went on behind-the-scenes at the 24/7 studio and has sections on working with well-known artists, in-depth interviews, commentaries on classic mixes and a technical section with something for everyone - including how to mix a Number 1 hit and revealing some of the techniques and wizardry of working in the record industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!! 30 Jan 2012

This is AWESOME!! :) I've been looking for some of these tracks FOREVER, and could either not find them or only get them on vinyl! The sound quailty is great and the track selections are fantastic! A great slice of 80's dance music - plus some rare Rick Astley unreleased tracks as a bonus! Now when will we be getting a second compilation or something from other PWL remixers?? By the way, I know there is a companion book to this, but the liner notes are realy fasinating!... even though you need a magnifying glass to read them! Could the font be any smaller?!...

5.0 out of 5 stars The master of SAW mixes gets his own compilation 28 Dec 2011
By Daniel W. Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Phil Harding is most often linked to remixes of dozens of Stock Aitken Waterman productions. A few of those productions are here, but a large number of these mixes are strictly focused on the fact that Phil Harding remixed them, so they are not all SAW productions. That also means not all of them have that Hi-NRG sound--some are actually downtempo. What you do get is plenty of 12" mixes that have never been on CD before. Therefore, there's a glaring inclusion of the murder mix of Dead or Alive -it has been on DOZENS of compilations. But, it is indeed one of Harding's shining moments, so it really had to be featured here.
Really though, the other rarities are the reason to get this disc. New versions of classics by Diana Ross, The Jackson 5, and the Four Tops are big highlights, as are the numerous unreleased Rick Astley tracks. Harding's mix of the hugely popular Never Gonna Give You Up is something I was thrilled about, but actually, it's not all that impressive a mix--I expected it to have a harder sound, but it's actually softer than the hit mixes. The other unreleased astley songs are fun, but they all sound mostly like demos--both the musical arrangement and Astley's voice. If you ARE looking for that SAW sound and hi-nrg tracks, there are plenty of them on disc 2, my favorites being Oxygen, I Need More (the vocals sound like a cross between Pete Burns and Divine), and The Upstroke.
